"Lady Sings The Blues" or "Mahogany"

This is in regards to pivotal performances by Diana Ross. Is it true or no that a musical artist can venture out to "movie star" status? Many have tried and failed (Britney and Mariah, to name a few) but some have actually made a mark (Ice Cube, Whitney, DMX smile )

But what about Diana? Like her or not, she may have been a pioneer to many. Taking these two films into consideration,
which MADE Diana a "movie star"?

Mahogany...this was an original story and she was completely into her own element, not playing another singer...I LOVE that movie smile

Lady Sings the Blues, no contest. Great story, great music, great performances. Diana put it down in that one...

Also, DMX & Whitney have a way to go before they "make a mark" in the acting field. Yes, they've been in some movies & Whitney is producing here & there which is great. But they're unskilled - he grunts through performances, she's far from believable... they have a way to go.

Cube is cool but limited. Will Smith does what he does, lol. Mos Def is great, he already has the background too. I was looking forward to seeing what Aaliyah could have become on screen sad Queen Latifah has reached another level (which I was reminded of watching Set It Off the other night) & has the best record of 'em all - go on girl wit'cha Oscar nom biggrin

Ha that was my high school graduation theme song. I remember having to give a speech to that theme; and all the English teachers were perplexed what to do with the title ("Do You Know Where You're Going To?) since it ended with a preposition (and you NEVER end a sentence with a preposition lol)

Co-Sign! That song stays on my mind after each time I watch Mahogany.

Mahogany says or rather screams to Brian: "Brian, don't you know who I am?" smile

I like that movie too but I really think she did a great and better job in the movie "Lady Sings The Blues" The Movie Mahogany had me cracking up in certain parts, that car scene that took Anthony Perkins out (yes although his character died the scene itself was very funny) and that crazy looking rainbow dress thing her character designed. Some of the other sharper outfits were very nice.

Whoever hasn't seen them yet can get a copy of both movies online and/or see some reviews following this link:

Mahogony is the shit..especially when she falls in the water and they use that as th enew billboard with the music blasting..and when Billy Deebreaks it down and tells her trippin ass "listyen..success is NOTHING without someone you love to share it with"

then when she says to the count she wants to go home..not to th evilla though...home

and she tells Billy she wants hee ol man back.

Lady of course is the classic but Mahogony is fun.

Lady Sings the Blues because there you can truly respect the stylist that is Diana Ross.how many People that are in the Business take on projects that aren't often associated with them? that was a Gutsy Call on Berry Gordy's part&Diana Ross Pulled it off.I dug "Mahogany" but I felt it was Diana Ross Being Diana Ross.but Lady Sings the Blues She was So on Point for me I was Moved.i can hear other people doing Lady Day's Music but I can't see any one else playing that Role like Diana did.IMHO She should have Won a Oscar for that Role.
