Fitness Thread 2019

So just as I was about to congratulate Rodeo on his awesome baseball skills, the thread timed out! Great stuff Rodeo.

Having some problems at the minute with shoulder pain which has prevented me doing certain exercises. Saw the doc today and apparently it's my rotator cuff and I've either torn, or damaged a tendon. A scan has been asked for sad I'm on a load of anti-inflammatory drugs until we find out exactly what is wrong, then I'll need physio. Feeling a bit down about it to be honest as I failed to get through my favourite class last week. I just couldn't do it sad.

Nonetheless I'm still going to the gym, just I'm spending more time on the treadmill and spin bikes. The instructor is working with me to do what I can on the monster rig. Apparently it's quite common, so they've shown me some things I need to be doing to warm up, and what to avoid as I really don't want to make it worse.

Hope everyone else is doing much better than I am.

Sorry to hear about the shoulder! hug I pray it heals quicly and completely! Give it as much time as it needs, because shoulders are way too easy to re-injure.

Thanks for the baseball congrats! It was definitely a highlight!

I'm liking being gainfully unemployed. I've hit the gym regularly for the longest perion in I don't knwo how long. Next week I think I'm going to go back to my old gym, use my favorite bench press machine, and see if I can still push up 300.

Thanks Rodeo. I think I've damaged an existing injury as it is. About two years ago my Great Dane decided to run after a cat that I had not seen, and I just wasn't ready for it! Glad it was early enough that no-one saw me (I hope), but a bloody killer on my shoulder! I had thought it was long healed, it seems not.

I've not heard the term 'gainfully unemployed' before. I just Googled it. I think I can be described as that too at the moment (my husband might just say I'm a lazy bitch). Glad you're enjoying your time. Let us know if you can still get 300.

We'll find out about 300 on Wednesday!

We're keeping my daughter's pit bull this summer while she's working in Australia. That dog - which I'm pretty sure has some greyhound in her - is the fastest and strongest dog I've ever seen. There have been a few times where she was being walked on a leash and tried to take off after somthing.

I am very surprised I haven't had a rotator cuff torn. My sympathies, and I completely understand how you could injure a shoulder walking the dog!

I had a great experience at the gym yesterday!

I had booked on Monster Rig, but was naturally wary with my shoulder. Monster Rig can be intense so it wouldn't have been hard to do myself some real damage. When I saw the instructor my heart sank. He's the owner of the gym and like an army sergeant. I once was really struggling and told him I felt like I was going to die and he just said, "Don't worry, we have a defibrillator for you!".

Anyway, I was early so I went to talk to him and explained about my shoulder. All I can say it that he was excellent. So, so different to normal. He adapted exercises for me and kept checking I was okay. I couldn't do burpees so I did squats instead, and at the end we did a team disk push and I failed miserably (I've decided putting weight on it is worse than lifting weight with it), but he was super supportive, we didn't even have to do the losing team punishment (whoop whoop)! My faith in gym instructors is restored!

Happy I now have more confidence to try some of the harder classes, knowing I can duck out if it hurts. Spin class today which will be fine. Still waiting for my bloody scan date to come through to see how knackered my shoulder actually is though.

Today I went to my old gym to see if I can still bench press 306. But last night...

...let's just say that I played rock and roll guitar at a local restaurant and there's apparently photographic proof that I did not wear a shirt at all times. I wouldn't be able to remember one way or the other.

So I woke up this morning feeling...ummmm...probably very much like I did last night. I had an early meeting, then went back to the hotel and changed into my gym clothes. I got to the gym at 10:45 AM.

After a good warm-up, I put plates on the machine. First came 2 45-pound plates (one on each side) for a couple warm-up sets at 126 pounds. Then two more plates, getting me another warm-up set at 216 pounds.

So far, so good and no reason to keep warming up, so two MORE 45-pounds plates, which meant 3 plates per side for a total 6 45-pound plates or 270 pounds. Add in the 36 pounds for the two arms and there is the 306-pound total.

Deep breaths. One...two...three...four...GO!!!!!!!

The arms on the machine are independent. I got the right arm all the way up, but hit a wall on the left side. Mission failure!

But you really only fail if you quit and I am not a quitter.

I took a couple moments to re-hydrate and think. "OK Rodeo - you know you can get the right side up, and you know where the left side ends. So just psyche yourself up and tell yourself that this time, you're going to BLAST that left side right through that wall!"

And that's what I did!

So at age 60 1/2 I can still get it up. And that's exactly what I've been telling everyone today.

Looks like fun!

It is! At mine there are 20 'stations' (what they are changes each time) and you spend a minute on each station with 15 seconds between each one. I try to do it once or twice a week. It's tough!

I hope y'all have been having great work outs!

Being gainfully unemployed has been a physical fitness blessing, that's for sure. I've hit the gym three times a week for three months in a row now, and it SHOWS. Both in the weights I lift and the way my clothes now fit.

The best news is that I ditched squats, finding a leg press machine at the gym that I like and that should be back-injury-free. It goes up to 400 pounds and right now I'm maxing out at 340 pounds for 12 reps. Don't call the media just yet but for the first time in my life, I might have something besides Bird Legs!

The other improvement has been in shoulder flys. I can remember when I started doing these, it was with 12-pound dumb bells. I thought I was a total stud when I moved up to 15-pounders.

Well, I've been using 20-pound dumb bells for about two years but these three-times-a-week workouts have really got me going. Today, I did three sets with the 20-pounders and then I actually did an 8-rep set with 25-pound dumb bells. A new record for me!

I am assuming that we are all too busy working out and getting fit to post in this thread, LOL.

I'm now into my fourth month of gainful unemployment/three workouts per week, every week. Things are going well, with one MAJOR exception.

Last week I had done a load of laundry and dumped all the clean clothes on the bed for folding. I was leaning against the bed, leaning over it with my knees pressed against the mattress.

And then...POW!

There was a loud crack in my left knee, and then an even louder snap in my left leg. WTH?!?!?!?!?

The pain was incredible. Despite the 100-decibel crack of myu knee, it was ultimately OK. But my left hamstring was not.

I pulled it, or snapped it, or broke it. I don't know. It felt like it was pulled into two pieces. IT HURT.

This was the worst hamstring injury I've ever experienced. I've strained it a couple times, playing softball. That hurt, but all I did was quit running. This was EXTREME pain. And there's really nothing you can do.

I loaded up on Ibuprofren, and that's about it. Fortunately, there was no discoloration or bruising in the back of my left leg. I limped for a day or so but each day it got better. There's no pain now (five days later) but I am laying off the leg exercises until next week.

What caused it? I don't run but I do use the running machine at the gym from time to time. However, I honestly think the culprit is the chair we have in the study. If I sit in it too long, I can feel the hamstrings and leg biceps muscles getting sore. Either we have to get a new chair, or I need to stand up and stretch more often.

Other than that, all physical fitness items are moving forward, I hope yours are too!

Oh dear. Glad you're feeling better now. Sounds painful.

My fitness for 2019 has been fucked by my shoulder. I had to stop three of my four classes. I thought I'd be okay with my spin class. I mean come on, the only thing my shoulder is doing is holding a handlebar isn't it? - WRONG! About 10 minutes in I was in intense pain, about 15 minutes in I needed to get out - quick. About 17 minutes in I was flat out passed out in the corridor. How embarrassing. So now I can't even do spin. All my exercise classes are now out of bounds. So pissed off.

On the upside I had an injection into my shoulder yesterday (really bloody painful), if it works, great. If not I'll have to be operated on around Christmas.

Thanks Rodeo. It has been a little easier since the injection so fingers crossed! I'm going to go down the gym next week each day for 15-30 mins and just see what I can do. Gentle and steady is going to be the way forward. I've been revisiting 'Billy's Sunglasses' recently which I have concluded is the perfect workout music. My goal is to be able to workout for the full length of that before Christmas - something I could have done easily not too long ago cry

Hope your hamstring has fully recovered. Time for a change of study chair for you me thinks biggrin .

LOL, probably. I lowered it today and it seems to be much easier on my legs (this was my father-in-law's chair and I guess he set up higher than me).

I will really, really pray hard for success with your injection!

About 10-12 years ago I tweaked something in my left shoulder while lifting. It hurt really bad if I rolled over on my left shoulder in bed but curiously enough, the shoulder didn't hurt when working out. I went to see a orthopedic doctor.

He took some x-rays and said, "Well, there could be some cartilage tears in there. We'll schedule a procedure. Call my nurse". I figured he meant a little arthroscopic deal or something. Not surgery!

So I called the nurse, set up the time, and she said, "Do you have someone to drive you home?" I said, "What for? I'm having a procedure, not surgery". She said, "Sir, a procedure IS surgery".

eek

I said, "Hey, you know what? My shoulder suddenly feels a LOT BETTER! Bye!"

And the great thing was that it DID get better; in fact, it fully healed. Thank God! I hope that's how yours works out, too! hug
