the JOKER

A new movie based on Batman's most iconic villain, "Joker," is coming to theaters this October. Unlike most versions of the Joker, this one has a first and last name, Arthur Fleck.

Joaquin Phoenix will play the latest version of Batman's nemesis, and he has some big clown shoes to fill.

Warner Bros. released the first teaser trailer for its standalone "Joker" movie at CinemaCon, and it's already looking like a must-see.
Joaquin Phoenix will play the latest incarnation of the Gotham clown.

The trailers look good. I'm interested to see how it turns out. It reminds me a lot of The King Of Comedy.

Joaquin Phoenix lost 52 pounds to play the Joker in his upcoming movie

...about the iconic villain.

"Joker" director Todd Phillips revealed the detail during a new interview with Josh Rottenberg for the Los Angeles Times. Both Phillips and Phoenix added that the character's origin story will be far more realistic and grounded than other comic-book adaptations.

"All I can do is approach the character the way I do and that's it," Phoenix, who is one of many actors to take on the role of the Joker, told the LA Times. "I just tried to do something that we felt was honest and unique. However you guys want to talk about it, knock yourself out."

Fans first caught a glimpse of Phoenix's thinner physique after paparazzi photos surfaced online, which were taken prior to the movie being filmed in New York City in 2018. The full extent of the transformation was seen in the first trailer for "Joker" that was released in April 2019.

The trailer showed Phoenix' Arthur Fleck living as a struggling comedian in Gotham City in the 1980s. One scene also showed shirtless Phoenix hunched over while a bench and holding a clown shoe, with his backbone protruding and a large bruise on his right shoulder. Another scene showed Phoenix standing in a living room, with his ribs visible.

The most recent trailer, released in August, included additional shots that indicate the drastic weight loss. Previously, costar Zazie Beetz told MTV News that the movie script was entirely rewritten while they were shooting and because of Phoenix's weight change, they weren't able to go back later and film reshoots.

"We had to do everything then because Joaquin had lost so much weight that we couldn't do reshoots later on so we were figuring it out," Beetz said.

"Joker" hits theaters on Friday, October 4. Beetz, Robert De Niro, Marc Maron, and Shea Whigham also star in the movie.

This looks good, thanks for the heads up!

I noticed the weight loss immediately in his face, looks like Mr De Niro also lost a little weight.

The film looks good, but it looks depressing. I can't help that this "depressing" nature will limit box office and automatically make it a financial failure.

.

Perhaps great reviews and awards and word of mouth can ultimately allow it to make money, because by the looks of it, people are not going to be clamoring to go see this this.

It's pretty low budget. Coupled with the R rating it has, I don't think they're expecting it to do Avengers numbers. The Joker is a pretty popular character though. Plus, the trailers seem to be garnering a lot of positive buzz so I don't think it will be a financial failure by any means.

Good points.

we'll see. But let me put it this way, this movie looks good in an art house sort of way. If was an Alfonso Cuarón movie and you replace the name "joker" with "joe", it would still look interesting, and likewise no one would be clamoring to see it based on the trailer.
it looks depressing as hell.
We like to go to the movies to see new releases, but I'm not so sure I'm seeing this on opening weekend if at all.

Is it going to work without Batman to play off? Like that speech from Ledger's Joker at the end of the The Dark Knight, the characters kind of need each other. I can't imagine watching a Batman film without having any villains in it ... ditto, a Joker film without Batman.

I think it is possible

GOTHAM doesn't have Batman yet, but focused on the development of the upcoming criminals

Batman 1989 the Joker was Jack Napier (which has a nice ring to it) and Gotham Joker was Jeremiah Valeska. Arthur is Aquaman's first name

That's OK, I'm not in it or anything. Although if there's a sequel and they want to introduce a young Harley Quinn, I'm game.

Having said that, I'll be 30 next year so my days of playing "a young" anything are all but over.... Maybe I can convince my daughter to do it and I can live vicariously through her?

It depends on what they do. If you forget about the fact that this is The Joker, Batman's arch nemesis, and just view the movie as a story about a failed comedian's descent into madness, then I think it will work. It's not intended to be a blockbuster like the Batman movies. It's a more personal story. And as far as comic book movies go, it's a refreshing change.

It feels masochistic. Being entertained watching someone getting beat down until he breaks. Like an allegory to the mass shooters? Am I reading my own Rorschach test on this?

It's supposed to be similar in tone to King Of Comedy. If it's half as good as that, I'll be happy.

...on a side note did anyone see the newest Terminator trailer? It’s still weird. The editing?
I don’t know. Something just looks just looks so off. It’s like even the people don’t act or look real. I can’t put my finger on it.
Just bad acting and directing?
I hope the movie is fantastic, but the trailers are so fucking weird.

Yeah the trailers have been a bit crap to be honest. I'm still hoping that it's a decent movie though. Either way, Arnie is in it so I'll go see it day one regardless.
