Hmm... Now that you mention it, I actually have a lot in common with the emperor. A hatred for non humans, a lust for power, the ability to manipulate the most powerful jedi/most gullable idiot in the galaxy. Plus, we can both shoot lightning from our fingertips. Now, I'm not saying that I am the emperor but you've never seen us in the same room at the same time...

It’s great filmmaking period.
.
My guess is that some things were shoehorned by the studio to appeal to younger audiences. Such as the BB-8 scenes, the broom boy. The casino guy using bb-8 as a slot machine.
.
It’s a pretty dark and intense movie if some of those lighter elements were removed. Reportedly toy sales were down, and I can see why. As we have seen, tone of the movie even turned off arrested developed males.

Yeah, The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi are both pretty crappy. But TLJ? It really is unwatchable.

I can’t say I’m gonna boycott Episode IX, but I will say I will not pay my money to sit in a theatre and watch it. I simply do not care about these new characters, or what happens to them.

As for the Star Wars franchise, they should have stuck with animated series and left the big screen alone at this point. Or possibly a live action series, especially about the ancient Sith. But no more movies!

They're raking it in at the box office. Like them or not, as long as they're bringing in the cash, Disney will continue making Star Wars movies.

Now we know bringing in the cash doesn't equate to quality.

Look at how people initially responded to the 1982 movie Blade Runner, then about 5yr later onward something else happens.

Right. LOL. And here's the thing...ROTS was released in 2005 an TFA in 2015. That's a ten year gap, and they were doing just fine without the movies. They brought Ep 7-9 back to continue the Skywalker saga, and they screwed it up big time.

Nobody cares what happens to Rey, Finn, Poe, or Kylo Ren. lol

In my rants and criticisms of this new direction, I want you all to know, I still look into it. I'm a serious SW NERD. So I'm someone who is very academic with Star Wars information, ideals, etc

That being said I'm not having a knee jerk reaction to these movies and direction. I went to the theater to see TFA. I kept an open mind. I judged the movie rationally and even after buying the Art of the Force Awakens book etc my conclusion stands as it is. AND I'm still intrigued with concept arts of the movies. But I'm more a fan of the concept art and ideals than the films.

I think your points were well considered.

I think most fanboys and fangirls (and I'd count myself in that number) love the concepts and ideas of the saga even more than the saga itself.

I also love the fan theories and concepts. I'm a fan of SW Theory on YouTube, as well as the Shards fan film. I love the supercuts fans put together.

The Last Jedi, unlike TFA is not a retread by any stretch of the imagination. On the contrary, some were taken aback by how Johnson made it his own. Someone here just a few posts up saying it strayed too far from Lucas's vision.

lol

Explain. Because the similarities of TLJ with a combination of ESB and ROTJ are very retready.

Yes there are only 3-4 people discussing here lol so we don't have to be 'indirect' You know I said Johnson strayed from Lucas vision. And he contradicted things JJ set in motion.

I have been with Ugot2 on most of this thread, but TLJ, like ESB, has central themes of disruption (circumstances split the main heroes of the story) and failure. There are similarities -- the space pursuit, the capture of the heroes, the "training fails" of the apprentice. There are also callbacks to TFA in Luke's sacrifice for his apprentice and the "rebels" and to ROTJ with the Dark Apprentice taking down the Dark Master.

TLJ re-shapes and refreshes the angles, but they're there.

New gens? Hahaha. I like that.

Of course money does not equal quality. But Adisa said that Disney should stop making movies. My point was that due to the amount of money they're making, they have no reason to stop making Star Wars movies. Besides, despite a few "old gens" people do seem to enjoy the new movies. Like, I've never been a big Star Wars fan anyway so the entire saga means a lot less to me than most, but I enjoy the new movies for what they are. Entertaining movies for the whole family. Same reason I like the first two movies.

One really bonkers thing I've seen is when people bring up Kathleen Kennedy and feminism.
WTF lol

.

so there is some nerd politics involved because on a purely filmmaking level, the film is amazing. All the movie critics agree. And everyone is entitled to their opinions and the hate is fine, if that's your opinion, but do think it is weird. It's not like the movie is anywhere near prequels or Solo bad.

I didn't think Solo was that bad to be honest. It's probably my least favourite of the recent movies but it had some decent moments. Same goes for Episode 3, the strongest movie of the prequel trilogy by a mile.

I give credit to the prequels for gusto and "trying" to do something original. A lot of imagination and work went into them. The end product wasn't very good, but I can't fault it for lack of effort.

.

Solo was just phoned in. Besides everything else, It lacked creativity and imagination. I love Star Wars but I was so bored. I was nodding off by the third act.

Perhaps you're the least caught up in the baggage.

.

so I looked at sites list of best to worst of the Star Wars films, and I mostly agree with the consensus. The top 3 are usually Empire Strikes Back, A new Hope and The Last Jedi.

.

the worst three are usually the prequels with Phantom Menace right at the very bottom. Which it is.

lol well there is going to be a difference from someone who just watched a movie, and a fan.

As a SW fan I had the toys, I saw the films a few times in theaters and bought vhs and later DVD sets. I own 'the Making of/Art of books' I buy comics for the back stories, I have crates full of the novels. $$$

Like with Prince, real Prince fans know more than songs and albums.

I enjoyed Solo more than I thought I would. Of course overall it was telling the story fans knew of with the Kessel Run and Han leaving the Imperial military and meeting Chewbacca and getting the Falcon from Lando. Seeing the Imperial ship in the Kessel space was nice.

I think Episode 3 is very strong. Intense.
.
I think Episode 1 could have been a different story. The one we got in film overall should have just been a novel. I get it, that there was a political manipulation that was huge in getting Palpatine/the Sith in power. Before the EMPIRE was formed. People wanted action after that long of period between movies. Also 1st Anakin was whiney, a lot of people didn't like the kid aspect of the film, and Jar Jar was too much. Another thing that sorta didn't work was that he tried to keep the mystery of the Emperor / Palpatine / Darth Sideous secret. When by this point we all knew that Palpatine was a Sith Lord. There is a novel that tells how he got to this point, that actually leaves off where Episode 1 picks up. It's much better.

.

Attach of the Clones was a much better movie. Anakin was still a brat, Some things could have been left out and given room for other things.
.
There are some really awesome novels that could have replaced or filled in the story lines.

.

There is a novelDark Rendezvous nearing the end of the Clone Wars where Count Dooku, sent a note to his former master Yoda. He was wresting with his state of being. It was a combination of wanting to turn back to the light side and a chance to strike Yoda down. That novel was intense from beginning to end, THAT should have been a movie. Also there is a novel Labrynth of Evil that takes place prior to ROTS that ends off right where ROTS picks up. And it is GOOD. I thought that novel could have been a film released back to back with ROTS.

.

Shatterpoint is another that could have been. All 3 of these mentioned deal closely with investigations, secrets almost revealed and action that points directly to ROTS

They used the title of this novel and I was thrown off for a minute.
This novel series is very good. It starts off right in the middle of the end of the ROTS with the Jedi Purge and the rise of the Empire, it's really good, shows the underworld of Coruscant, The Siths use of turned Jedi to the dark side, and a these few Force users underground.
