I've seen this Youtube video by MovieFlame - a video called "Why the Star Wars Prequels Aren't As Bad As Everyone Says (Video Essay)".

This person basically explains what makes the prequels "good" and how it expands the Star Wars Universe by reflecting on themes of history, mythology, religion and politics (whereas the Star Wars triology of 1977-1983 takes influences from related sci-fi/ action and adventure movies, serials and fairytales such as The Wizard Of Oz).

After watching this, I began to think: "Hey, this guy might be right". I'm guessing that the filmmakers wanted a certain theme for each set of films. The SW films made in the 2010s deal with morals/ what is right and wrong.

Now I'm watching some scenes from the prequels, I realise some scenes weren't that bad. The actors did what they were directed to do. I guess the overuse of CGI made some fans angry (George Lucas reportedly didn't like shooting on location as experienced from filming the original trilogy). I like Ewan McGregor's performance as Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Ian McDiarmid as Palpatine/ Darth Sidious - two actors who had the right mindframe and gave it what they could.

Although I still think the prequels would have benefited from better writing, it's a decent effort. I guess now there's nostalgia for the prequels, particularly among the very young fans who were kids in the early 2000s.

The prequels were flawed, but to me, it still felt like Star Wars. The sequels turned SW into Harry Potter.

I never dislike the SW Prequels

I understood when they started coming out not to compare them with IV V VI, because they would be harkening to a different time. That it would be the Republic, The Jedi Order in their 'glory' so to speak. Not a group of rebels running hiding and rag tag battles.

The only thing I really didn't like about I was Jar Jar being comedic, and I don't like kids so much especially lippy kids who seem to much like Johnny down the street. He talked to much.

Episode II, overall I enjoyed with no issues

And Episode III was magnificent

Of course I could add things I think could have improved the movies. There were deleted scenes I thought would have enhanced each.

I and II had their moments but were stilted.

III was a good film.

Ep I was a decent movie ruined by Jar Jar. That said, the movie works when "that thing" is not around. Of course nowhere near as good as SW'77 and TESB, but not the awful film many claim it to be. Quality compared to other franchises: Harry Potter, early films.

Ep II was a colossal disaster, one of the worst-looking big budget films of all time (blue screen-digital video from hell; atrocious dialogue and wooden acting, you'll see better acting in high-school. Quality compared to other franchises: Twilight.

Ep III tried to accomplish many things in a puzzingly tight running time (barely two hours-not counting the credits). It's the best of the prequels, but still not a great SW entry (good at best); still too much CGI/blue screen and Hayden Christensen didn't pull it off. Adam Driver is miles better than him. McDiarmid stole the show as Sidious staging a coup. Quality compared to other franchises: X-Men movies of the 2000s.

The Force Awakens and most of TROS are definitely better films than any of the prequels. And Rogue One was the best prequel, anyway, he.

Overall, I still think they are a really mixed bag ... terrible dialogue across all three ...

Epi.1 ... Jake Lloyd painful to watch, Jar Jar was awful, Mcgregor trying to do an Alec Guiness impression, dull script too concerned with political machinations, plot turns that made no sense (we had to have that pod race to get ship parts that Qui-Gon could have just nabbed).

Pod race was still exciting if needless, Liam Neeson was great, Darth Maul was a bad-ass, and Duel of the Fates was brilliant to watch and listen to.

Epi.2 ... Haydn was actually worse than Jake Lloyd, Anakin came across as creepy and whiney, the CGI was horrendous, political machinations plot still dragged.

Ian McDiarmid and Christopher Lee fantastic, Samuel L Jackson got to be a badass, got to see Yoda in action finally.

Epi.3 ... underrated ... great to see the original universe back on screen, Haydn actually improved though his character was still a dumbass, the Anakin v Obi Wan fight was brilliant and they finally let Mcgregor do some proper acting, Order 66 actually quite emotionally effecting.

They should have ditched half of the content from 1 and 2, and allowed the story in 3 to be told across a longer run time.
