Thanks a lot for the in-depth reply Emma. I immensely enjoy your presence and your posts here on the org, you are one of the main reasons why I still enjoy coming back to this place, and I like your writing style and admire your general knowledge of all pop-cultural things, be it music, movies, TV shows or games.

Very much appreciated.

Aw you're making me blush razz I have nobody at home to talk to about stuff like this so the org is really my only outlet for it.

I could seriously imagine you working for a lifestyle or popculture magazine.

I wonder what prompted Halle Berry to sign up for Catwoman, I mean she must´ve read the script and she could´ve known it was going to be bad but hey, anybody can make a mistake or two in a long career but what I don´t understand is why Robert De Niro has made such terrible choices since the early 2000s. He was such a serious actor and now people differentiate between pre 2000s and new millenum De Niro.

Does he really need the money?

I quite like some of his less than stellar movies and find them entertaining on TV or DVD, for example Analyze This and its sequel Analyze That, or those Fockers movies with Ben Stiller but it´s still strange to see such a class actor in such odd movies. I watched Dirty Grandpa the other day and was very surprised to see how much money it generated.

Money

The answer is always money.

I thought so, but still.....his choices are tarnishing his reputation. Can someone really be that desperate?

Could be. I'm thinking about Leonard Cohen who was ripped off by his manager and had to go on tour again at his old age. Which turned out to be pretty succesful. Compared to him, Robert de Niro has it easy. At least he doesn't have to travel the world and I'm sure these movies aren't very hard work for him. And just like Prince will always be remembered for Purple Rain and not for HitNRun 1, De Niro will always be remembered for Taxi Driver and his other great films.
If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

Robert De Niro in Dirty Grandpa.

.

The critics ripped it to shreds. It has an approval rating of 11% on Rotten Tomatoes.

I watched it because of the bad reviews but I must admit I didn´t find it THAT bad.

And after watching it I read some of the negative reviews and started looking for positive reviews, and the few critics who wrote a positive review did make some valuable points. lol

De Niro said in an interview that he wanted to make a few movies that his grandchildren could watch. Not that it makes it any better of a movie because it doesn't, but I get where he's coming from.

If I had the time or energy I'd do a little blog or something. My cousin told me I should do something like that for movie recommendations and reviews etc. I'm 100% sure she only said it so that I'd stop bugging her to watch stuff she has no interest in though lol

I actually like some of those more recent De Niro movies...it´s just unusual to see him doing them. wink

I found The Intern (with Anne Hathaway) pretty entertaining. (Probably because I'm at a point age-wise where I can relate to De Niro's character's story.) doh! lol

DeNiro doesn't owe anybody anything. He can do what he wants as far as I'm concerned.

Since we're talking about superheroes, how about George Clooney in Batman and Robin?

Or Val Kilmer in Batman Forever for that matter?

Jared Leto WIl Smith and Margot Robbie in Suicide Squad?

It's a long list and this is a fun thread.

I'm a bad movie connoisseur of sorts.

Well there are a few things I do like about Superman 3. Well first of all Chhristopher Reeve was still good in the role despite a terrible story. Superman turning bad and the scene with Superman fighting his alter ego Clark Kent was interesting. The introduction of Lana Lang played by Annette O'Toole (perfect choice for the role and as we all know the future Martha Kent in Smallville) was also good. But the most important part of any movie, the story which was total garbage. From what I read is that originally Superman 3 was going to have Braniac and Mxyzptlk in it. Producers heard that Richard Pryor was a fan of the Superman movies and scrapped having Braniac and Mxyzptlk in the movie and went with casting Richard Pryor instead.............yeah I know doh!. I like Robert Vaughn and Richard Pryor but not for Superman 3. Robert Vaughn Character was basically Lex Luthor, so what's the point??? Even Richard Pryoor thought the movie was bad and did it just for the money, can't blame him for that. Also there were plans of having Supergirl in Superman 3 as well. Oh what might have been.

I read that the writers wanted Richard Pryor to improvise so they deliberately under-wrote his character, expecting him to flesh it out himself. But because he was such a fan, he made a conscious decision not to improvise and just stick to the script as it was written. I don't know how true that it but it explains a lot.

In his autobiography he also says that he refused to do the movie if he had to act with Margot Kidder. She was an ex girlfriend of his and he was trying to stay clean and drug-free but he knew she was still an addict and wanted to avoid the temptation. So she was effectively written out of the movie to suit Richard Pryor. By all accounts, he enjoyed making the movie and even though he didn't particularly like the finished product, he enjoyed working with Christopher Reeve. He also spoiled the ending on Carson months before the movie released lol

I also read that Margot Kidder sided with Richard Donner thus producers made her appearance in Superman 3 as more of a cameo (But we did get to see Lana Lang so that's a plus out of that). Yeah I'm sure it was fun to work on the set of Superman 3, I could be wrong but I always got the impression that Christopher Reeve was kinda of a nice guy in real life. Superman 3 also ruined the Supergirl movie the following year. With Superman 3 being so bad Christopher Reeve didn't want to appear in that movie as well.

If that's true it was a terrible idea for Superman 3, sounded like they wanted a Robin Williams performance.

They wanted a Richard Pryor performance. He explains in his autobiography that he thought the script was awful but they were offering him 5 million dollars so he accepted and performed the scenes as written. He knew it was shit but a combination of him not wanting to get fired and his genuine love for the previous Superman movies made him unwilling to improvise. And nobody told him otherwise. Afterwards he was told that they expected him to improvise but he believes that might have been the writers just making an excuse for writing a shit movie. One way or another though the movie was shit.

But at least Warner Bros learned their lesson and never fired another director after two successful movies, only to replace him with a stooge and try to lighten the tone of the third and fourth movies. Oh, wait... Nevermind. razz
