New Star Trek Thread: PRINCE reference!!

There was a Prince reference in this week's Discovery. Reno gets knocked out and when she wakes up she says "Weird dream. I was playing drums for Prince, and there were doves and a parade."

Later there was a Bowie reference when Tilly sings Space Oddity.

WTFuck?!?

Between these references and the attempts at humor that has peppered this season so far, it is clear that the producers' reaction to the Trekkies on youtube that hate Discovery and love The Orville is to add comedy and pop culture references. Which is just... dumb.

I like Discovery (and The Orville) but I would love it if they would hire someone that actually respects the legacy to keep them from doing shit like this.

That´s stupid and does not really fit into Star Trek at all.

Does it even make sense timeline wise? I mean, aren´t they so far in the future that a pop culture reference like that would be very unusual and unrealistic?

By the way, I can´t stand The Orville. lol And I´ve really tried to like it but the humor is just not my thing. But then again I´m not a big fan of Seth McFarlane to begin with.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

On second thought....though I still dislike the idea of a Prince reference in Star Trek, I think the thought of him still being known in the future is nice.

But TV shows like Star Trek should, in my opinion, avoid pop culture references and make sure that they don´t overuse humor.

I don't like the references either. Yes it's cool to think that 300 years from now people would know Prince & Bowie, but it just seems out of place and forced.

I like The Orville because there's not too much Seth type humor. It' just a little bit. But for Star Trek itself, a little bit is too much.

I don't know if she said "a parade" or "a beret". The latter seems more obvious in that more people would get a beret reference than a parade reference. But either way, the reference was great. Tilly is such a fun character, too. I love Tig Notaro so her on anything is great for me.

Edit: My roommate and I both love The Orville and Discovery equally. The latter feels like a movie every week, and the former is a great alternative to some of the stuffier moments on past Star Trek franchise products. I thought it might be all slapstick stuff, but Macfarlane really had a great idea and has a great team of writers and producers onboard for this one. I have noticed some similar storylines lifted (either purposely or indirectly) from Star Trek episodes across the board. But still a top notch show.

Even this recent episode of Discovery was very similar to one on ST:TNG, "Tin Man" S03E20, where there was an orb that the Enterprise encountered that was trying to communicate. There was another with the crystalline entity. And, more loosely, one where a group of people was holding jellyfish-like creatures hostage for their power capabilities.

With the recent episode of The Orville, it's very similar to ST:TNG when Tasha Yar and Data fuck (S01E02 "The Naked Now", which was a rehash/sequel of an original series show, "The Naked Time"), as well as an episode where Data has a girlfriend, D'Soro, "In Theory" S4E25.

I can't tell from hearing it, but the subtitles on the file I watched did say "parade". It was a pirate file though, so who knows.

Ahh, good to know. I d/l'd the show so I didn't have any other subtitles embedded other than when the universal translator went haywire.

Finished Star Trek Discovery. Liked it, though have issues with it besides the ones I mentioned. Didn't like limited characters a such as Lorca and Landry. I liked Lorca, maybe he still is alive in the regular universe.

Here's a video that breaks down the facts and the rumors about the history, the current status and future of the rights for the Star Trek franchise. The implications of the CBS/Viacom split, Bad Robot's involvement, the 25% differences, everything is explained.

Most importantly the deception of the Kelvin/Prime timelines is revealed to be a mis-direct. The reality is that everything from 1966-2005 is "canon", while 2009- and up is "alternate". We also learn that "alternate" Star Trek acutally includes Kelvin AND Prime (but not "canon") and what that means.

It's a long (49min) video but totally worth it for anyone that loves Star Trek and is frustrated with JJ's movies or Discovery.

If you're a fan of Star Trek and scifi franchises, Midnight's Edge is an excellent youtube channel. Worth exploring beyond this video.

While I HATE some aspects of the show, overall I enjoy it quite a bit. It does feel more like the JJ movies than all the other series. It's funny to me that everything I'm missing in this series I get in The Orville. Between the two shows I'm getting everything I need even as they both fall short on their own.

There's so much on both ends to type it all out here. Some of it:

I hate the redesigns, the new Klingons, tech changes (like hologram communication), ANYTHING that messes with established continuity, cursing, the alien races that we've never seen before, in the second season too many characters don't talk or act like Starfleet (as we've known it) and there are too many scenes that are attempts to ape The Orville's humor & pop culture references, and behind the scenes issues like decieving the fans with the Kelvin/Prime timelines (neither of which are "canon") and making every episode look and feel like a movie, which drives the budget so high that the odds of being canceled early are high.

Phew!

I like when they do get it right. I love some of the cast (Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Jason Isaacs, Anson Mount, Michelle Yeoh). I like the mirror universe storyline. I love Captain Pike. Basically, Star Trek to TV is like Prince to music for me. Just like I'd rather listen to "bad" or mediocre Prince than 95% of other music out there, I'd rather watch weaker Star Trek episodes than most of what is on TV.

They've announced a Section 31 show starring Yeoh. Doubt it'll happen though. They're announcing too much too soon. Reminds me of WB's DCEU lineup announcements or Universal's Dark Universe announcements. They should just focus on making one good show and wait to expand once that one is successful.

Okay listen you fussy bitch (LOL) all that aside, you have to admit it's a great show. People fussing about Klingons is an old argument, of course. They've looked different so many times, it's almost expected for them to look not the same next time.

I think it's not necessarily in danger of cancelation because of costs. It's certainly not in Sense8 or Game of Thrones territory where they're filming in a gazillion places, driving up costs. Wasn't Sense8 up to almost $8M per episode by the end? I forget. They did choose to change the aspect ratio this season which lends to the look, but not necessarily the cost. You have to remember, so much of this stuff is CGI. It's just really good CGI. Hell, even shows like CSI, NCIS, Law & Order, etc., all of those use almost excessive CGI. When it looks like they're standing on the steps of the Capital building or Lincoln memorial, it's CGI. These companies have people standing on green stages 360º and add in everything. I can't imagine ST:D's costs are any different than one of those shows. A few sets, CGI'd outside shots, pretty standard stuff. I do hope you're right though, that they won't skyrocket themselves into oblivion.

I don't think Discovery is sweating anything The Orville is doing. ST has always had subtle humor about it here and there. Plenty with Bones, Riker, Worf, Data, Janeway, the Doctor, and Tripp.

As far as canon stuff, sometimes you just have to look at things as an alternate timeline or a different retelling. I think in general you agree that things are very Star Trek-y, and fits well into the lore of it all. I wasn't thrilled with Pike at first, but he's grown quickly on me. He's fucking sexy as hell, too. There is a great balance with the cast with genders, ethnicity, personality, etc.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

It costs more than you think. Season 1 was pretty much financed by the Netflix deal (for outside of the US). They don't have that crutch anymore and most estimations are that CBS subscriptions are waaaay below what was expected.

Trek has always had humor, but this season, it's verrrry "orville-like". That alien with the sneezing, gimme a break. Same with the current day pop culture references... that's from The Orville.

Compared to most online fan reviews, I love the show. Most skewer it and hate on it relentlessly while praising everything The Orville is doing that's more reminiscent of Star Trek canon.

What are you talking about?? The Klingons have basically looked the same since the motion picture. They looked the same in TNG,DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise. Hell Enterprise explained why the Klingons looked different in the original series then Discovery and the JJ let's blow up Vulcan Abrams movies got to screw it up. The Klingons in Discovery look more Star gate than Star Trek

Exactly. Plus these "Klingons" acted differently as well. The way they acted reminded me of the Taelons from Earth Final Conflict. The Klingons we know and love are true harden warriors. The Klingons would kick the asses in a battle with the fake Klingons of Discovery.

Actually, I do. But if you want to just be argumentative about it, and you're getting lost in the number of ridges on their head, that's on you. Klingons have had pointed (no pun) differences throughout the franchise.
