Women's World Cup 2023

I know there aren't a lot of football (or soccer, if you prefer) fans on the org and probably even less fans of womens sports but this year the Womens World Cup is taking on an extra significance for me, being that it's taking place in Australia.

My allegiances are being tested though because while I do consider myself to be Australian, having lived there from age 1 to 21, for the past 11 years or so I've been living in the country of my birth, Ireland. Both my parents are Irish too and my mum is going all out, decorating the house back home in green and hanging a big Irish flag outside much to the chagrin of our Aussie neighbours. My dad doesn't care either way because "wonens sport isn't sport" lol

So I don't really know who to be cheering on. I guess I'm hoping both Ireland and Australia do well. But, as luck would have it, both nation's first game of the tournament is against each other. If I didn't know any better I'd swear FIFA did that in purpose just to spite me lol .

But anyway, will any of you be watching the World Cup this year?

I will be watching for Australia.

The exciting thing about it is that, without the billions and billions spent over decades, countries outside of Europe and South America have a real chance. It seems to me that with the Men's World Cup, so much of the rest of the world is just excited to be in the 32 or to make it to the final 16. In the meantime, England, the big Euro and South American countries get so easily depressed if their team does not make it to the various levels.

Are you going to any of the games? I'm so jealous, my mum and dad are going to the Australia/Ireland game. Fully kitted out in their Ireland jerseys. I hope they don't get mobbed lol

Unfortunately I cannot - I will just be enjoying being able to watch it live at reasonable hour.

Well we won but I'm kind of sad Ireland didn't get the draw. But I'll take it.

Also, here's something random. I was signing for a package today at work and the delivery guy heard my accent, asked if I always Australian and when I told him I was he called me a cunt because Ireland lost. So that was nice lol

Despite the stats it was not an easy win, especially with the captain, Sam Kerr out.

I hope you parents enjoyed themselves - It was a cold winter's night for Sydney.

Yeah they had a great time. They were telling me that a huge group of both Ireland and Australia fans all went out together and had a drink or ten. Seems like a really nice atmosphere over there. I've had my fair share of complaints about the Irish people over here but it's like anywhere, there's good and bad wherever you go. And in fairness, the travelling Irish soccer fans always have a great reputation when it comes to supporting their team at World Cups, Euro Championships etc.

I kind of feel like that about most sport to be honest. Baseball in particular has to be the worst of them. But I like to get invested in big international tournaments. The football, the rugby, even the cricket. I wouldn't watch a regular club game but I like watching the internationals. There's just something exciting about it.

Ouch, by the way, regarding women's sports lol . I get that most of them aren't as hard hitting as the men's equivalent but surely you can take some enjoyment out of the tactical side, if not the physical?

When i do watch womens' sports (softball, gymnastics and basketball), im mainly watching to see who looks good and whose body looks good in their uniforms, and i root for them...im not very concerned with their tactical or competitive exploits cool

If Australia beats Canada we go through to the Round of 16.

If Australia and Canada draw, then we only go through if Nigeria loses to Ireland and then it depends on goal differences and tie-break rules.

If Australia is beaten by Canada, we are out.

Hopefully Ireland can do it against Nigeria to give us a better chance of going through. Either way a win puts us through anyway so hopefully we can get it done. It won't be easy though.

Poor Canada and New Zealand - First time the current Olympic champions or a host nation has been eliminated in the round robin.

4-0 with Sam Kerr ultimately not needed on the field!

Yeah.

They should've kept Morgan in...

Musovic is a fantastic goalie, she didn't let any of those strong shots in!!!

Either way, it's fucked up that the U.S. got eliminated by 1 fucking cente-fucking-meter lol

Ahhh, the frustration of Football (Soccer). It was both less than and more than that:

- Less because the goalie let the ball wholly over the goal line plus 1 millimetre.

- More because in the round robin stage Sweden was the 2nd best team in the comp by winning all their matches with an 8 goal difference. Sweden scored 9 goals to beat Italy, Argentina and South Africa. The USA was the 11th best team by only scoring once in 2 drawn games after beating Vietnam by 3.

In the Round of 16 there were no real surprises: The 8 teams that did the best in the round robins are the 8 teams that have made it to the Semi Finals - Japan, Sweden, England, Netherlands, France, Australia, Spain and Colombia.

Based on performance so far it looks like the final 4 will be (in order) Japan, Netherlands, France and England. However, Football is fickle and often the best team does not win on the day.
