The Bachelor Colton Underwood comes out

Today on Good Morning America, former lead on The Bachelor Colton Underwood came out as gay. He goes in depth about coming to terms this past year with being gay.

He also made mention that when he got the call to be on The Bachelor, he thanked God for finally making him straight. Underwood would go on to be in a year+ relationship with someone from the show. He talked about how his Catholic upbringing taught him to hate himself. I can relate.

One thing that stuck out was him telling his father. His father said, "I wish you'd have told me sooner. What can I do to help?" This is something I'll never hear from my father; the same who once asked me, "are you a faggot?" while in my house. My uncle (his brother) said, "those people are dangerous." My brother once asked me, "how can you find love in a hairy ass?" All my church friends were constantly telling me how I needed to change, etc. It made me hate myself. I was scared to even walk by another guy thinking God was going to kill me on the spot.

Colton came out in an era that is way more accepting then when I was his age or younger. I suppose it's our responsibility, as people in the LGBTQ community and those that have LGBTQ friends and family, to make it easier for those coming out to have an easier time of it.

I never had a "coming out", so to speak. For as long as I can remember, I've been bisexual. In fact, for a long time I just assumed I was a lesbian. I was never attracted to boys when I was younger. I had 2 girlfriends before I had my first boyfriend. My mother was always very religious (when it suited her). She used to give me a hard time about dating other girls but it never bothered me too much. Her best friend, a man I call my uncle, is a catholic priest and he always stuck up for me. I mean, he would joke that I'm going to hell but that's all it was. Jokes. In truth, he doesn't really care about people's sexuality. My older sister thought I was weird. She still does, in fact. And my brother used to be embarrassed but he's grown up now.

Anyway, the point of me telling you this is that even though I had it relatively easy, it breaks my heart to hear stories like yours. Thankfully the world has moved on from the worst of it and being gay or whatever is seen as a normal way if life for the most part. Unfortunately there will always be ignorant arseholes who are either taking their own insecurities on those they perceive to be different or are just plain stupid. But the more people like this Colton Underwood guy who share their stories the better.
