The official trailer for Star Trek: Picard has finally arrived -- and revealed a plethora of familiar faces to fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation, including Data and Seven of Nine.

Sir Patrick Stewart, who returns to play Picard, was on hand at the San Diego Convention Center to deliver the exclusive sneak peek at the upcoming series, airing exclusively on CBS All Access (subscribe to CBS All Access here), which serves up a new take on his iconic character.

The preview alludes to a melancholy Picard, still reeling from the death of Data, who sacrificed himself to save his friend. The former Captain encounters a mysterious young woman who is feared to be the destroyer of all things and resolves to protect her. The new series will feature a crew of all-new characters, along with the appearances of some familiar faces like Brent Spiner as Data and Star Trek: Voyager's Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine.

Set about 20 years after the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation, this newest addition to the franchise will boldly go where previous iterations haven't and present a very different Picard, deeply affected by an unknown event that radically altered his life. A new Star Trek: Short Trek will serve as a teaser to the upcoming series, providing a backstory about what Picard has been up to in the 15 years since he left Starfleet.

"Tonally, it's a little bit of a hybrid," Akiva Goldman said of the new series. "It's slower, more gentle, more lyrical, more character-based."

Although Picard won't be what you remember, the series will tap into that familiar hope for a better future that has become emblematic of the franchise. "He's still standing up for what matters," said Kurtzman. "He's still standing up for what he believes. Age hasn't changed his resolve. Picard has to soul search."

The idea for the series has been kicked around for years but is finally coming together after Stewart changed his mind about returning has Picard.

"I decided that just over a year ago, and I had been for a long time saying, 'Thank you, but no,' and then as the subject matter of this new proposed series became clearer and clearer to me and when I began to meet our incredibly distinguished writing team and to attend session with them I knew that something very unusual was going to happen and I wanted to be a part of it," Stewart said of his decision to reprise the role. "To imagine that this would go ahead and I wouldn't be a part of it would have been defeatist and I'm very happy to be here."

Everything We Know About Star Trek: Picard

Previously, Kurtzman said of the series, "Patrick was very clear to us in the beginning. He did not want to repeat what he had already done. And by the way, it's been 20-plus years, so he couldn't possibly be that same person anymore. And so the question becomes: What has happened to him in that period of time? Have there been occurrences that force him to reckon with choices that he's made in his life? How do you hold on to being the person everybody loved when the circumstances around you may have changed so radically? Those are the big questions that we're asking."

Star Trek: Picard is expected to debut on CBS All Access later this year. (Don't have an account? Subscribe to CBS All Access here.)

Seven of Nine is not supposed to age, or is she? That will be a lot of work, but hopefully again a lust for the eye razz
