People get married for a lot of different reasons, some good and others not so much. As a child of divorce I was very careful about this major life decision.

If you understand that the person you're choosing is your partner for the good, the bad AND the ugly, it helps with the choice.

Being friends is also critical and the ability to laugh or maybe that's just me.

I know I married the right person. 31 years this September.

Attraction is the obvious one, and not just initially, that needs to continue ... but the most important thing I've found is a shared / agreed opinion on the right way and the wrong way to treat another person.

My wife and I both have the same standard of what is and isn't acceptable behaviour in treating people, particularly each other. Sounds simple but I'm always amazed by the amount of people I meet in relationships who don't have this.

Oh, and never go to bed on an argument.
