Fall Reading

For those of us that love to read, I wanted to start a new thread for the fall.

I just finished reading The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead. Wow, what a book!. Based on a true story of the Dozier school, a reform school in Florida that operated for 111 years and had it's history exposed by a universities investigation. It is the winner of the 2020 Pulizter Prize and I must say, it is well deserved. It's a tough, very emotion read, but I'm so glad I read it as it certainly is relevant today. The atrocities these boys suffered at the hands of the state and the school employees was devastating to read. It never ceases to amaze and anger me how so many people in authority can abuse their power and treat human beings so terrible. I highly recommend this book.

Story about a case worker who evaluates a house of four magical children including The son of Satan, Lucy. Surpisingly touching, non horrific story and I'd love to see Hulu or someone make a miniseries out of it.

I recommend reading my book on my life as a Prince fan...and the Org figures prominently in the plot!

I'm going back over my favorite authors again since it's been a while I've read their books. And I see Fledgling is always going to be the hardest book for me to stomach and she did it intentionally for a point, I believe, we'll never fully know but that's the kind of author she was, she always had a point to get across and it wasn't a typical commercial one. I believe it was an answer to one of my other favorite authors who I'll be going back over, some not all of her book interest me, I know there are parts of her writing that's difficult for me too just for different reasons. And I never finished the
ancient Rome series from another author so that's on the list. Then to move on to newer authors. Maybe stretch my horizons a tad.

Has anyone read Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garica? I have not read any of her books but they all get good reviews. Mexican Gothic is her most recent. I'm intrigued.

I've been researching this author and she has several books available. Never heard of her until now, but I will be checking out her work in the future. I'm always looking for new and interesting books to read. I have tons of books on my shelf waiting to be read, but when I do get around to Mexican Gothic, I will let you know.

One of my bookish friends is reading Moreno-Garcia's Gods of Jade and Shadow and raving about it, so we're planning to read Mexican Gothic together later in the fall.. I've seen some mixed reviews, (saying it's a bit slow to start), but I'm mostly optimistic

Right now, I'm reading Lovecraft Country as a compliment to watching the HBO show. I love that the book is slower and more detailed than the show (which I'm mostly enjoying too), so it's filling in some blanks for me.

Also, I'm slow reading this spooky-campy poetry and short story collection by Linda Addison called How to Recognize a Demon has Become Your Friend lol . That title drew me in, but I also love that the poems and stories are horror themed, but more fun than gruesome.

Oh and I started reading this graphic novel called Submerged from Vita Ayala.. It is a contemporary dark fantasy about a young woman searching the (creepier than usual) NYC subway for her abducted brother during a huge storm. Sounds like something I should love, but so far it's not holding my interest
If you will, so will I

lol I assume you're referring to Octavia Butler's Fledgling based on your signature.. I desperately want to read a book by her, and her major works come highly recommended, but the diehard vampire fam in me is most drawn to Fledgling . Is it bad or just not up to par with her other books?

Yes. I assumed I overreacted to the book. I didn't she puts it right in your face. I couldn't finish it. Just finished Kindred though, loved it better this time. On to Wild Seed and all the Patternmaster series. I loved how she wrote 2 series which were actually a single series. Wished they'd publish her notes on the 3rd parable book, I read a general synopsis of it and it was so dark and pessimistic. Love her.
