Blockers (2 blocked sperm out of 4) I saw a snippet of this movie while changing channels last night, and it made me laugh. Watched the whole movied tonight and it was a more miss than hit for me though there were some funny parts.

there will be blood (2007) 4/5

it's probably my annoying contrarian streak that leads me to find that the most acclaimed pt anderson film is maybe my least favourite of his. which isn't to say i don't like it. i don't think he's made anything close to a bad film, and i like this a great deal, & recognize that there's greatness in it for certain.

but i don't quite love it. certainly not like the master or punch drunk love or phantom thread. maybe because it feels too much like a stab at epic greatness.

not that anyone asked for it, but my pta ranking goes:

phantom thread
punch drunk love
boogie nights
the master
inherent vice
magnolia
there will be blood

i still haven't seen hard eight. i like that it's out there for me to see one day.

dark phoenix (2019) 2.5/5

not the disaster the sniffy reviews had led me to expect.
i'd call it mid-tier x-men. not close to the best, better than the worst.

there were some scenes that i thought were quite weak. the confrontation outside jean's old house & the helicopter scene in particular seemed almost shoddy. some of the writing felt like it came out of a tv drama.

but the ending sequence on the train is pretty good. not genuinely exciting, & it certainly didn't have anything unique, that stood out the way the better action scenes in xmen films have, but it was good enough.

every time michael fassbender was on the screen, the film gets about 50% better. he's genuinely charismatic, one of the few people who i can describe as being a genuine movie star without wanting to vomit in disgust.

& the movie moved at a good clip. if it's not particularly involving, it's at least very efficient & pacey.

DO NOT PAY MONEY OR WASTE TIME WATCHING "THE DEAD DON'T DIE".

Man, that movie was so bad that I just had to open this review with that directive. And I mean it - do not waste one second of your time, or one penny of your money, on this crappy film.

What a complete let-down. Where do I begin? With a large glass of pinot noir, preferably.

Which is what I did prior to settling in to watch this monstrosity. I got good and tight, as is my custom. One of the many benefits of alcohol is that it makes funny things funnier, yet doesn't make unfunny things even worse. That's my technical way of explaining that I'm a happy drinker.

Properly lubricated, the movie began. Bill Murray and Adam Driver are local cops hunting Hermit Bob, a hermit that lives in the woods. They find him, and he takes a potshot at them but they don't get offended. Hermit Bob has never hurt anyone in the 50 or so years he's lived in the woods. Kermit Bob watches Murray and Driver through binoculars, which is a weird thing for a hermit to have.

Nothing funny or suspenseful happens.

The movie cuts to the local diner, where Steve Buscemi is wearing a red hat that says "Make America White Again". OK, if anyone can get away with that, it's Steve Buscemi. Even when he's seated next to Danny Glover.

WARNING WARNING WARNING - Don't look at Danny Glover. It will make you feel bad. He hasn't aged well.

Despite the hat, and despite Buscemi saying he doesn't like his coffee because it's too black, Glover bids him a good day when Buscemi leaves.

Nothing funny or suspenseful happens.

Some kids in Juvie (yes, they really are in Juvie) see a TV report about the Earth moving off its axis because of polar fracking. This apparently is causing the troubles, although I don't think anywhere else on Earth has zombies except where Bill Murray lives. Also, the sun won't set, except later in the movie, when it becomes night for no discernable reason other than the director though the Final Zombie Fight worked better at night. It didn't, for reasons you shall soon learn.

Two zombie corpses awaken at Tilda Swinton's funeral home and, since they loved coffee when they were alive, they go to the diner. For some reason it's suddenly night time.

There, they kill the two overnight shift diner ladies, and then try to drink coffee. One of the zombies is Iggy Pop.

Nothing funny or suspenseful happens.

Danny Glover finds the dead diner staff the next morning and calls Murray and Driver. Driver keeps saying, "This isn't going to end well". Murray asks Driver what he thinks killed the two diner dwellers. Everyone else has said, "An animal, or several animals" but Driver says, "I think it was zombies. Ghouls".

The way he says "Ghouls" is the only funny thing in the movie, and it's only funny once. Kind of like "Ar-go f*** yourself" was funny once. And, like in "Argo", the "Ghouls" joke is used too many times.

There is a corpse in the jail for some reason. That makes no sense, as mortician Tilda Swinton is clearly awake, available and ready for more corpses. The jail zombie rises up and Murray and Driver kill it. In this movie, zombies don't have blood or bodily fluids - and therefore cannot have working intestines, stomach, or digestive organs - no, they are filled with black dust.

Hermit Bob watches all this through his binoculars.

For reasons never explained, Selena Gomez and two dudes roll into town and check into the one motel. They get eaten later by zombies.

America's Best Actor (TM) (Copyright), Caleb Landry Jones, runs a gas station/memoriabilia store. He gets a delivery from UUPS guy (no, I didn't mis-type that) but the ghouls show up. CLJ and UUPS Guy barricade themselves in the store, but it's no use. They forgot to secure the back door, and the ghouls come in and eat them.

Meanwhile, the Juvie Kids are asleep but then they wake up. They see zombies and ghouls all over the street. One of the Juvie Kids says, "C'mon! I know a safe place!" We never see the Juvie Kids again. Were they safe? Were they eaten? We'll never know.

To no one's surprise, Tilda Swinton is a master with the broad sword. She practices with it and prays to it. So when the zombies come, she's ready.

Hermit Bob watches all this through his binoculars.

In fact, Hermit Bob gets to watch the zombies eat Steve Buscemi, which makes him mildly pleased.

I have never heard of Chloe Sevigny. She plays the third cop. For some reason I thought that part was played by Kate McKinnon (I got my movies confused, McKinnon i sin "Yesterday"). I kept saying, "Man, what happened to Kate McKinnon?!?"

No one corrected me, which led me to believe that no one else had ever heard of Chloe Sevigny, either.

As the cops drive around, the movie's theme song keeps playing on the radio. Driver says this is because it's the theme song. It's a really lame attempt to break down the Fourth Wall. Later, when Murray asks Driver why he keeps saying, "This isn't going to end well", Driver says it's because the director gave him the script. Murray only got the scenes he was in, but Driver got the whole script. It was another exceedingly lame attempt at breaking down the Fourth Wall.

The three cops show up at the cemetary at night, although it's never explained how it ever became night. Tilda Swinton shows up, and everyone starts beheading zombies.

But then a UFO shows up, beams Tilda Swinton aboard, and zooms off.

I bet you're saying "WTF?!?!" So were we, but that is exactly how it happened.

Sevigny sees her undead grandmother walking around, goes nuts, and runs out of the car screaming "Grammie! Grammie! I love you! Don't eat me!!!!" Grammie eats her.

Then the zombies eat Murray and Driver.

Hermit Bob watches all this through his binoculars.

I wish the zombies had eaten Hermit Bob but the movie ended before that happened.

When this movie was over, I actually booed. The audience was in agreement with me that "The Dead Don't Die" is as stupid as a movie can be.

This movie is a total flop. It gets a big, fat ZERO.

I love when people share stuff like this, with or without prompting. I quietly soak it up.

Those would also be my two favorites. The only asterisk here being that I haven’t yet watched Inherent Vice.

As you say about Hard Eight, “I like that it's out there for me to see one day.”

The more I think about that dang UFO in "The Dead Don't Die", the madder I get.

I believe that was the single stupidest moment in movie history.

Bar none. Here's why:

1. The film maker - some dude named Jim Jarmusch, who when I hear his name it makes me think of Jake Jarmel from "Seinfeld" - takes great pains to set up Swinton as some sort of mystical person who follows mysterious Eastern philosophies

2. Swinton is extremely fair-skinned and Jarmusch makes her up to look positively albino-ish, adding red lines underneath her eyes. It doesn't make her look like a space alien. It makes her look like an albino - which would be fine, if there was a pro-albino message in the movie. There isn't

3. Some critics think it's intimated that Swinton knows what's going on. It's not. Her reaction to the zombie apocalypse is entirely consistent with someone who worships a golden Buddha by brandishing a broad sword at it; that is, she welcomes the opportunity to lop off zombie heads

4. Swinton shows up at the cemetary that night for the final zombie fight. Why? I don't remember anyoen telling her to show up. Murry, Driver and Sevigny are there because they're in the same car, but why is Swinton there? We will never know

5. When Swinton walks to the middle of the graveyard, the zombies part like the Red Sea. Again - why? They weren't scared of her earlier. They didn't worship her earlier. They weren't sent here by the aliens. There is no justifiable reason for the zombies to part and create a walkway for Swinton to travel to the center of the graveyard

6. And then a UFO shows up

7. There is NO reference to aliens in the movie - EVER. In fact, Jarmusch takes great pains many times to explain that the zombie apocalypse is the result of the Earth's polar axis shifting due to polar fracking. Furthermore, Adam Driver - who has read the entire script and says so - never, ever mentions that there's going to be a UFO

8. As a matter of fact, Driver is just as surprised as Murray when the UFO shows up and teleports Swington. But he had just said he'd read the entire script, and knows how this all ends ("badly"). WTF?!? Wouldn't he have told Murray that the aliens were coming? Sure he would! Wouldn't he have tried to join Swinton and thus save himself, and possibly take Murray with him? Sure he would!

9. And how did Swinton know the aliens were coming for her? How did she know to quit lopping off zombie heads, command the zombies to part, and get teleported to a UFO? She did all this as if she knew what was coming and was a part of it, but that is NEVER established in any way, shape or form

The UFO scene is the single stupidest scene I have ever watched. I sincerely hope I've ruined this movie for you, such that you never want to watch it or pay any of your hard-earned money for it.

If you simply have to see the stupidest scene ever filmed, I urge you to steal this movie somehow; fast forward to the very end; and satisfy your demented curiousity.

But even then you'd be wasting your time.

But if you do, sneak in.

If you pay actual money to see this pile of dooky, don't blame me.

I mean, there are movies that are so bad and so stupid that they're awesome. This is not one of those movie. It's just stupid and bad.

there are lots of movies i know i want to get to, that i'm fairly certain i'll really like, but that i keep in my back pocket so to speak, almost consciously leave them aside.

probably the most obvious one is the big lebowski. i love the coens, & have seen almost everything they've done & liked almost all of them, & love several of them. fargo is somewhere in the mix of my favourite films, for sure. but i'm happy leaving lebowski off the table for now.

hagazussa (2017) 3.5 if you thought 'the witch' was good, but maybe a little too fast paced & full of action, then this is the movie for you.

almost everyone who's seen this has compared it to the witch as far as i can tell, & rightly so, but i also think it's a bit of a sister film to ben wheatley's 'a field in england,' which also blends period drama & psychedlic horror & throws in some trippy drug elements.

i quite enjoyed hagazussa, & it was clearly a labor of love for those involved, but unlike the witch & field..., i did find it ultimately a bit lacking, didn't quite give me the satisfying mental crunch that comes from seeing a complete story fully told. but it feels like a movie i'll want to visit again, that might grow on re-watches & work its way into my head & never leave. absolutely worth a look.

hagazussa-a-heathens-curse.jpg?w=1000&h=563&crop=1

pieces (1982) 3.5 my 3rd or 4th watch, i think. it might be my favourite slasher at this point.

the more i watch it the more i love it. lots of fun kills. makes little sense, but in the fun no-sense making way. and lots of attractive women. maybe the best looking slasher cast i've come across so far.

rolling thunder revue: a bob dylan story (2019) 4.5

dylan can seem full of limitless wisdom one moment, completely full of shit the next.

i was a little confounded by what was real & what was artifice here, but that pretty much is the story of dylan's career, i suppose.

the music in this movie is perfect to me.

revenge of the mekons (2013) 4/5 fun documentary, more so a tribute to one of the greatest cult rock bands. i'd call them the greatest, but i reserve that top slot for the fall. obviously a labour of love, made with tons of affection. made me dig up about about a 1/2 dozen albums i hadn't played in a decade. also, i had no idea sally timms used to be married to fred armisen. weirdness.

If you were just now reading the B-movie thread, you would know that thanks to damosuzuki, I have just watched "The Kentucky Fried Movie". And if you weren't reading the B-movie thread, well...why the heck not?!?

It's Friday afternoon - don't tell me you were working!

"The Kentucky Fried Movie" was John Landis's second movie (his first movie was another one of my B-movie favorites, "Schlock"). BTW, the team of Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker wrote "The Kentucky Fried Movie". They went on to write "Airplane" and other classics.

With the exception of the groaningly inappropriate segment titled "Danger Seekers", TKFM has held up pretty well. Some segments bring up fond memories of youth, and YES I am referring to "Catholic High School Girls in Trouble" and the last segment of the movie. Hey, I was 17 when this came out - give me a break!

TKFM is a classic. It's a classic on its own face, but it would be a classic even if it wasn't funny, as it prepped Landis for his next movie, which was only the greatest movie ever made - "Animal House". Therefore, you should watch TKFM for not only the laughs, but for its place in movie history.

And also for the scene with Uschi Digard.

"The Kentucky Fried Movie" gets 4 1/2 Shower Doors out of 5 Shower Doors. The extra 1/2 Shower Door goes to damosuzuki for giving me the link. Have fun!

When I saw it, I knew it would get this type of reaction from some people.
Even though I applaud the filmmakers for swinging for the bleachers, i didn’t think they had the talent to make it work. For me anyway.

Echo in the Canyon. 6/10
Documentary on the confluence of musical artist/genres in the 60’s Southern California that inspired the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Mamas and Papas Buffalo Springfield and others famous folk, pop, rock artist.
The film meanders and doesn’t seem to know what it wants to say.

Toy Story 4 8/10

As funny and sweet as you would expect. Gorgeous and continually breathtaking computer animation that is still pushing the genre forward.

I forgot all about KFM. I saw it several times as part of a weekly midnight movies series during the 70s for people who liked to see freaky movies in altered states or perhaps just thought it was fun going to a movie so late. I thought it was hilarious then, but haven't seen it since. Other midnight movies were all the early Mel Brooks movies. A Clockwork Orange, Tommy, some Groucho Marx classics, and several Fellini movies among many more. It was always to fun to go!

Have fun!

danger seekers has definitely not aged well. but it is otherwise lots of fun.

unrelated (2007) 3.5

my controversial opinion is that tom hiddleston is a good looking rascal.

this ebbs & flows very nicely, with a nice naturalistic manner, until there's an emotional climax that really felt terribly false & out of place with all that came before & after.

it's probably an accurate depiction of how a woman might talk to another woman when she's at her lowest, but it made me very uncomfortable & caused me to cringe & look away.

lots to admire in it regardless.

toy story (1995) 5 i'd never seen this before last night. i don't know why not.

Wow, I don't know why I was so surprised by this, but I was. Are you going to follow it now with 2, 3 & 4? Or have you seen some of the later ones? (we're going to see TS4 later today)

i watched 2 last night (loved it), & am probably going to watch 3 today. 2 was the only one i'd seen before, but even that was 20 years ago in a house filled with little kids running around & generally misbehaving as kids do, so that scarcely counts, does it? i will definitely be catching 4 - but i'm probably going to leave it to next weekend, since it looks like the temps are forecasting to hit the 30s, & i'll get the added benefit of enjoying the a/c.

secret sunshine (2007) 4/5 a widow trying to rebuild her life instead has it upended by more tragedy.

subtly moving, one of the more interesting & (i think) sympathetic representations of religious belief i've seen in a modern film, and overall just a great film about grief. would be one of the best movies i've ever seen if it wasn't so bloody long.

there was no need for this to be 140 minutes long.

Just returned from TS4 (10/10). But I was always gonna love it. It's probably the only animation where I enjoy looking at the textures of stuff (I'm so sad), but hey, it always impresses me in the Toy Story films. Enjoy the sunshine - it's gloomy in Blighty, thunderstorms and rain due.

The animation is gorgeous. i was in awe of all the little details. The rain, the cobwebs, the road.
As amazing as the original was, It’s interesting to see how primitive the original is compared to this one. The Toy Stoty movies are also the history of computer animation.

Completely agree. I can't believe I was in awe at the tarmac (to give just one example)! Toy Story animation has always been great, even in 1995, but yes, I agree, if you watch them together you can see how far we've come since then. Especially with some of the characters and their texture, for example: Buttercup's fur, Bo's face, Jessie's hair etc... I could go on and on. Awesome.

Cleo from 5 to 7 (1962) - Cleo, a singer and hypochondriac, becomes increasingly worried that she might have cancer while awaiting test results from her doctor.

What an amazing walk around Paris. It's inexplicable that I waited this long to see it for the first time. Another French New Wave winner. 4.5/5

War Games 9/10

Saw this on Hulu and wanted to revisit it and see how well it has held up for a technology based movie from 1983.l and see if it was relevant today. And it’s held up incredibly well. The basic premise of machine learning is more relevant today than ever as it’s still the basis of the most amazing technologies today.the acting is superb. The direction and writing is well crafted and well researched. But most importantly it’s very entertaining and has a great message.

I think this is one of Mathew Broderick’s first movies and he’s so good. Go to Hulu and watch whenever you have time.
