Jean-Michel Basquiat

For me the two most important artists of the 1980s was Prince and painter Jean-Michel Basquiat. A few years after his death many were introduced to the man and his art through the film Basquiat. Last year the film was remixed and a black & white version made. It was released from Criterion Collection. Recently I revisted the man and the movie in "4 The So-Called Avant-Garde: The Life and Afterlife of Jean-Michel Basquiat." https://crimereads.com/ba...-gonzales/

I used to have the colorized movie on DVD... Why was a black abd white version released?

When the director was at a film fest something was wrong with the projector and the film was shown in b&w; he liked it and decided to do a version for the DVD reissue.

Basquiat and Prince truly defined the spirit of the '80s, both broke boundaries in their own mediums, and that Criterion black & white cut adds a whole new layer to Basquiat’s legacy.
