Rate the Last Movie You Saw - Spring 2021

OIP.3tKs_m45xuX2dTXa1XWRogHaHa?w=148&h=180&c=7&o=5&dpr=1.61&pid=1.7

What a character. Viola Davis was probably in just a third of the movie, but she was mesermizing in every scene she was in. IN addition to Ma, the film focued on how Black people navigated racism in the 1920s.

3.25 stars out of 4.

Promising Young Woman (2020)

A young woman, traumatized by a tragic event in her past, seeks out vengeance against those who crossed her path.

Fennell's unsettling film has a powerful, provocative message. Its core strength and its biggest flaw is that it is as comedic as it is dramatic. I felt like it teetered on the edge of collapse in the final act, but it stuck the landing in a pretty satisfying way. But this movie doesn't work without Carey Mulligan, who carries and balances this film about common trauma inflicted by men and women, on women. Shout out to Molly Shannon and LaVerne Cox for their turns as well.

That was a strange film almost a throwback to something set in a stylized theatrical reality like "Heathers" or the kind of dark comedies like "Very Bad Things"... it was a Saturday Night Live alum movie gone wild.

These are the last 7 movies I've watched, and their 5-star ratings:

There Is No "I" In Threesome - ⭐️⭐️½ (stupid twist at the end)
Godzilla (2014) - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Kong: Skull Island - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½

Godzilla: King of all Monsters - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Godzilla vs. Kong - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Mummy - ⭐️⭐️⭐️½ (it was a fun romp, but everything was a bit too convenient with Weicz's character just knowing everything off the cuff)

The Mummy Returns - ⭐️⭐️½ (The Rock's Scorpion king had my LOL'ing; it's so bad)

Funny Games (2007)

This is a shot for shot remake of the 1997 film directed by Austrian, Michael Haneke. With a cast featuring Naomi Watts, Tim Roth, Michael Pitt, and Brady Corbet, it had pretty big names for a horror film.

This movie is a mix of psychological thriller, horror and something else I'm having a hard time identifying. The movie breaks the thrid wall with the main character talking down to the audience. Without giving too much away, they also do a couple of other film tricks that let you know you're watching a movie.

Rather odd/dark but it was different and I've not seen a movie like it. The director's statement was that this film was "a reflection and criticism of violence used in media" but I missed that completely. While the violence in the film is brutal, it's never shown while it's happening...just the aftermath.

5 out of 5 stars. I rarely rate films this highly, but it completely mesmerized me. While I tend to like nature films, this one rises well above the norm with an intriguing and natrual story arc. Oh, and the featured octupus was extroadinary to follow for a year.

Mandy (2018)

One part animation, one part Evil Dead, 3 parts acid trip with another part fairy tale. An amazing performance by Nicholas Cage, which are words I've never typed before. The violence is intense to the point of comedy at points and has a very 80s John Carpenter vibe (it's also set in 1983).

The color grading, music and every detailed shot were so stylized and intense, I'll have to watch it again. Overall just really good art and it kept my interest for 2 hours. Enjoy some crazy and artistic style with my art film entertainment...these are what made this a great movie.

Watching Mortal Kombat on HBO Max.It's SO terrible. The dialog is corny, the storyline is undeveloped. The CGI is good, but everyone’s a little too adaptive to a supernatural situation. No disbelief, just “Oh, ok. You can shoot fire, cool. Wanna hang out?” Main dude looks like Asian Adam Scott. The mouthy Scottish guy just seems annoying, isn't as funny as he's meant to be.

The people doing the fighting have worked out to the Nth degree. Their bodies are amazing.

In general, thank God I'm using someone else's HBO Max and not paying for this shit.

I'll give it props for music, CGI, and fight scenes. The rest is just b-list.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

No, but I've briefly heard about it somewhere. I forget. I'll look into it. I gotta get a few movies in before my new batch of shows start.

I liked King of the Monsters slightly better than Godzilla vs Kong, mostly because of King Ghodorah. But Mecha-Godzilla was totally badass.

WB fucked up the DCEU, but they did Toho's Big Five (Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, King Ghidorah, Mecha-Godzilla) justice.

Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936)

Running through some Frank Capra films I've missed and this movie was a great place to start. While it's from a different time, the story and the message are timeless. If you can get past the 1936-ishness and the way people talk - both interesting to me - this movie is a must see.

Frank won an Academy Award for this film and by the end of this, it's clear why. Not familiar with most of the actors except for the star, Gary Cooper who was great. Jean Arthur was the co-star and was really good too.

Frank Capra was one of the most influential directors during the 1930s, winning three Academy Awards for Best Director from six nominations, along with three other Oscar wins from nine nominations. His movies typically have a moral/do-the-right-thing message and this was no different and just as relevant as it was in 1936.
