Peter Scolari has died

Deadline

Peter Scolari, the prolific television and stage actor who found instant fame and a lifelong friendship with Tom Hanks when the two co-starred in the hit 1980 TV comedy Bosom Buddies, died early this morning following a two-year battle with cancer. He was 66.

His death was announced by Ellen Lubin Sanitsky at Wright Entertainment.

Scolari’s 43-year show business career included such highlights as his Emmy-nominated series regular role of producer Michael Harris on Bob Newhart’s 1984-90 comedy Newhart, an Emmy-winning recurring role as the father of Lena Dunham’s character on HBO’s Girls, and, most recently, his role as Bishop Thomas Marx on the CBS supernatural drama Evil.

A partial roster of other TV credits include Fosse/Verdon, Madoff, The Good Fight, Murphy Brown, The West Wing, ER, Gotham, Law & Order: SVU, Ally McBeal, From The Earth To The Moon and Honey I Shrunk The Kids: The TV Show, to name a relative few. Film credits include The Polar Express and a cameo appearance as a TV host in the 1996 comedy-drama That Thing You Do!, directed by and starring his old friend and co-star Hanks.

Sad to hear. I used to watch this show on occasion but Perfect Strangers mostly.

Going back in time on memory I used to get these 2 shows mixed up and it was because

the shows were written and produced by the same production team. Family Matters was also a spinoff

of Perfect Strangers thanks to Harriet Winslow's role on the show.

So sad to read. Met him a few years ago at the Chiller Expo in NJ. Very nice guy. I read that Tom Hanks and him remained friends throughout the years..R.I.P.

The first thing that comes to mind is the Bosom Buddies clip from the opening where the guys are sunbathing in a parking spot. Peter adds a quarter and goes back to lie down. He's wearing little '80s shorts and looks pretty damn good. Yes, I am gay.

I remember that! He was a hunk.

I think there was a scene in Trapper John MD were Gonzo was on top of his RV (he lived in it in the hospital's parking lot) sunbathing. Gregory Harrison was hot as a firecracker. He was hot in For Ladies Only, too. Major spank bank material. Also, the blond on Simon & Simon, Jameson Parker. WOOF. I think there was an episode where they were at a nudist camp (below), and showed up for dinner naked. But quickly realized they dressed for dinner there.

But Peter Scolari was always adorable. He could slide whatever he wanted in my slot.

Nice pic & gif!

Was that some kind of crossover? I see Magnum P.I. in the background. I never watched his show, but I'd occasionally catch him in his little shorts. God I miss those little '80s shorts.

Hanks had a nice tribute to his former costar on last night's Kimmel. Talked about his gymnast's physique, and their male bonding on a show with all women. I didn't think they were that close considering they hardly worked together in 40 years.

He got quite emotional at the end. It's probably on YouTube.
