Spider-Man: No Way Home (SPOILERS)

I seen Spider-Man No Way Home last night and to make a long story short, I loved it. I'm going to go into a bit more detail below so if you don't want spoilers, click off this thread until you've seen the movie.

Ok, first things first, I had zero expectations going in. I have avoided all the rumours and trailers and even though I still heard a few things, I was mostly unspoiled. Although I knew that all the villains from the previous movies were returning, I wasn't completely sold on whether the previous Spider-Men would show up. And they did. Which was nice. And they were in it more than I thought they would be. But they weren't the best cameos in the movie. They were great, don't get me wrong. I grew up watching Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man movies so I couldn't help but get emotional seeing him back as an older Spider-Man. But the best, most surprising cameo was the return of Charlie Cox as Daredevil or, more specifically, Matt Murdoch. It's just a small cameo. He's only in one scene but it solidifies his position within the MCU and almost guarantees his return in a bigger project in the future.

But enough about Daredevil, this is supposed to be a mini review of Spider-Man No Way Home. As I said, the previous Spider-Men are in it more than I had anticipated. But they don't overstay their welcome and crucially, don't detract from Tom Holland's Spider-Man. He still shines and he proves that he's actually a pretty good actor when he's given something that requires him to actually act. Zendaya also takes her performance to the next level here too. However, the best performance in the movie, by a mile, is Willem Dafoe as The Green Goblin. He's always been my favourite comic book movie villain (aside from Jack Nicholson's Joker and Gene Hackman's Lex Luther) and he's on absolute top form in this. In fact, his performance here actually makes the first Tobey Maguire movie better because you see a different side to him that we didn't really see before. Alfred Molina is great too. The other villains don't really have much to do but it's nice having them here all the same.

My only real criticism of the movie is that in the climactic fight scene, I kind of lost track of which Spider-Man was which. Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield have incredibly similar looking costumes. But that's a fairly minor complaint.

Overall, a great movie, Tom Holland's best Spider-Man movie. Andrew Garfield's best Spider-Man movie. Tobey Maguire's third best Spider-Man movie. I still prefer the first two Maguire movies. But again, No Way Home is still a fantastic movie in its own right. Plus, we're definitely getting a sequel!

Post credits scenes;
The first scene is, at first glance, just a funny little add-on for fans of Venom. But we do get a hint that the MCU is about to have its own Venom and, thankfully, it probably won't be Tom Hardy.

The second scene is just a trailer for Dr Strange 2, which looks like it might be interesting. I was wondering who the villain might be so to find out that it's Dr Strange himself (or not himself?) was kind of cool.

I will skip the spoilers

My niece (11yrs old) called me a few days ago. She was like "Uncle, the new Spiderman movie comes out Friday. I think we should go see it"
lol
I said ok, maybe friday or Saturday.

I can't wait to see it. The advance screening are playing tomorrow (Thursday) but I think friday will work for me.

Be back once I see it👍

I guess I enjoyed it, but I'm not really sure. As it usually is with Marvel movies. Something about it works, but the storytelling is usually weak, things just seem to happen to show big action pieces. I found the motivations and behaviours of both Spider-Man and the villains very odd. Electro is a very weak character and the acting was strange, to say the least. The chemistry between the main characters is great, that's the strength of these Spider-Man movies.

Hey loudmouth, shut the fuck up, right?

Electro was a weak character in the Amazing Spider-Man movie that he was in. Pretty much everyone in those Andrew Garfield movies were crap. Which makes it a minor miracle that Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man is actually quite good in No Way Home.

I don't understand what you mean by their motivations being odd though? It seems fairly simple. Spider-Man doesn't want to condemn the villains to death because he knows that if they return to their own universes as they are, then their own Spider-Man will kill them. Which, in Tom Holland's Spider-Man's mind, almost makes him responsible. So he wants to save them by taking that villainous part of them away so that when they return to their own universes they won't be villains anymore and therefore won't die. The villains are all happy to go along with it until the Green Goblin part of Norman's personality takes over and puts a stop to it. Norman wants Spider-Man to help (as he also did in the original movie) but the Goblin doesn't. Also, Electro still craves power so he changes his mind on going along with the plan when he sees the arc reactor. The only villain who's motivations are somewhat murky is Sandman. But that's in keeping with his character. He's a good man who wants to do the right thing but often opts for the easy way out.

There's a whole load of hidden cameos just before Dr Strange closes the multiverse door/portal thing. Rhino, Kraven, Scorpion. A whole bunch more. I don't know if those other characters appear but it's possible, I guess?

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Swinging to Massive $240 Million-Plus Debut After Record-Breaking Opening Day
J. Kim Murphy • Dec 18, 2021 • Variety

After months of pandemic-wary patrons and tepid numbers, this year of recovery for the domestic box office is at least going out with a bang. “Spider-Man: No Way Home” webbed up a truly mind-boggling $121.5 million on Friday from 4,336 locations, putting itself on the path toward a projected $242 million opening weekend.

That’s a performance the likes of which haven’t been seen since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” which hit a $156.7 million opening day, months before the world had even heard about COVID-19. Not only is “No Way Home” the first pandemic-era film to surpass the $100 million mark in its first weekend of release, but its success outmeasures the parameters of a pandemic-era box office in general. The film scored the second highest opening day in the history of the domestic box office. The $121.5 million single-day total also measures up as the highest December opening ever and a franchise-best for Sony’s “Spider-Man” series, outperforming the three-day totals of 2017’s “Homecoming” ($117 million) and 2019’s “Far From Home” ($92 million) in just one outing.

The film has garnered positive reviews as well, with Variety‘s chief film critic Peter Debruge praising it as a “satisfying meta-adventure.” What’s more, it currently holds a 94% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences offering a near bulletproof 99% approval rating, indicating good word-of-mouth.

Next to a behemoth like “No Way Home,” every other release looked like small potatoes. Even then, Searchlight Pictures’ “Nightmare Alley” is kicking off to muted numbers at best. Guillermo del Toro’s latest earned $1.192 million from 2,145 locations on Friday and is headed for a three-day total of $2.83 million, good for a No. 5 debut. The film has garnered major awards buzz and boasts an impressive cast of stars that includes Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe and Rooney Mara. Still, the film landed a tepid “B” CinemaScore, indicating mild approval from general ticket buyers, which doesn’t bode well for the word-of-mouth “Alley” would need to have healthy multipliers at the box office.

Disney’s “Encanto” will land in second with a projected $6.78 million three-day total. The animated adventure has been holding remarkably well since its Thanksgiving holiday debut, with this fourth weekend representing a mere 32% drop-off from its previous outing. The film will exceed an $80 million domestic gross by Monday.

Sony’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” will take third with a projected $3.92 million weekend. After opening big a week ahead of Thanksgiving, the comedy sequel has ridden solid word-of-mouth to propel it past a $110 million gross at the domestic box office.

Finally, 20th Century Studios’ “West Side Story” might be beginning to face the music. Steven Spielberg’s imagining of the classic musical is facing a hard 67% drop in its second weekend, heading for a three-day gross of $3.47 million. What’s more, the film’s $1.06 million Friday gross is only a hair above its Monday gross of $1.05 million, indicating that general audiences don’t feel the need to use their weekends to rush out to see the musical. Those numbers aren’t high enough to put the film on the path to matching its $100 million production budget.

Spoilers included

A bit slow at parts. But I enjoyed it. Emotional at times, More for the excitement of seeing past characters

A few things I didnt like, mind you they are minor.
(Andrew) Spiderman comes through the portal and unmasks himself in front of strangers.
We get the Spidey/Doc Oc battle. Incomes the Gobblin. Im expecting another battle, and it comes to an abrupt end. WTF!
All 3 Spidermen start crying lol
When Spidey takes the box from Dr strange. I was like he's kind of annoying.
Not enough on the bad guys

One thing I did l like, at the end of the movie Peter ditched the Stark? Outfit and went with the traditional home made spider suit

What @Emma said
I was on the same boat. Stayed away from spoilers, heard the rumors. Didn't believe they would bring both of the previous Spidermen back.
Dafoe was great 👍
It was a bit hard to tell which Spider man was during the battle. But I guess it doesn't matter much.

@Matt Murdoch
For me this was a pleasant surprise! We may see the Daredevil soon? Maybe another cameo somewhere. The Kingpin made an appearance in the latest Hawkeye show.

@ Venom
Venom was a favorite of mine in the comic books. Sure I'll watch his movies, but honestly I dont care for them.
Anywho @ his cameo. I didnt like it. He goes back to his own universe, left a piece of symbiote behind. So now we might see another Venom in this universe? Does this mean Spiderman wont appear in the Venom movies? Assuming they make more. Maybe Venom will have an alternate Spiderman? At this point I dont care lol just rhetorical questions

@ Ned
I dont remember the exact lines, but if you seen the movie you know what I'm talking about.
Ned asks (Toby) Peter did you have a best friend? Peter says his friend died. Ned say something in the lines of "Please dont kill me" As soon as I heard that I was like he is gonna die lol One thig I noticed, I maybe be wrong here. But Neds jacket colors are the colors of the Hobgoblin.

@ Dr Stange trailer
I did recognize 1 character. I dont know its name. It was that octopus looking thing with an big eye in the center. Did they show the Kang the Conqueror from the Loki series? It was too much to take in. I'd like to see it again.

Did you also notice the posters for Rogers: The Musical? That's the show Clint sees with his family in the first episode of Hawkeye. I thought that was a nice little touch.

There's been some rumours of Daredevil appearing in the Echo show. And that was before Kingpin showed up in Hawkeye and was revealed to be the man behind everything. I would guess that the Echo show will have Echo tracking down Kingpin and if that's the case, I'd say it's almost a guarantee that Daredevil will feature at some point.

I liked the Venom cameo purely BECAUSE he went back to his own universe. I'd like the character of Venom to go up against Spider-Man in the MCU but I don't want it to be the Tom Hardy version. I can't understand a word that man says, haha.

I didn't get to pay close attention to the Dr Strange trailer so I'm sure I missed a few things. I didn't see Kang but I know he's going to be in Ant Man 3 so I wouldn't be surprised if he shows up in Dr Strange too.

1000% this. Spider-Man 2 is still my all time favorite Spider-Man movie.

You didn't mention whether or not the movie made you cry. It made me cry a lot. I got so emotional during this movie that I was kinda embarrassed. The last five minutes specifically were absolutely gut-wrenching.

Movies, in general, don't make me cry. But I did feel oddly emotional just seeing Tobey Maguire show up. I was 12 when his first Spider-Man movie came out and I put him in the same category as Christopher Reeve's Superman and Michael Keaton's Batman as THE definitive version of a superhero. So no tears but admittedly, it was close.

Funnily enough, my biggest two reactions during the movie was when Matt Murdock appeared and when Norman Osborn said "I'm something of a scientist myself". The Daredevil show is still my favourite MCU project so when he showed up I let out an audible squeal of excitement. Then, when Norman said the "scientist" line I almost lost it. I find myself quoting his lines from the first movie all the time, much to the annoyance of my daughter, so when he said that I couldn't help but laugh.

Yeah it was only rumours that Daredevil was going to appear in Echo. But following his appearance in Spider-Man and Kingpin's return in Hawkeye, I think it's more likely now that we'll see Daredevil show up in the Echo show.

I seen most of the first Venom but I hated it. So I'm so personally happy that the MCU will have a different Venom.

I don't know which tv show is next, but I know Ms. Marvel, Secret Invasion, Moon Knight and She Hulk are coming. She Hulk was a lawyer in the comics. Maybe she can tie in with Matt Murdoch/Daredevil hmmm

Btw. when I seen the She Hulk and Ms Marvel teasers I thought they were YouTube fan-made fakes lol

oh and make sure to watch "Hawkeye" on Disney + (or your alternative means of choice). It seems that it is 6 episodes (the last one is this week: maybe Wednesday?) but it is very good.

I can't help but think that if her spin off show really is a team up with Daredevil that they should call it See No Evil Hear No Evil lol . Just do a superhero remake of the Gene Wilder/Richard Pryor movie. I'd pay good money to see that!

But yeah, I've never heard of that character before either.

The She-Hulk show and Ms Marvel definitely look like they have much smaller budgets than some of the others. But that could work in their favour. Either way, I'm looking forward to both. Tim Roth is back as Abomination in She-Hulk and like you said, Daredevil could very well show up in that too. Ms Marvel is going to lead directly into The Marvels (AKA Captain Marvel 2) and Captain Marvel is one of my daughter's favourite movies ever so I'm kind of excited for her to see it.
