Advice needed from any East Coast Americans!

I'm coming to america on Sunday, and I need some help!

I arrive in New York on sunday for three days, and then I'm driving down to Orlando for a friends wedding the following Monday.

I have my hotel booked in New York, but as for the drive to Orlando, I have no solid plans yet. I got a million and one questions concerning the four nights I'm going to have on the road.

Can anyone help me!

Fron a tourist point of view, I'm thinking of the following route:

Night 1 = Atlantic City
Night 2 = Washington or the Hamptons
Night 3 = Myrtle Beach
Night 4 = Charleston

Then its the final drive to Orlando.

I may cut out Atlantic City, I'm not sure.

Can anyone help me with the following questions. I hope they don't sound stupid questions, but I want the view from people "in the know" rather than guide books.

1. Where are the best places to go out in Manhattan? (food, bars etc)
2. Is the subway safe out to Yankee stadium!? (I got tickets for Tues night)
3. How long would the drive be from NYC to Atlantic City?
4. How long would the drive be from NYC to Washington DC?
5. Is Washington a good place for a night out?
6. Are the Hamptons any good or have a believed the hype?
7. What section of Mrytle should I stay in for the bars and clubs?
8. Can you recommend anywhere on my journey I should visit?
9. Does any part of my journey seem too long for a days travel?

Please help! smile smile

1. go to the village vanguard in greenwich village. it's one of the oldest jazz clubs around, always a great experience. eat at mexicana mama 525 hudson street 212-924-4119. it's walking distance from the vanguard, it can't be beat.
2. i've never had a problem on the subways of new york, and yankee stadium is cool.

enjoy yourself.

I hope I'm not stating the obvious, but I assume Maxicana Mama is mexican food! I sure hope so. The mexican is crap in London, so I'm going to take you advice and go there. I don't think is that far from my hotel.

Cheers my friend!

i am ready to leave , but i would just advize u this way - cut out AC ... go straight to DC or ... hit baltimore (baltimore is only like an hr from DC ... )

People try to do sooo much ... I know i did when i was in europe the first time ... because of rain/weather/flightsickness, etc ... just slow down ...

AC is kinda boring and depressing , unless u know someone there ... i would skip it ... i am from kinda in-between philadelphia and baltimore ... and baltimore is always my fav trip ...

just my opinion ... if u want more addvice ... i can write more later ...

hey Squirrel:

I can help with part of your inquiry.

The drive from NYC to DC will be about 4 hours, maybe more, depending on the time of day (traffic).

I live in DC (& have for many years)
& while DC is no NEW YORK CITY
there are usually enough cool things to do & or see.. it depends on what you're interested in.

DC is definitely more interesting Friday & Saturday night!

If you want, org.note me & we can arrange to meet when you pass through the Nation's Capital. If you're passing through at a certain time, I can probably change my schedule around a little.

While in NYC.. DEFINITELY GO TO LITTLE ITALY.
& Times Square.

HAVE A GOOD & SAFE TRIP, SquirrelMeat!
I'll see you tonight..

i think baltimore is my fav place for a night out ... cause i am more familiar with it ... than say NYC ...

check out the inner harbor ...its a harbor that was famous for years ... there are alot of seedier places right near there - if u are into that ... also ... nice shops and bars there ...

fells point has a mixture of a lot of bars/clubs ... i especially like the jazz places ...

there is good food - good drink- and alot to see ... in my opinion ...what are u into!!?? what days are u coming in ... gonna be there .. etc!!??

my family just drove down to Florida from our place (north of baltimore) ... we did that in 2 days ... for your "planning" ... the charleston to orlando is the only "brutal part" ... in my opinion ... it may take u like 7-8 hrs ... just guessing ...

Really depends on what you like to eat. I would suggest sticking to Greenwich Village cuz there's so many bars and restaurants around there. Just walk everywhere between 8th street and Houston street, Avenue A to 7th avenue. Between these points you will find a lot of good shit. Then if you walk south of Houston street, you'll soon wind up in Chinatown if you choose.

2. Is the subway safe out to Yankee stadium!? (I got tickets for Tues night)

The subway is very safe. I take it at all hours of the night and have no problems. Besides, if there's a game going on then you'll be surrounded by mobs of baseball fans, so you'll definitely have no problems.

3. How long would the drive be from NYC to Atlantic City?

Maybe 3 hours.

4. How long would the drive be from NYC to Washington DC?

About 4 hours.

5. Is Washington a good place for a night out?

I haven't spent much time there, but there are a few good restaurants and bars.

6. Are the Hamptons any good or have a believed the hype?

The Hamptons are pretty cool, but only in nice warm weather. The beaches are good, and the night clubs are pretty descent. Only go there if you want to see stuff like this.

7. What section of Mrytle should I stay in for the bars and clubs?

?

8. Can you recommend anywhere on my journey I should visit?

Well you'll definitely have fun in NYC. Check the Village and to be touristy, you can hang in Times Square. Atlantic City is okay, but only if you're into gambling, clubs, and the beach. The boardwalk is kinda cool. DC is okay for some sight seeing and stuff. I'd say go straight down to Florida and enjoy yourself.

9. Does any part of my journey seem too long for a days travel?

You're definitely short on time with this trip, take a moment and think about what you really wanna see and do.

As a Londoner who spent one day & night in DC on a stopver on the way back from California, I would definitely recommend it. I actually found the Mall quite awe-inspiring.

Myrtle Beach is soo boring. I would recommend you driving another 3 hours to Savannah, Ga. Such good things there. Great clubs, wonderful shops, Tybee Island which is a great non-commercial area. Savannah also has some of the most wonderful resturants, Lady & Sons, Olympia Cafe, and the River Front has wonderful street musicians & art shows. Tybee Island is wonderful.

I have one thing to say to you for the drive down to Orlando (especially when you approach the Carolinas)...say 'Hi' to PEDRO for me!

No need to elaborate...you'll know what I mean when you get there.

I'm from NYC and I totally agree with EvilWhiteMale about going to the Village for a good place to eat. The Subways are great. The trains that go to Yankee Stadium are the B, D and 4 trains. The B & D goes down 6th Ave (west side of Manhattan) and the 4 goes down Lexington Ave (east side of Manhattan) and they are express trains. I used to live by those in the Bronx and if a game was playing, those trains would be packed to the stadium, especially the 4, which I prefer. NYC to Atlantic City is at least 2 1/2 - 3hrs away. NYC to D.C is 4hrs. Whatever you decide to do, have lots of fun. Those places are lots of fun.

Have A great Trip!

Actually the B train doesn't really go there much anymore. It tends to stop at 145th street. Best to stick with the 4 and D.
