What a character. Viola Davis was probably in just a third of the movie, but she was mesermizing in every scene she was in. IN addition to Ma, the film focued on how Black people navigated racism in the 1920s.

3.25 stars out of 4.

Promising Young Woman (2020)

A young woman, traumatized by a tragic event in her past, seeks out vengeance against those who crossed her path.

Fennell's unsettling film has a powerful, provocative message. Its core strength and its biggest flaw is that it is as comedic as it is dramatic. I felt like it teetered on the edge of collapse in the final act, but it stuck the landing in a pretty satisfying way. But this movie doesn't work without Carey Mulligan, who carries and balances this film about common trauma inflicted by men and women, on women. Shout out to Molly Shannon and LaVerne Cox for their turns as well.

That was a strange film almost a throwback to something set in a stylized theatrical reality like "Heathers" or the kind of dark comedies like "Very Bad Things"... it was a Saturday Night Live alum movie gone wild.

These are the last 7 movies I've watched, and their 5-star ratings:

There Is No "I" In Threesome - ⭐️⭐️½ (stupid twist at the end)
Godzilla (2014) - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Kong: Skull Island - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½

Godzilla: King of all Monsters - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Godzilla vs. Kong - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Mummy - ⭐️⭐️⭐️½ (it was a fun romp, but everything was a bit too convenient with Weicz's character just knowing everything off the cuff)

The Mummy Returns - ⭐️⭐️½ (The Rock's Scorpion king had my LOL'ing; it's so bad)

Funny Games (2007)

This is a shot for shot remake of the 1997 film directed by Austrian, Michael Haneke. With a cast featuring Naomi Watts, Tim Roth, Michael Pitt, and Brady Corbet, it had pretty big names for a horror film.

This movie is a mix of psychological thriller, horror and something else I'm having a hard time identifying. The movie breaks the thrid wall with the main character talking down to the audience. Without giving too much away, they also do a couple of other film tricks that let you know you're watching a movie.

Rather odd/dark but it was different and I've not seen a movie like it. The director's statement was that this film was "a reflection and criticism of violence used in media" but I missed that completely. While the violence in the film is brutal, it's never shown while it's happening...just the aftermath.

5 out of 5 stars. I rarely rate films this highly, but it completely mesmerized me. While I tend to like nature films, this one rises well above the norm with an intriguing and natrual story arc. Oh, and the featured octupus was extroadinary to follow for a year.
