Good luck trying to convince someone to allow themselves to be experimented on with an unproven vaccine that uses unproven technology for a virus that has a 99.9% survival rate when the officials state that even after getting the vaccine we will still have to isolate, mask, social distance, avoid get togethers with family & friends and continue to endure lockdowns. What's the upside again?

It doesn't have a 99.9% survival rate. If it did there wouldn't be 500,000 + dead in the US alone.

For it being an 'unproven' vaccine, the numbers are sure going down and that's because of the vaccine.

By all means, allow yourself to be a test subject, nobody is trying to talk you out of it.
Also, feel free to wear as many masks as you can wrap around your head, never congregate in large groups again and don't leave your home if it makes you feel better.

You do what you believe is best for you, I'll do the same for myself.

The same argues about every single vaccine under the sun. Nothing is 100% and all perfect with zero side affects to anyone. This is still planet earth. The sun gives you cancer it must need to be eliminated kind of reasoning. Given the track record these arguments are getting sillier and sillier.

My body, my choice.

Fauci says that even if EVERYBODY vaccinates, we still have to continue double masking, social distancing and limitations on gatherings. So I ask again, what's the upside?

Same here. Even though I'm 60, I figure all the weight-training I've done all these years would help me weather COVID too. It did for my brother, who's three years younger. I have concerns about this vaccine, so I'll pass.

For what it's worth, my neighbour's nephew was 17, very fit and active with zero previous health issues. He got covid and died. My father in law and mother in law are both in their 60s and got it at the same time. Both are the picture of health. She experienced very mild symptoms but he's still in hospital on a ventilator. He's expected to make a full recovery but it still goes to show how unpredictable covid is.

Fortunately most cases have been the milder version of the disease which young, healthy people can recover from but there are other strains that will kill you no matter how healthy you are.

No. My grandma got her first vaccine a few weeks ago, her next one is due tomorrow. One of my cousins is totally into cosniracy theories, he doesn't even react when I give him articles to read that would debunk his nonesense. The day before my grandma got her first vaccine, he called his mum because he was so worried about grandma getting vaxxed. I'm sure he would've talked her out of it if he would've been the one driving her there. So glad he didn't. The best part about all of it is that my grandma is as healthy as always and I'm sure she'll be after the last dose lol He's shitting his pants over nothing.

Just so no one misunderstands: I have every intention of getting the vaccine the second I am notified that it's available for me. As I mentioned, I work in higher ed - so I am already on a list and am confident it'll be coming before too long.

Hell, even though we're been masking for a almost a year, I still got a flu shot last fall. (And have every year for almost 30 years - even though they have a lower efficacy than any of the COVID vaccines.)

I had a Type A flu in the early 90s that convinced me to do everything I could to never get anything like that again. I've still had the flu a couple times since I started getting the vaccine, but it was always in years where they came right out and said they'd guessed wrong on the dominant strains for that year. And even then, I didn't get nearly as sick as I would have without getting the vaccine, at all.

Oh – and I'm getting the J & J COVID vaccine on Thursday! dancing jig

I'd have to have it to spread it and I'd have to be many people instead of one person to be a super spreader. But nice try anyway.

Funny how they called every lockdown protest, Trump rally and the Superbowl super spreader events but there was never a "super" increase in cases tied to any of those things. Oh, and BLM protests were never called super spreader events because covid is political evidently.

I bet you wear 2 masks in your car alone.

When I see people wearing masks in their cars by themselves or outside far away from any other people I assume these people aren't capable of critical thinking. Oh but wait, critical thinking is bad because it leads to extremism. Sorry, forgot. lol

Critical thinking is sadly under utilised.

I thought exactly that when you asserted that only 1 in a 1000 people with Covid will die from it when you live in a country of 320 million that’s already had over half a million deaths. I mean if basic maths is too hard, what change for actual critical thinking?

Per the CDC:

COVID-19 Survival Rates

  • Age 0-19: 99.997%
  • Age 20-49: 99.98%
  • Age 50-69: 99.5%
  • Age 70+: 94.6%

From data found here:

We're a year in and I still only know 3 people that tested positive, only one of them got sick, no one I know has been hospitalized or died. I have a very large family spread all over the country.

And just for fun, here's an editorial from The New York Times explaining why critical thinking is bad:

LOL

I chose the year before covid was even heard of to check the stats of the next highest thing equivalent to covid which is cold than flu. Desths by cold are miniscule if at all. So there's flu. Let's just say they don't even rank at a 20th (0.05) of the numbers covid did even with covid low death percentages. I can't ignore those on the front lines. The people pulling round the clock shifts in ICUs. They're not talking for shits and giggles. ICUs were overwhelmed in some cases which is unheard of. The movies play on history, pandemics aren't some new 21st century invention unlike 20th century lasers, they are a part of human history like starvation. It's not rocket science to estimate the what ifs in a movie. Just read a history book or pay attention to those areas of the world that don't have our resources, people are people all over the world. There are places in the world that refuse the smallpox vaccinations because of very similar theories you hear right here on American soil. It's uncanny when you hear them. The truth is we have little to no history in this generation dealing with pandemics BECAUSE we have some damned good systems in place that a lot of dedicated people stay on top of. Plain and simple.

Got my math wrong. Fixed it.

"PAY NO MIND TO THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN!!!" wizard of oz

Fixed it.

Well said. Though I didn’t read what you were replying to. Makes my head hurt. But I got the gist from your reply.
If the milk turns out to be sour, I aint the kinda pussy to drink it!
