The roommate got a 4K Hisense with Roku, and he loves it. 55", it's a great TV. He paid under $300 for it when he got it a couple of years ago (or was it last year? I forget).

I never quite trusted RCA. They were always a poor man's version. LG is solid as a brand. Maybe check Hisense, Sony, and Vizio. You'd be surprised at the deals you'd find on those.

Here in Holland we consider LG the poor mans Philips and most of there stuf isn't that great.
I have a earlier (2018 model) 4K Sony 42" in the bedroom for €250 during black friday.

Yeah, my roommate got a Sony 55" 4K just a few short years ago for the living room. It's stellar, although the apps on it are rudimentary (compared to other app stores). The basics are there, but it's slim pickings otherwise.

Mine is a Android TV with Chromecast so teh apps are pretty good.

That sounds much better, as far as the apps go. We've long since been FireTV and/or Roku users, so I suppose the Sony app store (and the lack of quality therein) falls by the wayside.

I use a Raspberry Pi for most of my apps and Kodi to stream.
I use the apps on the TV only for the 'official' apps (Disney+, Netflix, Spotify etc.) and to stream from my NAS because my Raspi doesn't support 4K streamin (yet).
I used to stream Youtube from my phone to my TV but with the ads lately that has become unusable and I'm still trying to figure out how to stream YoutubeVanced to my TV (or Raspberry pi) so I won't have any ads.

If you're on a tight budget, you're better off going for a high quality 1080p than a cheap hot mess 4K.
