Simple. Cocoa powder vs solid chocolate. Hot chocolate is richer.

During the year I would drink hot cocoa usually via box mix. This time of year I'd put effort into a really rich decedent hot chocolate. Probably limited to just 2 because it can get ridiculous.

Hot cocoa is made from cocoa powder. Hot chocolate is a liquid made from cocoa beans. Even though the terms are used interchangeably by many chocoholics, the two hot beverages are not the same. While you can still get hot chocolate, at home even the most prestigious chocolate gourmet is likely sipping hot cocoa.

Thanks for the explanation! I just noticed we were gifted early with hot cocoa, so looking forward to trying that soon!

slam

This confirmes that I've been raised in poverty and ignorance because I had no idea people made cocoa with actual solid chocolate.

As fancy as I've ever been was adding cream to my hot powdered garbage.

Now I'm making plans for variations with this new knowledge that will include some Baileys and/or peppermint for Christmas.

Thanks for the enlightenment, I'm serious. It's the little things...

If I can find the right silcon molds, I'm making hot chocolate bombs. Went to Michael's but line was wrapped around the building.
