I've enjoyed him hosting Jeopardy for decades. Hope he wins his fight; prayer will be sent.

I am not saying this could ever, and God forbid it ever does, happen to Alex Trebek, but didnt Patrick Swayze say that he was gonna fight the same disease and now where is he???

Swayze had something on his liver that had metastasized. He was also a heavy smoker, even near the end of his life. He did technically die of pancreatic cancer, but he had a head start with the other cancers in him already.

The thing about pancreatic cancer is that there is no screening process for it. It's so subtle and spreads so quickly, it's often found out once it's very advanced. That's why the survival rate is so low. It's just impossible to find it earlier. The pancreas sits behind the stomach, and Swayze was reported to have part of his stomach removed early in his fight. The liver tumor happened after that, then they found the stage IV pancreatic cancer.

I don't hold out much hope for Alex, but anything could happen. I surely wish him a victory over this.

He said "the prognosis for this is not very encouraging" But the truth is at stage 4 very few beat it...as in 1%.

Maybe the best hope is to raise awareness?

Agreed. I'd be really surprised if he survived it. I guess I meant Swayze had a host of shit going on before the pancreatic stuff kicked in.

I doubt it. Back in the day, Jeopardy! originated in New York City. I'm pretty sure it isn't still taped there.

Stage IV is really bad news. We've watched Alex on Jeopardy ever since he first started hosting the show mid 80's. This was really a shock when we heard the news and I don't really expect he will be around long. Seems like every time I turn around I hear about someone dying from pancreatic cancer these days.

I use to watch when Art Fleming was the host. I didn't know this.

It has metastasized to his other organs. If I were him, I would take it easy somewhere beautiful with important people in his life as he does not have too long. I would not try to tough it out on TV in front of millions.

Respectfully: How he handles his life in his last days is entirely and solely his decision. No one else's opinion matters, or needs to be voiced. He knows how long he has as does his doctor.

Jeopardy! films in chunks the way Wheel does. It's a pretty sweet schedule on Wheel. Jeopardy! films 5 shows a day, twice a week, twice a month (basically 2 days a week every other week). A lot of these shows like Wheel, Judge Judy etc have similar schedules. (Judy and Judge Mathis film on the same stage, too.) So he has plenty of time to do whatever he wants in between those two days a week every other week. I mean, his work schedule is basically 4 days a month. And if he wants to feel like he has a purpose and something to do until his time is up, if it ends sooner than later, then so be it.

Human nature is to fight disease and not give it any leeway in their life as long as possible. I'd keep doing the same instead of retiring and sitting at home waiting to die. I wouldn't be surprised if he died at the podium, doing what he loves. And if he did, no one would blame him.

'hope' and 'let's fight this' too much. I have worked in the ER for years and have seen end-stage (IV) cancer patients come in who are fighting a futile fight...emaciated, dehydrated, nauseous,in pain etc; devastated by the treatment and the disease. More than once we have had to have the' Conversation' in the ED which should have been initiated by the oncologist. I have been involved with this particular scenario dozens of times.

When I hear Mr Trebek say he is going to fight this and keep working, I wonder if he has been given all of the facts to make an informed decision. The cancer has metatasized to many of his other organs.

My initial comment had to with having time to find closure with loved ones etc. while there is time.

I understand. But I do think with that filming schedule being so sparse, he will have way more time with his family anyway. Besides, I'm sure you know a lot can happen in a short period at this point. He may not make it to another taping. It's so ironic, because a couple of months ago he had talked about hanging it up when his contract was up for renewal next time (3 years or so). He later said he wasn't going anywhere. Now - the outlook is grim.

I would imagine the "fight" is a noble front for a dismal prognosis.
