Colts QB Andrew Luck informs team he is retiring

Andrew Luck dropped a bombshell during the preseason.

The Indianapolis Colts quarterback is stunningly retiring from the NFL, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported. Luck informed the team of his plans to walk away.

ESPN first reported the news.

Wild. Unreal. Crazy. Insane. Unbelievable. Nuts. Use whatever exclamatory word you want, it's a berserk story that dropped as the Colts were in the middle of their preseason game versus the Chicago Bears. As news leaked, TV broadcasts showed the QB on the sideline talking with backup-turned-starter Jacoby Brissett and other teammates.

The 29-year-old former franchise signal-caller has dealt with a plethora of injuries the past several seasons, including a shoulder issue that wiped out all of his 2017 season.

Luck bounced back with a fantastic 2018 campaign, throwing for 4,593 passing yards, tossing 39 touchdowns and leading Indy to the playoffs. If not for Patrick Mahomes' ridiculous season, Luck could have been a candidate to win the MVP last year.

Another offseason, however, was disrupted by injury. Luck began dealing with a calf injury back in April. The issue continued to nag the QB into training camp and was finally revealed to be an ankle injury.

All the injuries wore on Luck, and he decided to take his ball and go home.

The former No. 1 overall pick, entered the NFL as the epitome of a franchise quarterback owning the size, arm, intelligence, demeanor and grit. Luck immediately boosted the Colts from the cellar of the NFL to the playoffs. With a less-than-ideal offensive line in front of him, Luck helped drag Indy to the playoffs the first three seasons of his career.

After seven seasons, the Colts finally seemed poised to have the ideal team surrounding Luck to make a Super Bowl push. The injuries, however, wiped away those plans.

Luckily for Indy, Brissett is a starting-caliber quarterback and will take over full-time duties.

But there is no way to slice it, Luck leaving the NFL before turning 30 years old in less than a month is the most stunning retirement in history.

[Edited 8/24/19 19:19pm]

It was a shock at first blush. But not after some reflection. Unlike Manning, who had superb front office management and coaching, Luck was saddled with mismanagement and inconsistent coaching. It is a testament to his monumental talent that he made it as long as he did with the talent that surrounded him for most of his career.

It's sad to see all of these critics who've never played a down of football at the highest level, much less played it at the level Luck did, knocking him. Most human beings walking the planet couldn't withstand a quarter of NFL football, and they have no idea what it does to these guys' bodies.

If those classless fans want to boo someone, it should be former GM Ryan Grigson, whose poor personnel moves ruined this cat's career. Dude took a pounding his first four years, and the chickens came home to roost.

As annoying as Boomer Esiason can be, he nailed it when he said if you haven't played the game, you have no right to criticize Andrew Luck. Sometimes fans forget these guys are humans, not dancing monkeys just here to entertain them. And to all these knuckleheads complaining about their fantasy football teams being ruined, I mean, REALLY? Fucking pathetic. I agree with what Bart Scott just said - SCREW the fans!

HERE IS YOUR OLE MISS QUARTERBACK UPDATE FOR AUGUST 25, 2019

1. Andrew Luck retired. I can't blame him. He's been in pain for the better half of this decade. But his retirement vaults former Mr. Irrelevant/former Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly to #2. And he's only got Jacoby Brissett to pass. I don't even remember where Jacoby Brissett played, and I'm pretty sure he never broke the records of someone like Archie or Eli Manning, nor did he ever win a Sugar Bowl. So if Chad can stay clean - and that's almost as big an "if" as saying if Antonio Brown can focus on football - well, anyway Chad could very easily be starting in the NFL. (EDITOR'S NOTE: Jacoby Brissett played at NC State, where he in fact did not play in a New Year's Day bowl.)

2. The Houston Texans got absolutely curbstomped by the Dallas Cowgirls. It was ugly and it was damaging - Lamar Miller blew out his knee, and almost no one looked good. Deshaun Watson was taken out after one series, as it was apparent we have no offensive line. Our #2 guy Joe Webb played most of the game, but former Ole Miss quarterback Jordan Ta'amu got some playing time too. Here are the quarterback ratings from that game:

Deshaun Watson - 0.00
Joe Webb III - 6.7
JORDAN TA'AMU - 57.1

None of those numbers are anything to write home about, but look who's leading the way. Hotty Toddy!

It's possible, but not probably, that Jordan makes the Texans' roster. It's more likely that he parlays an expected practice squad assignment into a chance to make some other team's roster next year. But that's just how Chad Kelly got started.

THIS HAS BEEN YOUR OLE MISS QUARTERBACK UPDATE FOR AUGUST 25, 2019. WE NOW RETURN YOU TO YOUR REGULARLY-SCHEDULED PITTSBURGH STEELER PROGRAMMING.

Thank you RodeoSchro for that "interesting" report on the QB situation with the Houston Texans. For those of you not familiar with the Texans it's the team that has TJ Watt's brother on it. Now onto the Steelers update

Well the Steelers are now 3-0 in the preseason with their win over the Titans

Image result for ju ju smith schuster td titans gif

Ju Ju Smith Schuster is proving to be a real deep threat

Image result for james conner run against titans

Conner and the run game looked impressive

Image result for steelers sacking marcus mariota

The defense lead by TJ Watt had 7 sacks against the Titans

This has been Guy Smiley with your Steelers nation update.

As for the fans booing, I'm disgusted, but not surprised given the drinking that goes on at NFL games and the amount of money paid for tickets by fan-atics with dreams of Super Bowls dancing in their heads.

And Esiason had it exactly right. These armchair fans, most of whom have never played a down of football past high school (at best), think they understand how tough the NFL is. No, your experience in Pee Wee or high school or even small-time college doesn't count. Most of us have NO CLUE how violent professional American football is.

The Houston Texans are trying to trade Pro Bowler Jadeveon Clowney, since Clowney doesn't like being franchise tagged and won't report to camp. The reporting is that the Texans want OL Laramy Tunsil. Tunsil played at Ole Miss so naturally I'm in favor of this. Hotty Toddy!

But the Dolphins don't want to trade Tunsil; certainly not straight-up for Clowney. So it remains to be seen if this deal will happen.

The Houston Texans are incredible idiots.

Last night, they played back-up quarterback Joe Webb III all the way into the fourth quarter. Why? What if he gets hurt? JUST PUT IN FORMER OLE MISS QUARTERBACK JORDAN TA'AMU AND LET HIM PLAY OUT THE STRING.

Which they did - for one series. But the OL disentigrated; the Texans went three-and-out; and they put Webb back in the next series.

What. The. %^#^%$#&$^$&&$??!?!?!?!?!?!

I am literally screaming at the TV, "Look! Put Ta'amu back in! Not because I love Ole Miss quarterbacks. But I DO love Ole Miss quarterbacks! You know that! But if Webb gets hurt, that means we have NO REAL BACK-UP QB! Get Webb out of there!"

They did not.

Webb seriously hurt his foot. No one knows how long he'll be out.

IDIOTS.

This doesn't mean that Jordan Ta'amu is going to be our #2. Oh no - we'll sign Brock Osweiler or some retread like that.

We COULD do the RIGHT THING and sign Colin Kaepernick but there's no way that's going to happen.

IDIOTS.

The Texans are going for it. We traded away all kinds of draft picks to get Laramy Tunsil, Kenny Still and RB Carlos Hyde. We got a linebacker for Clowney. Andrew Luck retired. There is no reason a healthy Texans team shouldn't have a first-round bye in the playoffs.

I'm sure I just jinxed them, LOL.

Even if Luck didn't retire he would be injured most of the season. The Titans and Jaguars look weak this year. Texans should win the AFC South this year.
