What do you do for a cold?

I don't get sick often but when I do I turn into a old man baby. Last night started with crazy sneezing and sinus and it was hard to sleep as the faucet nose kept running.

Wife made me a "hot tottie" which was tea, honey and a shot of whiskey. Not sure why that's helpful but it tasted good and the hot liquid seemed helpful.

What do the people of the Org do when they're sick?

Any remedies passed down from fam?

Just deal and wait it out?

Tumeric baby! 2 spoonful into the boiling water, drink it, keep yourself warm and go to bed the next morning you're a new person. Reduces inflammation and helps get rid of toxins.

Otherwise the good ol' tylenol cold + warm blanket + nap works well too. Making yourself sweat is the key while sleeping. But I got the sense that you were looking for more home remedies than medicine so lol.

Rest! The cold is going to run its course, but if you get a lot of sleep/rest, it will allow your already depleted body recover a little quicker. Lots of fluids too.

I am a HUGE fan of Zicam. First sign of a cold, I'm using the nasal spray or swabs every three hours like clockwork. The cold still happens, but it's shorter and the symptoms aren't as bad.

I have also been able to more or less ignore a cold by treating the symptoms with a cocktail of Mucinex DM, Sudafed (the real stuff with pseudoephedrine) and Aleve.

Have a hot shower or bath before bed. The steam will clear your sinuses. My husband reckons that honey is a cure for every ailment. Whenever he's sick he puts it in everything. A particular favourite of his is hot water, freshly squeezed lemon juice and a spoonful of honey. He says that works better for colds and flu better than any medication.

I'm going to use this and the suggestion for more rest.

Thank you!

A hot sauna makes me feel better but I can't say it makes the cold go away.

What really works for me is this, listed according to level of efficiency:

1. Lots and lots and LOTS of raw, crushed garlic. Make sure it is raw and freshly crushed or grated. Or just chew on a whole clove and swallow it. If you can´t eat garlic on its own, try to make fresh zaziki using more garlic than the recipe asks for. Or make some soup and add the raw garlic when the soup is no longer boiling hot so that you don´t ruin the healthy stuff in the garlic (allicin).

.

2. Use lots of very hot ,spicy chili or cayennne pepper or any other kind of very hot pepper, or use some hot Chinese sauce. Mix it with soup.

.

.

3. Speaking of soup....try to eat as much chicken soup as possible (if you are not a vegetarian). Add lots of carrot slices to your soup, and of course raw garlic and chili....either dried chili flakes or fresh chili or very hot chili sauce. The chicken contains cysticin to fight the cold, the chili and garlic help a lot and kill viruses and strengthen your immune system.

.

.

4. Speaking of immune system......make sure you get between 15 to 50 mg. zinc per day. It will boost your immune system. I use zinc every single day.

.

.

5. Ginger. Best consumed raw and grated into hot , but not boiling hot water. Mix with some honey if you want. Ginger works really well for me and helps me get rid of congestion and it kills viruses, too. You can also add it to your soup if you like the taste.

.

.

6. Also important......vitamin D 3, drink lots of hot water, add some lemon for taste if you like but make sure that the water is no longer boiling hot so that the vitamin C of the lemon does not get destroyed. Sleep a lot for recovery. Try a steambath or sauna if you can. And take some Tylol Hot or maybe some Thera Flu or Vick MediNite or some other OTC stuff to help you feel and sleep better, and maybe some extra aspirin or paracetamol . What also works well is sage tea, lindenflower tea, echinacea and umkaloabo if you are coughing.

.

.

.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. Get well !

- Manuka Honey (I use no less than 70 MGO), it works as a preventive treatment too. My local health food store regularly has 1/2 price offers on them so I always make sure I stock a few jars in the winter. I use it daily in tea and coffee instead of sugar, I also spread it on toasts.

- I also use a French homeopathic remedy called Yersin Serum, which gives your immune system a boost in case of any wintry ailments such as colds and flu. This can be used as a preventive treatment too.

That's not the whole story. You are conveniently leaving out the most important part. The ONLY way sex makes you feel better is if your partner actually DOES gets sick from it. After all, if you're not doing it for spite, then what's the point?

Or it that just me?

I don’t know - I only have sex to feel good - never considered spite!

Normally when I feel like I’m getting a cold sex does get rid of it..... I am not sure why but I know it works!!

There are so many international homophones out there... I guess it all depends on what's already on your mind. Manuka really isn't a brand though, it is the Māori name of the small tree in New-Zealand and Australia, that the bees have been taking the pollen from to produce this type of honey.

Living in western Sydney is really unique because there is a big mixture of different cultures and all the swear words become a second language - a mixture of Lebanese Greek Italian Latin Croatian Turkish Indian and Asian - it’s not just swear words that bring us together, it’s good food and culture! We have learnt to live together without too much drama! Everyone here knows the tree and the honey and the Arabic translation - we just think it’s funny!

The honey is actually unique and many people here purchase it for remedial purposes, it’s very popular!

Thanks for all the responses, I tried almost all of them, didn't get to the tumeric but I will.

From everything I read the starve a cold thing is a passed down misconception. Crazy what you can learn when you're deep into a fever with the chills at 3 AM.

Feeling a better today. I won't go into the details but it seems to be moving through by body into my chest now. Just need to keep up with the fluids and rest (along with everything else) and let this plague run it's course.

Not sure when I turned into such a baby but this was one of the worst colds I can remember.

Thanks again Org, you guys are great!

SLEEP.

I have been fighting a cold since Friday.

Most of the past 4 days has been in bed.

Vicks vaporub is the family go-to remedy, along with copious amounts of hot tea.
