Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness

This review has been copied from the Superhero thread and pasted here for those who want to discuss Dr Strange without derailing the general "superhero" theme of that thread.

Dr Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness - Mini Review

No Spoilers. Yet.

Ok, so I'm just home now after seeing the movie on the big screen so it's still a bit too fresh in my mind to decide how it ranks amongst the rest of the MCU but I will say this; it's a really fucking good movie. I kind of half expected it to be full of cameos just for the sake of it and it's not. It's not that kind of movie at all. I will avoid including any spoilers here for those of you who want to go in with as little knowledge of the plot as possible so if, like me, you've managed to avoid any spoilers before seeing the movie, I think you'll enjoy it even more.

Ok, first things first, I said it's not one of those "here's a cameo, there's a cameo" type movies and it's not. But that's not to say there aren't any cool cameos. In fact, there are quite a few. Just less than I was expecting. And if you've managed to avoid knowing who these cameos are, I strongly advise you to stay off Twitter until you see it because once the movie opens, people WILL be talking about these cameos. One in particular that I never saw coming. You've been warned!

The movie itself is pretty standard MCU stuff for the most part. There's a few nice little Sam Raimi touches along the way but it's certainly not the dramatic departure that some of the trailers are suggesting. What sets it apart from the majority of the MCU is the performances. Some of the acting here is really top notch. Elizabeth Olsen is especially good. Like, Oscars-good. I doubt she'll actually be nominated but I guarantee you that her performance here is better than most, if not all, of last year's best actress nominations. Saying any more may give away some important plot details so all I'll say is her range in this movie is incredible. And I never rated her as an actress before today.

Some of the CGI looked a bit weird to me though. That's my only real complaint. I wasn't wearing my glasses so I'm not sure if that had any impact on my viewing experience but sometimes it looked a bit... cheap? It also didn't help that before the movie they showed the new trailer for Avatar 2. And that looks fucking amazing, by the way.

Overall, I really liked Dr Strange 2. Some of it was just crazy (in a good way) and I can't believe some of the choices Marvel made here regarding some of the things [REDACTED] does (also in a good way). It was different enough that I liked it but for those of you expecting some massive departure from the Marvel formula, you'll be disappointed

No spoliers here.
If you seen the trailer you have an idea what to expect

I saw it the Thursday night. About 60 people in the theater. It wasnt packed like Spiderman was.

I thought the movie flowed really good. Start with action, slow down for a few, then bam! More action. The movie kind of follows that pace. I never got bored. I say that because the latest Spiderman movie it was long and boring at times lol

I've heard Sam Raimi is know for horror movies? All I know is his evil dead movies, and I dont think they were great. Anywho the movie does have horror elements. It's dark, ominous. It might be a little scary for young children. My coworkers daughter who is 6 loves Spiderman movies. This is probably not for her.

I enjoyed story. The trailer doesn't spoil that, perhaps its misleading? because it didnt really go the way I expected, and I mean that in a good way.
I'm glad it didnt focus on a bunch of Multiverse characters. But they are there eek :jawdrop:
Omg! I loved Elizabeth Olsen. She was great. Never thought I say that

My girlfriend, sister liked it.
My co workers loved it as well.
It thought it was good. Definitely worth a watch if u like Marvel movies

@Avatar 2:
I was telling my girlfriend we better not be late for the trailers. Why? she asks. Because I want to see Avatar πŸ˜‚
The CGI looks great but it didnt didnt give any insite of the story. Maybe I wasnt paying attention. I definitely got to see it in 3D

There will be spoilers in my post!!

Saw it yesterday and enjoyed it a lot, i think its actually more about Scarlet Wicth than Dr Strange, I felt sometimes he was more of an supporting role.

Its pretty dark for a marvel, I liked that and the special effects are amazing. I lovd the world in which 2 realities clashed together.

Anyway, spoilers.....

XMen! There was no reaction in the theater, thought it was pretty amazing to see Patrick Sterwart.

Fantastic Four! Reed Richards is hot. The only thing is his superpower looks weird, as in all the F4 movies, maybe its just really hard to bring it to the screen.

For people who seen it, so in the beginnen when Dr Strange meets Wanda asking for help, she knew al along what was going on right? She was already Scarlet Witch there? Or did I get that wrong?

Yes.

Major Comic book spoiler.
Wanda is the daughter of Magneto. So is Quicksilver
As I recall In the avengers movie their parents died in the war. Was that their real parents or adpoted? Maybe in this universe their parents are really dead.

Scarlets Witch floating stance is dead on Magneto

I'm not circling back to this thread after I post this because not everyone is going to go spoiler free.

I watched Spider-man: No Way Home last night, and it was probably the best Spider-man movie to date. It was funny, action-packed, the story was fantastic, and it was even a bit heartbreaking and poignant at times (especially with Garfield's character finding that moment with MJ).

I love how Doctor Strange was in the story, and it totally made me ready for his movie. And to see Wanda in the post-credit scene was pretty dope, too. I knew at some point they'd circle back to her, given how Wandavision ended. I just wasn't sure when.

I kinda love Phase Four of MCU. There feels like more diversity with characters and stories. Everything from Moon Knight to Shang-Chi, all three Spider-mans in a movie, etc... it's really awesome.

I don't try to keep up with the overall story line. I look for continuity and things that connect them. I would think very few would really know the overall story line in the vast space that is Marvel.

I wonder if someday someone will splice all the movies together to make it one big cohesive moment. Man, talk about a marathon movie.

saw it yesterday .. didn't like it .. seemed like yet another thrown together "just get the badguy" plot .. was hoping for some mindbending plot twists but the multiverse seemed more like a twist to make the trailer than to hinge a lifeless plot on .. the cameos were awful .. the last fantastic 4 movie was much better than this movie .. did move along well .. much better than the avengers where we have hours go by without a superhero costume in sight .. just another paint by numbers superhero movie from disney .. they churn this junk out and don't put a lot of effort into making it new or interesting .. and as someone who does not like harry potter movies the whole point and squint .. must squint harder to make magic work .. formula is hard to sit thru .. and i guess it bugs me when nobody does anything else .. cant even use their own hands to tie a tie .. everything has to be done magically .. ugh .. it's like when they overpowered the jedi and they wipe out a fleet of robots while yawning .. takes all the levity out of magic if absolutely nothing involves physicality .. one for the delete pile for me .. ps professor x wheel chair looked bulky and cumbersome .. does he take a crap in that thing or is his bathroom door as big as a garage door .. thought the spidey movie was a bit better .. enjoyed the first fantastic beasts but the last 2 have been trash .. in my opinion

This alone disqualifies everything else in your post. Everything I read before, disqualified. Didn't have to read anything after...

Disqualified.

I agree with EmmaMcG, it's a really fucking good movie. Loved all of it. Had me jumping a couple of times, taking me back to Raimi's Drag Me To Hell, where I jumped a lot too. Loved the first after credit sequence, not giving anything away, but it's nice to see that one of my absolute favorite actresses is now part of the MCU.

They actually retconned that awhile ago. Magneto is NOT the biological father of Wanda and Pietro.

Yes. I definitely enjoyed it more. Brought my daughter to see it over the weekend. She loved it. She had absolutely no idea who (SPOILERS IN 3...2...1...) Mr Fantastic was though lol . Which reminds me, I need to check and see if the Fantastic Four cartoon is on Disney Plus.

I also should add that I had no idea who (Spoilers) Black Bolt was. I never watched the Inhumans show so that particular cameo made zero impression on me. It's pretty cool that they brought back the original actor and everything but if they wanted to bring back a character from one of their TV shows, it would have made more sense to me if they brought back Quake or one of the other characters from Agents Of Shield.

The fact that nobody seems to like the show just makes that cameo all the more weird. When he shows up in the movie I was "who the fuck is that?". Then Mr Fantastic appears and I swear, it was one of those moments where I was so surprised that I almost didn't even react at all. As the Illuminati are being introduced and Mordo says, "this is Reed Richards from the Fantastic Four" I was just sat there completely lost in the moment. And then, about a half second later, the realization hit me that it was Mr Fantastic in an MCU movie and I let out an audible "what the fuck" lol

Most of the cameos were really well done, I thought. Even Xavier, who they spoiled in the trailer, was accompanied by the X-Men cartoon theme song, which I thought was a nice touch. Captain Carter was great. But now I kind of hope we get more of her. I mean, I know we won't. But I want her anyway.

Captain Marvel was cool too. I wonder if Carol Danvers is still around in that alternate universe.

I do have one question though. Where was Vision in that world? Is he the father to Wanda's children? Does he even exist? If the Ultron bots are used as security for the Illuminati then Ultron probably never turned evil and Vision was probably never created in the first place. I think I have to see the movie again lol

Spoilers

Blacbolt
I was like Blackbolt?! And he had his classic outfit from the comics (that I know). Not that crapy knockoff from the tv show.
I had no idea he was the same actor from the TV show πŸ‘

Mr Fantastic was a surprise!
Damn he got turned into string spaghetti lol
Will he be recasted? πŸ€”

Professor X
excited I noticed the theme song too! lol
He was spoiled in a trailer, I totally over looked it the first time. Also when I went back to view the "main" trailer, I think you hear his voice during the illuminati part.

For a minute when Xavier tapped into Wanda's mind. She went back to her childhood where parents were killed in the bombing. I was like "oh shit!" 😢 We are going to find out the Magneto connection. I grew up with Magnito as the father. But I guess they changed her origin 40 year later?

Vision
Who was the father? Good catch. No sign of one.
It never crossed my mind. He was a robot, how could he be?

I want to guess Vision will be the one to helped or save Wanda from the rubble.

I expected cameos from more the 2 universes we saw. Kinda like spiderman was. But it was still cool to see. Especially when they jumped into action. But that was short lived

I guess they had to change Wanda's parents in the MCU because when they introduced her character and explained her origin Marvel didn't own the movie rights to the X-Men so they weren't allowed to say Magneto was her father. Since then, they have acquired the X-Men rights through their buy-out of 20th Century Fox so technically, they CAN say he's her father now. But that would require a second retcon and perhaps they think that is a step too far. Unless they want to bring her back in their own X-Men movie there's no real need to say Magneto is her father since it's unlikely the characters will ever cross paths. So perhaps it's better if they just leave things as they are.

But while we're talking about the X-Men, I wonder who they're going to cast in their own X-Men movie. Surely Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are too old to be taking on roles that Marvel will likely want them to play long-term, in multiple sequels. So do they go with Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy or do they completely recast the roles to avoid confusion with the previous movies.

I'd be fine either way too but the bigger question is, who plays Wolverine? Hugh Jackman is getting a bit old to play a character that's not supposed to age. But he's so good in the role that whoever they get to replace him will struggle to live up to it.

Also, regarding Hugh Jackman's longevity as Wolverine, Marvel set him up nicely for "Old Man Logan"

Black Bolt was in the movie because he was part of the Illuminati in the comics along with Mister Fantastic, Professor X, Doctor Strange, Iron Man and Namor. Captain America was also part of the group for a short time. With Captain Carter replacing Steve Rogers and Captain Marvel replacing Iron Man, I'm assuming Marvel wanted to keep the rest of the group as comics-acccurate as possible so they included Black Bolt from the TV series. It wouldn't make as much sense to me to have an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. in this clandestine group who steers world events for the greater good. No one other than maybe Nick Fury has that kind of clout.

I see where you're coming from but at the same time, it makes no sense to me to include a character most people won't know. It's a fun Easter egg for the small percentage of moviegoers who read the comics but I think having a more recognizable character would have made that moment mean more. Like, if they replaced him with an Iron Man variant or something it would have served to drive home the point to the audience that this group is a big deal. Rather than saying "here's Mr Fantastic, Captain Carter, Professor X and some guy with a fork on his head".

It's true though, right? There was no explanation in the movie for who this guy is. We know the other characters because they've either been in previous MCU movies or they're famous characters who are widely known. But Fork-Head has only appeared in a shit TV series which was cancelled after only a few episodes.
