JJ Abrams did a way better job with Star Wars than he did with Star Trek
whatttt???!! WHAAA???!!! Oh man... ^^this is the very reason I've avoided any STAR TREK movies since the cast of TNG stopped. You just can't have a "hip looking" cast and "pizzazz" and pretend it's STAR TREK. Who's going to listen to a 23 yr old captain?
Thanks for validating my fears, but... God.. if THESE are better... I can only imagine how bad THOSE are! ♫"Trollin, Trolling! We could have fun just trollin'!"♫ |

WHY would she say "Skywalker"?
Just seen it today myself. Really enjoyed it. I posted my feelings on it in the "last movie you watched" thread but just to reiterate a point I made there, Palpatine is a great villain. A purely evil bastard with zero redeeming qualities. My guess as to why she said her surname is Skywalker is that she obviously wants to cut all ties to Palpatine. Like, in real life, you don't see many people called Hitler anymore. So she was always likely to change her name. As for why she chose Skywalker, I'd say it's because Luke and Leia were the closest things she had to parents. Her only real family. Taking their names makes a lot of sense.
I can see the reasoning -- she saw them as surrogate parents, who similar to Rey, also had to grapple with the legacy of an infamous father. She also had the "dyad" connection with Ben, who (kinda sorta) "lives on" in her.
While the argument could be made that she should embrace her surname in honor of her noble parents, EmmaMcG is right. I guess it wouldn't matter how noble Hitler's relatives were, the name is tainted forever. Same with Palpatine, who destroyed entire worlds and terrorized the galaxy while managing to conceal his Sith identity for a long time.
I'd say that normally, concealing these kinds of things spells bad news in the Skywalker Sage sooner or later. But it's over, so it doesn't matter.
Right?

I heard a rumour that there is going to be a spin off TV show starring Rey on Disney Plus. So it may not be over just yet. Future movies would do well to ignore the entire Skywalker Saga and focus on events in other parts of the galaxy either in the distant future or distant past. |

I mostly agree with that. I'd love to see perhaps an animated (limited) series focusing on the years immediately after RoTJ. I'd trust Filoni inherently with that.
But I'd love to see different dynamics. Lucas created an entire universe which has been expanded well beyond the Skywalker Era. It's time they took full advantage of it.

the force can do many things only the 1001st generation found out, it can be used as an interstallar 3D Skype system, as an instant necklace delivery system, and force ghosts can catch objects
some consider those abilities to be unnatural
oh, and if Luke-ghost coud handle a lightsaber, why did he not join and help out in the showdown with Palpatine? scared? or did he need to get some power converters at Yoshi station?

Why not. It makes all sense. It wasn't a coincidence that Leis was enroute to Tattoine, where the droids would get in contact with Luke, And really. Being middle aged has nothing to do with the new movies being crap. Even with grown up eyes I can watch the OT and it makes sense for the most part. And I do like the prequels.
Sure. As long as you can suspend disbelief enough to accept that droids crash landing on a planet a little smaller in size to earth and they just happen to bump into the bloke they’re looking for the next day and then accept that Owen and Beru Lars who used to own C3PO (a protocol droid made by Anakin with a very unique personality for his kind) would have no recollection of it! The whole saga is full of holes if you go looking for them.
mind, in 1977 Obi was not yet watching over Luke, the droids could have been sold to another family and we would have never known the Skywalkers, but another teenage boy or girl called Smith, Miller, Huxtable or Whateva. not just Luke but also Smith could easily have been familiar with that Kenobi hermit and joined the adventure, as long as it's in that same area, and that can be explained by Leia heading to that region (not just planet) but getting caught in the last minute so that is still within the frame of acceptable coincidence you will have in most films
but Luke bumping into Yoda right away on Dagobah is NOT... that film is where the trouble started
if you look at SW'77 as a single film it flows okay, plot is still driven by random events more or less. but after that it get's condensated into a micro-universe where the whole galaxy is driven by a small group of folks all knowing each other since decades or even being related and shit
most "coincidences" and plotholes were created by the prequels though, in an idiotic attempt to link and connect everything. like hiding Luke with his real name with his uncle on Anakins home planet (though that problem was bascially already set up in Ep5 with "I am your father" and that was difficult to resolve in the prequels), or Anakin building C3PO and all that nonsense, and so much more, ahhh don't get me started!

It was between grandad and Rey, let's just assume he didn't want to interfere in a family feud. Plus, based on the last encounter he had with Sidious, maybe he didn't want that smoke. Literally.
Anyway . . . Yoda had the same ability. Presumably so does every Force Ghost, including Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon. They all stayed out of it, as they always have in the climactic duels (but Yoda and Obi-Wan almost did get involved in the Vader-Luke faceoff in Episode VI).

In The Last Jedi, Yoda struck Luke in the head with his cane, and rained down lightning to destroy the first temple.

IIRC, in early drafts of Return of the Jedi, Obi-Wan and Yoda were to appear as force ghosts to confront/taunt Palpatine and help Luke.

I don't know -- "canon" included a lot of the books and comics that were written in the pre-Disney era, and the Force Ghosts (IIRC) had some pretty immense powers. And Sidious did clone himself to keep himself alive after RoTJ and even made Luke his apprentice, compelling Leia to save him.

So, it made a billion, but net profit? 100m, 200m tops?
Joker and Jimanji were far better investments.
Will that have an effect on future Star Wars films? . |

We've had 5 SW films within less than 5 calendar years.
I think they'd be better served cultivating their small-screen corners of the SW universe, and even better served putting Star Wars savants like Dave Filoni in charge of those projects.
In light of the mixed reception for the last few films, they'll need to have some bright minds produce a compelling storyline for new films set outside the Skywalker Eras.
Or . . . a film or series of films focusing on Darth Vader's reign of terror would be incredible. His last scene in Rogue One was more compelling than anything else in the last 5 movies.

A film based on James Luceno's novel "Dark Lord - The Rise of Darth Vader" would be epic....but Disney would find a way to fuck it up. |

I don’t think that it’s a coincidence that the least divisive and most universally popular Disney Star Wars entries have been Rogue One and Mandalorian. Two stories free from the baggage of the past and the inevitable disappointment of old characters not being as cool as when they and we were younger. It’s like how your Dad is superman when you’re 8 but just a a flawed old man when you’re in your 40s.
These two were free to branch out but got to throw in some fan service crowd pleasers. Now that the Skywalker saga has been put to bed and will no longer weigh down Disney with pleasing us ageing and disillusioned fanboys, I think the future is bright. If the milk turns out to be sour, I aint the kinda pussy to drink it! |

This is the only Star Wars movie that I as an adult have not seen on opening weekend. And I have yet to see it. I'll eventually see it when it streams, but from all accounts it sounds as if it's been dumbed down to the level of the toxic fandom. Yes, the ones who put any of the prequels on their top ten lists.
