John Witherspoon, actor-comedian who for decades made audiences laugh in television shows and films, including the hit Friday franchise, died suddenly at his home today. He was 77.

“It is with deepest sorrow that we can confirm our beloved husband and father, John Witherspoon, one of the hardest working men in show business, died today at his home in Sherman Oaks at the age of 77,” Witherspoon’s family said in a statement to Deadline. “He is survived by his wife Angela, and his sons JD, Alexander, and a large family.

Saw this on my phone late last night at work.

Sad thing is he was scheduled to perform in my area in Charlotte NC

Nov 14-16. All the comedians are paying tribute to him.

He is best known for the Friday movies and playing Pops on the Wayans brothers

but he is a veteran actor who goes way back to an episode of What's Happening, and

the movies Vampire In Brooklyn and Boomerang.

R.I.P sad

Great comedic timing and delivery, he provided a lot of cameo gems in movies. But I'll always remember him as Robert Freeman.

"I'm voting for Obama because he's gonna lower my taxes"

"Actually, he has promised to raise taxes at your income level"

"Well, I also support Obama because he's against corporate bailouts"

"That is also not true"

"...and he's gonna get the troops out of Afghanistan...right?"

"Also wrong"

"Then what the fuck this ***** gonna do?!"

RIP. Epic levels of funny...one of the great comedic actors. I still hit the floor when I watch the potato scene in Soul Plane. I doubt there was a funnier scene in 2004 and I can't picture many actors who would have made that scene as entertaining. Should have been nominated for an oscar smile.

He was just on Joe Rogan's podcase a couple months ago, along with his son. It was great.

I've seen every comedian worth 2cents live since 1980.

Spoon is thee ONLY 1 that made me laugh so hard I fell out of my seat with tears in my eyes.

This man was a complete nut on the stage.

He will be missed. sad

He was scheduled to be in Charlotte Nov.15-17th and I wanted to go see him

but I would have missed him anyway as my wife just had surgery on Monday.
