COMANCHE

Comanche Indian injured in fighting in Iraq
By Louis Gray

A parents worst nightmare is to receive a phone call from the military to tell them something about their son or daughter. For Joyce Plumely of Red Rock mother of Army Cpl. Charles Eatmon, 32, the call came from her distraught granddaughter.

When I heard, I cried and cried, and I hurt. I prayed every night that something like this wouldnt happenthat he wouldnt get hurt, then I had to stop and realize that hes alive and hes coming home, Plumley said. What she heard was her son had been shot in Iraq.

Eatmon is a member of the 3rd Brigade/3rd Infantry Initial Task Force Armored Regiment, Ft. Benning, GA.

He was shot southeast of Karbala, Iraq on March 26 and they were notified March 30th. The bullet entered his neck and exited under his should leaving a 3-inch hole. Eatmon also sustained shrapnel injuries to his face and chest. He was leading his squad 40 feet behind their Bradley Fighting Vehicle when they came under fire. Eatmon was hit but managed to fire 10 rounds before collapsing when his men dragged him to the Bradley. According to Plumley it took 6 hours before reaching the first MASH unit. He eventually made his way to Kuwait where he was air lifted with other injured soldiers to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany where he made contact with his wife Simone Eatmon of Stillwater to inform her of his condition. She then relayed the message to his oldest daughter Jennifer who said, he is the best dad that anyone could have, I love him very much.

Eatmon has undergone surgery in Washington D.C. at Walter Reed Medical Center and is now at Ft. Benning, GA. His is awaiting another surgery before being able to come home to Stillwater. His youngest daughter LaRyn will soon celebrate her third birthday in may and his wife is expecting a son in June.

On April 2003 the town of Red Rock declared April as Cpl. Charles Eatmon month.
