Yeah, KoolEaze, people leaving here and going to FB is bad - how did you know all that stuff about mods playing games with orgers and stuff? I've been here more than a DECADE and I don't even KNOW who's coming and going..... Me, I'm trying my *hardest* to stay webLESS as much as possible these days - these things are rewiring our BRAINS,...but actually, it's not the net that's the problem, it's the interfaces, the way these things have been designed - after all this time I don't know what any of you look like, except RodeoSchro and KingBAD (and that too I have only their word for it!), or even who's a man and who's a woman! No, this is Not Good. As I already mentioned elsewhere here, let's switch to VIDEO conferencing, now that the technology is here, maybe that's better - www.jitsi.org

1. Yes, animosities and arguments between orgers but also , and mainly, between former orgers and the mods. I never had an issue with any of the mods and I´ve been here since day one but I understand why many people left the org, and they personally told me why, and it´s because of the very reasons I mentioned above.

2. Neglect-----> I really like Ben and I am eternally thankful that he created this site, and I´ve met him a long time ago and he´s the nicest guy you could imagine, but I´m not really sure if he cares about prince.org these days. But I´m not saying it´s just him, I mean neglect in general...some mods played power games with certain orgers, some orgers were disrespectful to mods and vice versa....I´m not really taking sides but it´s frustrating to see this place going downhill. I still like it though and as you can see I´m still here. Don´t feel like going into details because then I´d be going off topic and would risk that this thread ends up in the org´s site discussion forum. This would be unfair to the OP.

3. Among those who left it seems to be pretty much general consensus that this place sucks, at least that´s what many of them say on FB but I think it depends on what you make of this place. The same topics they discuss on FB they used to discuss here, too, but that was a long time ago.

.

I still get exactly what I want from this place, which is discussing anything Prince related and other musicians and their music, plus a little bit of info on associated artists, and every now and then I check out the P&R forum, too, and I get along with most folks here. Those I don´t like, I simply ignore.

What I liked most about the old org were the invasions. It was much more of a community back then where people were willing to plan holidays together to meet each other in person in cities around the world--like the time I met you in Amsterdam. smile

I don't know if larger gatherings are also arranged on Facebook since I don't have an account there either.

Yes, that invasion was really fun. And as unbelievable as it sounds, I didn´t even smoke weed despite all the coffeeshops on every corner. lol

It was a great meeting and I wish we could do that again one day. These days, with the pandemic, it´s like a whole different universe and even the thought of another meeting seems so far away. I would really love to do that again, and I think Amsterdam was the perfect place for that meeting and if we should ever do that again, it should be in Amsterdam.

Back in the day it was far more personal here, people posted more pictures , some half naked, people used to "photowhore", many people met and fell in love and got married or became close friends in real life. It was also easier to post pictures before Photobucket changed, Youtube links worked, and the lack of censorship made the org far more anarchistic than what you see today.

But keep in mind that this was more than a decade ago and people were more careless and the internet less dangerous than it is today.

Good times.

I miss a lot of those old school orgers. Some I still see on Facebook and real life, some are still on the org (and on Facebook), many have become dear friends of mine and I couldn´t imagine life without them even if some of them are far away and we have to cross continents to meet, and some disappeared for good. You´re from India, right? I think we had an orger who was also from India that I really liked around here but he´s gone, too.

Some come back with different names and you can tell by their names that it´s them, but sometimes they come back and you don´t even notice....which can be funny sometimes because you treat them differently, maybe argue with them, not knowing that it´s an orger you used to be friends with. lol

I see RodeoSchro on FB very often.

Yeah the org went through a lot of changes but FB kickstarted the great migration. I guess it offered more freedom in posting. Then it trickled from there.

I understand your point but I think when you really think about it it just boils down to practicality and a little bit of laziness. Facebook lets you check your news ,check hobby related snippets and gives you an update on what your friends are doing because you don´t have to go to different forums for all those things but the overall spectrum of these things is actually very limited on Facebook, the proper pages for those interests go far deeper, and the freedom on Facebook is no longer what it used to be. They censor so much stuff there, people get banned for ridiculous reasons or sometimes no reason at all, no warning, no nothing, so I think that´s why FB is faced with the fact of losing members, too.

I understand the moderators here and why they have to censor certain things but I think all in all the org is much better as far as freedom is concerned.

Another thing is that I don´t really feel "free" on Facebook because I know that all my socalled FB friends....colleagues, former schoolmates, relatives, etc. can see what I post , can read my comments etc. , which feels a bit awkward at times so I am much more hesitant these days.

On the org, I don´t have to worry about how my uncle or aunt feels while I´m discussing Prince´s seethrought lace pants, his jizz squirting guitar, or some of the more risqué topics we discuss here.

lol

I really can't say I never got there. I made an account and that's as far as I've ever gotten. But if I were to guess when things are new it offered what hadn't been available before even with MySpace. I'm sure as time went on the rules changed. I just saw the shift happen here as disputes happened people felt they could have greater control over who they encountered and off they went. For others it seemed they had a new tool to delve further into whatever other avenues interested them. I do feel you about being able to indulge without every single family and friend knowing the details. I know I can live without the earful of opinions.

I haven't been on there in over a year and a half. Even that time was brief. I don't do Twitter or Instagram either. I'm usually too busy to have an online presence. As far as Facebook goes I don't need it. I talk to the people I need to. The others I can get secondhand updates about... or not.

Yep. It's where most of the Orgers went and remained.

I know what you mean. I´m still on both platforms, p.org and FB but I hate to discuss Prince stuff on FB especially since my FB friends list is growing longer and longer and many Prince groups on FB are open groups and I just don´t want all my relatives, colleagues, former classmates etc. etc. see me discussing Prince solos or aftershows or bandmembers and whatnot on Facebook for everybody to see.

Not that there´s anything wrong with discussing Prince but I just find it a bit odd that every friend , aunt, uncle or colleague can see me discuss song lyrics or other details there.

I have to say that the longer I´m on FB ,the more careful I´ve become . The FB personality I had years ago is no longer the one I share these days simply because there are too many people there who don´t have to see my weirder humorous sides, or food tastes, music tastes etc. etc.

It didn´t really bother me in the first years but these days I think twice about liking or commenting something, knowing that a bunch of people will be able to see it.

.

As far as orgers are concerned....if they still feel like discussing Prince, I´d rather see them come back and discuss the same things here on the org instead of spreading those discussions onto a dozen Prince pages on Facebook, but that is up to them and I´m not judging, just saying that I´d love to see that activity here on the org and not on FB.

I love the relative privacy and anonymity and also the fond memories here on the org.

And not just here but forums in general....so much better than FB.

I can tell that there still seems to be an interest in discussing all things Prince, or Music:NonPrince, or even General Discussions and P&R but it´s kind of sad that mismanagement , neglect and mutual animosities have done so much harm to this wonderful forum.

We arrange the meet ups on facebook now. Of course not during a pandemic (there was talk of a June 2021 meet up in the twin cities.) I assume that will be pushed back a year?

That´s a smart decision. I should have followed that rule right from the beginning but there are some that I don´t mind having on my FB friends list.

So how do you tell family and colleagues that you don´t want to be FB friends with them if they send you a friend request? Or do you use a screenname there?

The longer I´m on FB, the more boring my FB personality has become. lol

Mostly because I have to be extra careful these days.

I have a addicted personality sometimes but I believe I can fight the urge.Alkost everyone I know is on there 24/7,I do not want to be like that.

Zuckerberg has No Clue about HUMAN behaviour, how could he construct a place where us human beings can be social?? I can think of a ton of things that HUMAN BEINGS would want from a "'site" like this, I don't think FB does any of those things. Things that are fundamental to the human condition, and our place in society. What FB is, is a very well-targeted marketing machine, you can see stuff you want to BUY real great - now if you KNOW that, then what are you Doing There??

I use FB but really strongly prefer forums like this. On FB and other social media formats, you get lost in thousands of posts and I really don't have the time or interest to read that many posts.

Oh there are MANY uses for Facebook that are positive.

I have a page for my PTA (the school parent teacher association) where we post events and notifications for parents and students.
I have a page for my community non-profit for communicating with people in the community.
I personally have "friended" distant relatives in Honduras and elsewhere whom I would otherwise only know by name but now we share photos and stories.
I also keep in touch with old school classmates and childhood friends.

Yes it can be addictive, and yes the political group posts make my blood boil, but in general it is very useful.

Of all my friends on Facebook, I find your Facebook presence and activities by far the most relaxed, most normal, most perfect and most unusual, if that makes sense. I always enjoy your beautiful pictures, the family activities, the family reunion pictures, the cultural and geographic lessons I get from the places you visit and photograph and talk about, or the food, or special places in NYC.

No arguments, no extremism, no badmouthing, no drama.

Perfect example of why I´m still on Facebook, even though I´m not as active as I used to be because the more friends I have there, the more I have to censor myself because there are more and more people that force me to "tame" myself, but that´s a whole different topic.

In a nutshell, I really like your Facebook presence. wink
