it's nice... you can attach your fisher price record player and make mp3s from vinyl.

I got a Speak And Spell that Imma use to help with downloads etc
actually, the Speak & Spell is the keyboard. makes for nice voice recognition software.

nod Tech support was/is horrible (what I have experienced), they would mess up everything when ever I upgraded. Although... my PC has been great, have had it for five years just about. :students: sheep, I tell you.big grin wink

Home made... I always build em myself. I wouldn't say I actually save much money doing that, but at least I get to choose all decent components etc. Nice enough spec tho:

- Coolermaster ATX aluminium case
- 512mb DDR RAM PC2700
- Pentium IV 2.53ghz
- Asus P4PE mobo
- Geforce 4 w/ 128MB vid card
- Nice big 19" Sun monitor
- various big hard drives and cards and stuff
- slot-feed Panasonic DVD ROM and a cheap LG CDRW

Put it together pretty cheaply actually. Probably cheaper than most off-the-shelf PCs.

And my laptop is a Sony Vaio piece of crap, an old Z600 TEK. Very slim and shiny, but it sucks. I'll never buy Vaio again...

You're a techno geek Ian, i can tell by the way you list your PC components. biggrin

It's a solid system btw...i'm building my own super computer right now as well.

Ooh...and i'm taking donations and trades for parts right now. nod

What do you need for your new PC? I have some spare bits from my old system that aren't being used but they might be a bit out of date for you.

Mine's a Hewlett-Packard. It's rather old (purchased January 2000), but it still meets my needs just fine. When I upgraded to Windows XP, I increased the memory from 64 MB to 256 MB, and I wiped the hard drive clean to get rid of all the pre-installed software that just takes up space and slows down the machine.

My wife also has an HP, and we've got them networked together and connected to a DSL line. We've also got an old Pentium Pro Compaq stored away in a closet, but I think something's wrong with it... otherwise I'd put it on our network and use it as a Web server.

Originally my plan was to build a computer myself, as Ian has done, when it comes time to get a new machine. But I think I'll probably wind up buying a laptop instead. I hate not having a computer with me when I travel, and it seems as if most hotels I stay in offer high-speed Internet access for free or a modest charge.

Mmmm lovely tiBook smile
My last Mac was a grape iMac DV. I rarely used it though, unfortunately most of my work requires me to be using Windows. Still I really should pick up a iBook one of the days, they are so cheap now.

Mac G4; but the previous series, not the silver one. Unfortunately with an older 15 inch screen= big bummer for lay-outs.

Heh... I'm still using the 15-inch Sony Trinitron monitor that I bought back in January 1996 for $500. (At the time I thought it was worth the cost... I remember seeing it in the computer store with all of their other monitors, and the Sony's picture was noticeably superior.)

I'm sure that today I could get something with the same or better picture quality and a larger screen for much less money, but since I'm used to working with a 15-inch screen, I don't have a burning desire to run out and buy a larger monitor. In fact, my next step will probably be to a smaller screen, since my plan is to get a laptop for my primary computer and keep my current machine for use as only a server.

Man they don't even make 15" CRT screens anymore razz You'd pick up a 19" CRT for feck-all nowadays, or a 15" LCD.

I'd like an LCD to save desk space but I need 19" viewable area... and that's expensive unfortunately.

I'm kinda similar to your approach... my big desktop PC only gets used as a server, or for gaming. I do everything else on my laptop, with a wireless network (ADSL shared wirlessly between my laptop, PC, Xbox etc).

Wireless kit so cheap nowadays.

For doing lay-out's, 17 inch is the minimum otherwise the text starts looking like grey barrs; So I still use the screen from my old performa 6400 duh
And since i'll be out of a job in a couple of days, it will have todo for a while. Soon i will have plenty of time to surf the org smile
