Probably one of the most famous ones of all time is "The last Picture Show." Oddly enough the film is full of stars (they just haven't become one yet). Cloris Leachman becomes a star because of her performance in the movie.

Omar Sharif was a big star.

I do love that movie.

I suppose it depends on your definition of "stars". I've seen a bunch of great Asian movies that starred actors who are virtually unknown outside of Asia. Unless you are referring to actors who were unknown to the individual, the question doesn't really make sense because generally speaking, it's unlikely you'll see a movie with actors who are completely unknown to EVERYONE. The Blair Witch Project, maybe? I don't particularly like it but a lot of people do.

Like I said, it all depends on definition of "star". 2001 A Space Odyssey had a few well known actors but none that could be considered a star.

I'm just taking it to mean if there are any big names in the movie even those in their perspective countries. I thought of Misery but it has Lauren Bacall in a supporting role. What's good? Award-winning? Critically acclaimed? Personally liked?

Fruitvale Station

No one knew who Michael B Jordan was at that time.

I sure as hell didn't recognize the rest of the cast either.

Octavia Spencer was in it but even then I didn't recognize her as

a household name.

Michael B Jordan was, is and always will be Wallace from The Wire to me. Every time I see him in anything I just imagine D'Angelo Barksdale shouting "Hey String, where the boy at?".

Well Misery also has Kathy Bates and James Caan so that immediately disqualifies it, I would think.

2001 A Space Odyssey has no big, well known movie stars and is a critically acclaimed classic. Blair Witch Project is liked in some circles. The first Saw movie had Westley from The Princess Bride in it but he's hardly what you'd call a movie star.

Jordan has been acting since he was a kid, he was the "star" of the movie.

From what I understand Misery was Kathy's 1st movie. She didn't do tv so. Lauren Bacall was who I thought of 1st so I felt no need to go further. Obviously it's not what is meant. Oh well. On to the next.

Well when you are young and you watch a movie you don't know who the cast are. Never knew who the hell Harrison Ford was whan I watched some movie called Star Wars back in 1977

Nope you are saying that. The lady looks like Angela Bassett IMO and looks nothing like Janet Jackson

That's Abbey Lincoln, who is a jazz singer. I don't think she looks like Angela, but I think Fayette from The Three Degrees does.

Well not major blockbusters since those require promotion and promotion requires spending lots of money and no company is going to spend like that without assuring a healthy draw. So a movie with no known reliable names would need to win a host of awards 1st to get a big burst of interest and there are quite a few of those over the years. Others require word of mouth and their numbers trickle in over a long period of time. They can still make a healthy profit it just takes longer. Like albums.

I'm guessing most of the films I watch would qualify as a "bunch of unknowns" for you. I mean … I don't know how many British films from the 1930s and 1940s you've watched, but that's where I spend a lot of my time.

.....I really like that film....could watch it over and over again, and sometimes I do...mostly late at night...perfect movie to watch at night.....and that main actor Bruno Lawrence is really good...very unusual character when you think of today´s typical Hollywood types....balding, middle aged dude but highly interesting character....so much better than some generic handsome hero dude...and I think it kinda put NZ on the map as far as movies are concerned...I also like Peter Jackson´s early movies a lot...NZ is a very interesting place I think...so far away...so remote......and yet familiar...

Quiet Earth is a great sci-fi flic..
