Name a sequel that is better than the original

Usually the original is always the best but can you name some sequels that are better than the original?

For me it is

The nutty professor 2 (watched it for the first time in years the other night and I literally was laughing almost the entire time
Terminator 2-better effects and I believe everyone I know thinks part 2 is better,if not the best of the entire franchise

The Godfather 2

Mad Max 2 (a.k.a The Road Warrior)

The Empire Strikes Back ....but I must admit that Ufoclub has some great arguments why the very first Star Wars movie is really the best wink

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Everything. When you read The Shining, which I actually did for the first time just before Doctor Sleep book came out, I was stunned at how much I missed just depending on the movie to tell the story of the Overlook Hotel and the Torrence family. So much more background story and context to the whole thing. Plus, the hotel freezes in the movie. It burns to the ground in the book. The topiaries actually try to kill people in the book; the movie just has that maze. The book is much more immersive.

Kubrik still captured great moments to tell a non-verbal story in the film. One being how Jack is throwing a ball against the wall, which happens to have a Native America mural on it. That's political, and that's an interesting subtext. There are similar things throughout the movie like that.

Doctor Sleep picked up on all those things, and carried it into a new generation, as a movie (and book). Danny revisiting the hotel, and fighting these soul suckers in RVs felt like a valid sequel. What else would they talk about? Danny as an adult, still dealing with his shining was the logical choice. The story was rich, and textured, and the movie (directed by horror fan Mike Flannigan who also did The Haunting of Hill House) captures all the nuances of the book.

Yes, people can go on and on about Kubrik and filmmaking, but he butchered The Shining into something that only vaguely resembled the S.K. novel.

As far as novels: they both are amazing.

Movies: D.S. beats T.S. by far. That's not knocking anyone's performance. It's knocking Kubrik's mutilation of a great story.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I'm not saying the sequels I listed are better than the original, but I do feel they were able to captured the feel/vibe of the original film that most sequels don't

Seriously? Most fans hated Conan The Destroyer. I always thought I was the only one who liked it. wink

It´s not really a bad Conan movie and it´s a gazillion times better than the Jason Momoa version but it was made for kids and teenagers, whereas the first part was for grown folks.

Part II also lacked the genius of Oliver Stone and John Milius. Part one had great all around chemistry...the music, direction, screenplay....just a great fantasy movie.

But yes, The Destroyer was not that bad, either, and deserves more recognition. It had some great scenes.

I liked Rambo II as a kid but in hindsight, part I will always be my favorite of the franchise. I know almost every single line in Rambo II, especially that scene with Co Bao . lol

I actually like it though I've only seen the full director's cut. I never saw the theatrical version. It's nowhere near as good as The Shining but still an enjoyable sequel to both the book and the movie.

I really enjoyed the book Doctor Sleep. It was a quality sequel to the Shining novel. NOT BETTER but a very good continuation of the story. I don't the movie did quite as well and don't think its better than Kubricks Shining (which I think of as on its own, seperate from the novel, since the two are so different).

There are two sequels that are better than the originals...Godfather II and Superman II (esp the Donner version). Did I see above someone said Halloween 2 and Jaws 2 are better than t he originals?? You've got to be stoned lol lol

If you think being faithful to the book will make a great movie, I challenge you to watch Stephen King's version, which was an endless miniseries. Or it felt endless. I could not stay conscious while watching it.

And actually, when you boil it down, both book and first adaptation were about an abusive husband and father. A lot of the details are different, but both are extraordinary.

Also, I much prefer the subtle powers of the first film and book to the X-Men like shenanigans of DS.

I've definitely watched that. It did feel a bit long in the tooth.

I agree about the abusive father. That's why I wish it would be a mini-series, not a film. Just shoot out six episodes. Let the plot play out. Let the hotel be the last 2.5 episodes. Let the first half be that backstory w/ Danny's broken arm, etc. And also, the entity talking to Danny. He only looks crazy in Kubrik's film talking with his finger. It makes way more sense in the context of the book.

I suppose, for now, it's one of those things that has never really been done justice. I look at Lisey's Story on AppleTV+ right now. It's unfolding so wonderfully over 7 episodes (one more to go). King wrote the series, and one guy directed it. So it very much keeps its mood throughout.

Maybe, one day, AppleTV+ or the folks at Disney or somewhere will lay into this book and make it right. The abusive father storyline is compelling. In Kubrick's movie, he's just kind of a dick being haunted by a hotel... or something.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

But the kid doesn't look crazy. I mean, at first he does, but then Kubrick lets you into his head when the cook speaks to him telepathically. At that point, you know that Tony is something real. It's easy when an author can just tell you everything, but Kubrick lets you experience it, and keeps it mysterious. You're faulting a movie for not being a book. It's just silly.

There you go- I was in elementary school when Conan The Destroyer would come on Sat. afternoon television. I was in high school when I finally saw the 1st Conan, which was cool but the 2nd one was what I grew up on.

That's entirely untrue. I'm faulting Kubrick for getting the way of a great story and what could've been a great movie. He was the modern day Hitchcock, torturing his actors for his own ego. I'm just not impressed with him as a filmmaker. Especially in this case.
