Do you wear a seat belt when you drive?

Some facts about seat belts.

  1. Seat belts do not prevent car accidents.
  2. Most car accidents are caused by people wearing seat belts.
  3. Seat belt use can cause injuries and there are documented deaths caused by seat belts.

What Injuries Can Seat Belts Cause?

Some of the common injuries that seat belts can cause are:

  • Bruised or fractured ribs
  • Chest and sternum injuries
  • Shoulder injuries
  • Abdominal soft tissue tear
  • Abrasions and lacerations
  • Death

Is this really something that you want to make your children to put on when 98.33% of people don't even have an accident in any given year and most of those are non fatal?

We are being forced through higher car prices to line the pockets of the seat belt manufacturers for what is an inneffective and often dangerous "safety" device all to prevent something that is extremely low risk in the first place.

Maybe you'd think differently if you've ever worked a bad car wreck, and one where people were ejected because they didn't wear a seat belt.

Wearing a seat belt is a law here also.

Reminds me a of a discussion a group of us had many years ago, mostly about how cars were better built when they were metal, seat belts and accidents were brought up and somebody made the joke that all you had to do was hose off the dashboard and fix the dent and the car was good to go. Personally I have no desire to go flying through a windshield in the event of a major accident I'll take a dislocated anything over a busted open skull. Ok it's time to watch Demolition Man with it's safety foam cars.

Yes, it is and everyone should be wearing one. They saves lives. My cousin was in an accident years ago and wasn't wearing his and he was ejected and left paralyzed from the waist down. He was only 19 and died at 58 from the many complications he endured for the rest of his life.

People who don't wear seat belts are fu***d in the head. I was in a rollover car accident and wearing a seat belt possibly saved my life. And at the very least, saved me from having serious injuries.

Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

Interesting responses.

Seems that everyone thinks that all of my arguments against seatbelt use are illogical and worthy of ridicule.

It’s surprising because when the same arguments are used for certain other topics, they usually garner more support. It makes me wonder how much emotion, ideology and politics inhibits people’s ability to employ a rationalistic
epistemology.

  1. Most car accidents are caused by people wearing seat belts.

But it's not the seat belt causing the accident. it's the driver

To me they aren't but there's a few "different" folks out there. But whatever the comparison was, it sure wasn't based around the sexy factor.

The airbag was invented so you won't crack your skull and/or rib cage when you hit the steering wheel in a head on collision.
Ever wondered what the letters 'SRS' on your airbag mean?

SRS = Supplement (to the) Restraint System.

An airbag ONLY works effectively when seatbelts are worn.
There's a delicate finetuning in timing of maximum bag inflation and head hitting the airbag.
That timing is disrupted when you don't wear a seatbelt.
Your head arrives too soon at the steering wheel, just when the bag deploys.

Don't know wheter you've ever seen a slow motion video of an airbag deploying, but it's a brute force. It's an explosive charge, generating gas which deploys and inflates the airbag.
You don't want to be near that when that happens. It will most probably cost your life.

When I worked at Autoliv (aseatbelt and airbag manufacturer) in 1995-1997, I witnessed several Conformity of Product airbag/seatbelt test in the prototype phase.
It was also the time when there were reports of children (sitting opposite to the driving direction in child seats on the passenger seat) being decapitated by deploying passenger airbags.
