Ghostbusters Afterlife (SPOILERS)

Well, I did it. I'm 9 months pregnant, about to give birth any day now, but I wasn't going to let that stop me from seeing this movie. And now that I've seen it I can safely say "I LOVE THIS MOVIE".

Where do I even start? I've waited my entire life for this movie. Ever since I was a little girl I wanted to be a Ghostbuster. Our VHS tape (both movies on one tape!) was worn out. I must have seen the original movies well over a thousand times. I can quote the entire script for both of them. I had hoped that the 2016 movie would do justice to the original but once the cast were announced I knew it would be bad. And then I found out that Paul Feig was directing and that ended any hope I had for it. And then I finally watched it and it was even WORSE than I feared.

BUT!!!

Finally, here comes Jason Reitman (son of Ivan) to give me what I always wanted. A worthy follow-up to my favourite childhood movies. The Ghostbusters 3 I never thought I'd get. It gets the nostalgia just right. There is a constant stream references and nods to the original movies without it ever feeling forced. The original cast are back but crucially, not really the focus of the movie. Instead, they serve to set up another sequel (those post credits scenes!) while this movie is all about the new cast, led by a very impressive young actress as Egon's granddaughter as she discovers herself and where she fits in the world. The

There is so much more I could say, and I will, but for now I'll leave it there so as not to spoil too much of the movie for those who haven't seen it yet. But please do go see it. Especially if you're a fan of the original movies.

Good movie, not as amazing as the first, not as dear as the second, but I agree it was a very nice nostalgia fest. I'm actually glad they didn't go much further than that for this episode, and if they do a follow-up it has good stuff to work with.

Still it's nice to know, when our bodies wear out, we can get another

It was never going to be as good as the first two. And even if, by some miracle, that it was actually better than the original, I don't think I'd be able to acknowledge that it was better. Like, I'm not sure if I'd even know. Like I said in my original post, I've seen the first two movies hundreds of times and they are just so special to me. They can't be topped.

Afterlife is the perfect follow up though. Yes, it's got the nostalgia. But it's also its own thing. It's technically not even a Ghostbusters movie when you think about it. It's a movie about one of the Ghostbusters' family as they come to terms with his death and learn where they fit, both in the wider world and with their departed ghost busting relative. And on paper, that doesn't work. I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting a full on Ghostbusters 3 that brings back all the original cast, that is set in New York City and has them battling all manner of ghosts and monsters. But that would have been a disaster. They're all too old for that shit. So the fact that Afterlife works as well as it does, providing some excellent call backs to the originals but also setting up the future of the franchise is a testament to Jason Reitman. Unlike the prick who did the 2016 version, Jason Reitman is clearly taking this seriously. He knows how much it means to the fans. And given that the lead is a 12 year old girl, it proves that the 2016 version wasn't hated just because it had women in it, it was hated because it was shit.

I don't get emotional watching movies. Some things like Up or Toy Story 3 will get my eyes a little wet but for the most part, I'm pretty stoic. But I don't mind saying that there was one particular scene in Afterlife that had me crying my eyes out. Anyone who's seen the movie will know the scene I'm talking about. And then they went and played THE song over the end credits and that had me crying again.

It was after the credits...I stayed and saw...the film had many comical parts in it and any references to the first 2 original films..rotten tomatoes gave it a crappy review ...to me they are full of u know what IMHO

Thanks smile

It's kind of like Stranger Things. But mostly because they're both very similar to Spielberg's stuff. It has more in common with ET than anything else.

I stayed for both scenes. The mid credits scene and the post credits scene. I really hope this movie does well because I really like the direction they're going in and I'd love another movie. Perhaps the next movie might see the Ghostbusters reopen their business in New York. Obviously the original crew are too old now but they can still hang around as advisers to the new team. And speaking of the new team, we've already got Phoebe and Trevor Spengler. Maybe Phoebe would still be too young to be a full fledged Ghostbuster but her brother should be old enough by the time a sequel comes around. Winston mentions that he had kids so his son or daughter could join the team. And then you've got Oscar. Any child raised by Peter Venkman has just got to be involved. So in the new team of Ghostbusters, we've got a Zeddemore, a Venkman (assuming he took Peter's name after Peter and Dana married) and a couple of Soenglers.

A lot of the negative reviews I've seen are bullshit. They seem to be mostly criticising the movie for just existing. A few of them specifically mention that its existence is "disrespectful" to the 2016 version and is made only for "fanboys" who were angry that the 2016 version were women. Well, speaking as a woman, I can safely say that the reason the 2026 version is hated is not because of the women. It's because of the shit script, unfunny performances, terrible special effects, amateur directing and its overall soulless vibe.

The Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score for Ghostbusters Afterlife is 96%. That is a much more accurate metric. They made the movie for fans of the original movies. And fans of the original movies like it.

I completely agree with you on the all girl GB ..
..I seen it and hated it...even my own daughter saw the all girl GB and didn't like it...she is 26...she seen both 1 and 2 original movies and loved them....I laughed so hard with afterlife and cried...I went to NYC and visited some of the movie locations...the fountain in the first movie and university as well as the GB firehouse..yes it still stands and has the GB sign displayed....this was back in 92...all I can day IMHO it was beautifully done

Yeah I hated the 2016 Ghostbusters movie. My cousin hated it. My sister hated it. My then 7 year old daughter hated it. We're all female. The gender of the team were not the problem. The direction, writing and acting were the problems.

I've visited several of the locations from the original movies too. I even ran down the steps of the library to recreate the scene where the guys run away just after the "Get Her" scene at the beginning of the movie lol

Yeah that was hilarious. All throughout that scene I was fighting back the tears. Then you know who shows up and that finished me off. Who would have thought a Ghostbusters movie could be so emotional? And when Winston told him that he missed him and that he should have called.... It was almost like for that moment, he wasn't in character. He was Ernie Hudson and he was talking to his old friend one more time. I'm getting emotional now just thinking about it.

I can't wait to see it again. As soon as this baby is born I'm going straight back to the cinema lol

As a massive fan of the first film I'm really looking forward to seeing this.

The Guardian in the UK gave it a scathing review: https://www.theguardian.c...udd-review

... being a very left-leaning publication it seems like they slammed Afterlife just because people weren't very nice about the 2016 film, which is a bit childish. The 2016 was an utter turd, not because it had a female cast but because the script was awful. Seems most fans of the original are really enjoying Afterlife, so that's a good sign.

I've been think about the movie and I still encourage anybody to not nitpick this movie too much and enjoy the ride. I think Paul Rudd can do no wrong, the mom as a character is very entertaining, and the lead Phoebe has a few strong performances, not to mention her foil friend is actually funny and a great addition.

The script itself is designed to serve the lore and the love of the franchise. Specifically the first movie. It's not a very strong script plotwise, and there are some interesting leaps in logic. Again, this could have been a super tight script, but as mentioned by Emma it's already NOT truly a Ghostbusters movie. The original and part 2 walked very heavily in 80s culture satire. Capitalism, the New York spirit, and humorous cynicism, featuring a group of schlubs (suck in the gut, guys) who were in the right places at the right times if not for the wrong reasons.

I'm very glad they were able to get this in the theaters, very happy the actors were able to make it to the screen as a group again. Hope you all enjoy

No. None of the original cast are in it all that much. Believe it or not, Harold Ramis has the biggest role of all the original cast. Sigourney Weaver only shows up in a mid-credis scene. But just like with the Ghostbusters, her cameo is perfect. I really love how they use the original cast. Sparingly but to great effect.

Just watched it and loved it. Had a great feel about it. And you were right, Sigourneys cameo was excellent. Being a huge sigourney fan I would’ve liked more screen time, but who knows what another sequel may bring

My guess is that a sequel will see have them setting up the company again and for that, they'll need a new Ghostbusters team. I assume Phoebe and possibly her brother will be part of that team but they'll need more senior members. That's where I think Sigourney Weaver will play a bigger role. Dana won't be strapping on a proton pack but her son, Oscar, likely will, following in the footsteps of his adopted father. Then, to round out the team, one of Winston's kids will likely be part of that set up. Given that Winston seems to be catalyst behind keeping the Ghostbusters alive, I think Winston Junior might even end up as a sort of team leader.
