August 17th. Clear the Shelters Day (adopt a pet)

Right place now.

Again, didn't know it was nationwide.

NBC and Telemundo stations across the country will team up with hundreds of shelters on Aug. 17 for the fifth annual Clear the Shelters animal adoption drive. Last year, more than 100,000 pets were adopted from over 1,200 shelters across the country. Since 2015, Clear the Shelters has helped 256,688 pets find forever homes. So if you’re thinking about taking home a new furry friend, consider heading to a local animal shelter to adopt during Clear the Shelters on Aug. 17 when hundreds of shelters will waive or discount fees as part of the one-day adoption drive.

Sadly, many of them will die in their adopted homes. One thing I hate about these clear the shelter days is the shelters literally let anyone adopt a dog or cat. There are usually no or extremely low cost adoption fees. Therefore, many of them end up in very unfit homes where they are mistreated. Really, often times, it's a can't win situation. I remember back in the day if you adopted an animal from the Humane Society, there would at least be a follow-up call a few months later to find out how the animal was coming along. I don't think they do that now.

Thank you for posting this! What a lovely sentiment.

.

I adopted a new best friend earlier this year after my beloved companion of over ten years had several medical issues for which he could not recover. I still miss him and think of him every day.

.

My new bestie is similar in all of the best ways! I love her deeply.

.

We did our adoption through Stray Rescue Network (https://www.facebook.com/...workrescue)

If you are considering and are in their area, I strongly recommend them. The process is straightforward, you must have a followup checkup six months after adoption.

.

A family friend fosters and rescues many animals at her zoo house (thats what I call it), we were fortunate that she had an adorable little bugger that no one wanted who was perfect for our living situation.

.

This group rescues from Southern US kill shelters where state law makes it so that really anyone that works at the SPCA/pound can euthanize unwanted animals, often leading to inhumane ends for them.
