Apple reportedly set to kill iTunes. RIP iTunes

TWFpbkltYWdl

According to Rolling Stone magazine and Bloomberg News, Apple is reportedly going to announce at their developers conference on Monday that they are scrapping iTunes after 16 years.

https://www.rollingstone....es-842750/

When Apple introduced iTunes in 2003 to go along with their iPod devices, they revolutionzed the consumption of music from physical formats like CD's and vinyl and even record stores to digital formats that could be easily downloaded to one's computer, iPod. and later smartphones. However, iTunes became a victim of its own success, as it spawned the rise of streaming services like Pandora, Spotify, Tidal, and Beats Music (which they later acquired). Apple plans to create three separate stand-alone apps for music, movies, and general podcasts.

Any company that requires bloated software in order for me to put audio & video on their devce can die. Not only that, a company which then goes ahead and obfuscates file names so it's impossible to know what the files are without the bloated software. They can go poke their eyes out. Any company that doesn't allow users to copy and paste the files like a regular USB stick when using their devices can go jump off a cliff, as far as I'm concerned.

Any company that still insists on non user-replaceable batteries in its devices and practices a very repair-hostile attitude towards their products (and users) can stew in their own juices.

Co-sign on every single thing you wrote.

Can´t stand those policies.

Hard to remember that this was the "nice" and "underground" , alternative company ages ago and Microsoft was considered evil.

Not that Microsoft is any better but at least they both suck equally these days.

So what´s going to happen to all the music that people have on their devices?

I guess you have to back everything up. I was done with i-tunes a few years ago when I purchased music. The artist or label decided they didn't want the music available on itunes any longer and I lost my purchases. The songs were wiped out of my library. I made the mistake of not backing the songs up so I basically rented the music from itunes. This is why I always prefer physical media over downloads any day.

I rarely use iTunes. I only have a bunch of music on an old iPod and a laptop that I got from a friend and iTunes was already installed.

So how do you back up songs if you´re still going to need iTunes to play that music? I thought you couldn´t play those songs without iTunes? I´ve tried to transfer some of the music to an mp3Pplayer for my workouts but it wasn´t possible.

It will probably transfer to the music app.

As long as drama sells, it’ll remain clickable.

Apple is likely only taking a 16-year-old behemoth that had grown way outside its original scope and split it into individual servings.

People have been arguing for years that iTunes has gotten so unwieldy that it either needed a complete rewrite or to be split-up based on the area of interest (music, movies, television shows, podcasts, books). It simply looks like Apple is doing the latter.

Not much change here for your presumably awesome downloaded and ripped music collection. smile

I used to burn i-tune songs to CDR-s and they would play in regular CD players with no problem. I have also saved some songs on usb drives. There are some Motown reissues that were exclusively released on I-tunes that didn't receive CD reissues or are not available digitially anywhere else. In those cases, I had no choice but to download on I-tunes but I made back-up copies right away.

Thanks for the advice. I better save all my music somehow.....just in case.

Looks like PC and Apple users will still be able to sync music devices and buy music through Itunes:
