Any luck with Covid denying/anti vax friends or family?

Just wondering if any of you have had any luck managing to talk deniers and anti vax acquaintances round?

How did you do it? Fortunately I have none (that I know of) but if I find one, I’m curious as how to handle it.

An acquaintance who’s kind of a clown believes in conspiracy theories about covid and was spewing bullshit online and on a WhatsApp group I’m no longer on, cause of stupid people like him. I don’t know how his fiancé who’s a psychologist could put up with him

Another acquaintance is against the vaccine and language around refusal. He also prefers trump over Biden and I wish I could challenge him, but don’t want him to hold anything against me cause he has some of my demos and was helping me out with them and was so nice about it. He’s also had a really tough life and things are looking up for him, so I try to value the positives and not judge him cause he’s compassionate, just disappointed in systems out there, which is probably where his line of thinking comes from

I’m not super close to them so I don’t feel very bothered by it, but if it were someone in my bubble, it would bother me if they felt this way

Luckily for me, I don't know anyone that stupid. But for argument's sake, if I do come across a friend or family member who believes covid is a hoax or that vaccines are bad, then I don't think there is a way of talking those people around and making them see sense. If they're already stupid enough to believe that in the first place then they're a lost cause. When you're dealing with that level of idiocy, you might as well be talking to the wall.

I think if it was someone I genuinely cared for, I’d try to educate them. Anyone less, and I’d just cease having anything to do with them. Delete and block.

That seems rather extreme. Either that, or you're looking for excuses to jettison a few people and this is as good a reason as any.

Well, the off-putting fact is that noone can choose from which manufacturer.

They are all a bit different, so it worries people.

It boils down to:

Do you want the vaccine or not?

No, you may not pick your favorite.

No, not at all. Conspiracy theorists are not people I want in my life. That’s all.
If you deny Covid exists despite all the evidence, that’s a deal breaker.

Okay, well … I don't know anyone who denies that COVID exists. I do know people who question how serious a threat it is to the general population. And given all the contradictory and and misleading information out there - especially in the early days and given by very high-ranking individuals like St. Fauci, himself - the fault isn't entirely theirs.

Nor do I think any one who has questions is automatically a conspiracy theorist. I like to try to understand why people believe what they believe - rather than just slapping a label on them because I don't agree with them. shrug

I mean I was pretty specific in referring to those who deny covid wasn’t I?
If you want to strawman me to suggest I was saying I would kick to the curb anyone who “has questions” then I don’t need to defend words that you’ve put into my mouth now do I!

By the way, same goes for Q Anon types. In the bin.

Okay, so ... you weren't really sincere about "being curious as how to handle it," were you? Since you a) have admitted you don't know anyone who fits your description and b) have already decided to "bin" them, if and when you do find them.

No real point to this thread then, is there? lock

Perhaps you’ve not understood.

Close friends and close family versus more casual acquaintances.

The former warrants effort. The latter get the bin.

Is that clearer now?

I don't know anyone but now that you asked I need to check in with my daughter, she went through an anti-vax phase for a minute. She tends to do stuff like that, we knock heads a lot. Left a lot of small pox pix around. That's when I realized she never grew up around anyone who got chicken pox, measles or mumps. It was standard when I grew up. As a kid I never could figure out why everybody got them except me. Dad didn't play I got all available vaccines. He saw enough crap overseas. As an adult now I'm quite pro vaccine since I can see with my own eyes the difference a generational change can make.
Late for my flu shot though.

Do check in with her and good luck if you need to help her make the right choice.

I had assumed she was in for the vaccine but it doesn't hurt to verify.

I feel that those who don't want the vaccine, good! It leaves more for those who do.

I've got both doses of mine and feel grateful to get it.

Congrats! I'm on a list (I work in higher education, so got registered that way), but heaven only knows when they'll have a vaccine for me. I'm hoping by my birthday. pray

Thanks. Right now, I'm just happy that my sweetie, who has multiple comorbidities, is fully vaccinated. And my 84-year-old mom is getting her second dose today.

I feel like I'm healthy enough to weather COVID, were I to come down with it. But I was so worried about them getting it - or me giving it to them. Knowing they're as protected as they can be is a big load off my mind.

I have a friend who originally didn't want the vaccine. I don't know if me talking to her about it had any effect but she changed her mind and she actually ended up being the first person I know to get the vaccine. I think she was just tired of sitting at home and going to the grocery store at 7am in the morning. biggrin

The fact that people think that this is a political issue is a HUGE part of
the problem. It’s a public health issue and you can’t get anymore
general than that. Don’t add to the issue by trying to make Covid response a political position. wink

why i've seen things put in pnr that boldly stated

it wasn't political or religious...

i THOUGHT if one person decided it was political,

them sayin the word political made it political...

to some this is political as it is a money maker

controlled by this gov...

me...

it's not political

i was sick 55 out of 90 days the last time i took

a suggested shot...

i took it to avoid catchin anything while recoverin from

an operation...

it wasn't mandated or forced on me

but it was a suggestion from a doctor...

doctors use to be about makin folks healthy...

if folks think this is still their intent and they want people

healthy, they really need to work on their standards...

i once had a doc that came out in snowstorms to

make sure i was safe...

medicine is money and a healthy people kills that...

i don't have a dog in the fight...

i wear a mask because i don't want anybodies

sickness, but then too...

i don't like people and don't really have to worry

about them not givin a fukkk about anyone's health but theirs...

i take care of me for me...

if i was sick i'd do all i could to get better and not make anybodt else sick

because of me...

you folks talkin about deniers and the such...

those are the ones who make this political...

folks who feel like they above wearin masks make it political...

yo gov makes it political and the fact that there hasn't been a commercial

about cold or flu medicines make it kinda political as i'm sure

folks didn't just give up their adverts on their own...

sooooooooooooooo moderator...

it kinda seems obvious why some would think this a pnr thread...

Good luck trying to convince someone to allow themselves to be experimented on with an unproven vaccine that uses unproven technology for a virus that has a 99.9% survival rate when the officials state that even after getting the vaccine we will still have to isolate, mask, social distance, avoid get togethers with family & friends and continue to endure lockdowns. What's the upside again?

That’s good to hear. I’m sure that you made a difference. Some people can’t be helped but as long as enough do their bit, the 5% for whom the vaccine is ineffective on AND the idiots who can’t understand it’s value will all be protected by herd immunity. did anybody get the news about dude who somehow

was given the civic duty of passin out the vaccines

but got busted givin em out to friends and family...

or the one where one of the deniers in charge

unstored the vaccines for a few days before he

released em on the public???

you people really comfortable gettin medicated by folks

that still feel like a election was stolen???

you comfortable listenin to deranged people plannin

to take over the country OR is that a conspiracy also???

YES!!! there is a sickness goin around

it's been goin around for years and bein weaponized

for profit...

it's not the vaccine folks should be worried about...

it's all the different hands they have to go through...
