And now the surprises:

1st place (in the round robins) Japan is eliminated by 4th place Netherlands in their first loss of the comp. Japan had won every game up to this - no draws and with the biggest total goal difference.

2nd place Sweden is eliminated by 7th place Spain in their first loss of the comp, also in their first loss.

In the Round of 16 there were no real surprises: The 8 teams that did the best in the round robins are the 8 teams that have made it to the Semi Finals - Japan, Sweden, England, Netherlands, France, Australia, Spain and Colombia.

Based on performance so far it looks like the final 4 will be (in order) Japan, Netherlands, France and England. However, Football is fickle and often the best team does not win on the day.

And that says what?

Nothing except football is fickle. It was just running commentary part way through the comp.

The team with the better history or the one that shows it is outplaying the other team based on the stats during the match can still lose because scoring a goal is so hard. Take the USA loss to Sweden: USA was the top ranked team entering the comp, They had won more Woman's World Cups, made 12 shots at goal compared to Sweden's 1, had 58% of possession, 9 corner kicks to Sweden's 3, fewer fouls but more offsides. It all looked like USA would be and was the better team on the day but USA drew the match and lost on penalties.

Whilst there was no surprises in who the 8 teams that got to play off for the Semis based on performance in the Round Robin, only 1 of the top 4 teams by the end of the Round of 16 actually made it to the Semis. Japan, Netherland and France's failure is Sweden, Australia and Spain's success. Only England's match reflected their previous performance up to that point in the comp.

I am perfectly happy with that result because Australia only did 6th best in Round Robin and was 7th by the end of the round of 16 but we made it to the Semis.

True. We did really well and it's something to build on for the future.

The problem for me is that I live in Ireland and we get a lot of British TV over here and if England win I'll never hear the bloody end of it lol

Congratulations to Spain. Overall, a very good tournament which I hope will raise the profile of the women's game all over the world for years to come.

I caught that lol . Why was she saying that lol . Apparently she was off her line when the kick was taken so technically the Spanish player should have been allowed to retake it but I suppose it didn't matter in the end.

Australia has a disgusting history...invaded by Europeans in 1788 to establish a penal colony for the degenerates who were no longer welcome in Europe..and those barbaric and diabolical people, subsequently murdered hundreds of thousands (if not more) of the darker complexioned indigenous natives of that country...hopefully Austrailia gets destroyed and eliminated from World Cup play...just like "America" did.

All countries have a disgusting history. But I'd take a country with a disgusting history over a country with a disgusting present any day of the week wink

Not ALL countries...mainly the European and so called "American" and "anglo-saxon" countries have the barbaric and diabolical history of enslaving, invading, pillaging, warmongering, stealing, and murderously "colonizing" countries that were already inhabited.
