i love filesharing.i went from Napster to Audiogalaxy to Kazaalite and sometimes use Direct connect (which is great for Prince boots).I'll never stop.

Burn baby burn is my philosophy! lol

I do support new music and buy CD's by artists i like, most of my stuff is boots or unofficial stuff.

...if you think record companies are terrible, vote with your wallet and just boycott their products...

I know some recording artists here (Netherlands), they ALL say 85% of their income is by performing, 15% of CD sales.
In that respect ppl downloading ARE boycotting the record comps.

Continuing album sales and associated royalties are kind of like a pension plan or something... the more you sell, the more money you have coming in. If a band cannot tour for one reason or another, they will make no money if they don't sell any albums.

You may look at the other way around:
And if a band doesn't sell any albums (possibly due to downloading) they still can tour.

Oops!

I've downloaded stuff but only stuff I'm gonna buy anyway and can't wait to hear. My lack of patience when it comes to new music drives me mad. I'm usually prepared to wait for anything.

Soz!

Then they can have the honor of touring until they die with no royalties coming in from album sales.

biggrin

Yeah, I download music. Only out of print or stuff that you could only get by buying a compilation CD. I refuse to buy compilation CD's. It's the biggest ripoff in the world.

But honestly, the whole argument about the ethics of downloading music is tired and pointless. Like Chuck D said, 'trying to stop P2P file sharing is like trying to stop the rain'. The discussion that needs to take place is how the music industry is going to deal with '21st century technology that undermines their inefficient and outmoded 20th century distribution models'.

That dialogue has to be about how to trump the products that are Grokster, Morpheus and Kazaa.

I was so with you until I learned how to do it. I typically just grab stuff that I've already bought and just scratched or lost, never was released on CD, etc. For example I downloaded some songs from The Family a couple of weeks ago. I already own the LP and I couldn't track down a decent CD copy if i wanted to. When it comes to Prince, I really only end up getting the bootlegged stuff, which primarily hits the bootleggers in the pocket.
