We'll just have to agree to disagree on that.

Everyone should watch "The Predator" and then come back and tell us what you thought. Here are your choices:

1. Holy CRAP, that was almost as good as the original "Predator"! Rodeo is a genius!

OR

2. What a major disappointment. Rodeo is usually a genius, but not this time.

Cast your votes and let's see if I'm a genius or if I have to start a thread titled "Hey EmmaMcG, It Turns Out I Am In The Minority Regarding The Greatness Of 'The Predator'".

IMO, while entertaining, it was a Predator for kids.
The real original film was a Predator for man.

Ouch. I'm giving you a 1.5. Best I can do.

Hey Rodeo, I don't know how to post youtube videos on here. But go to to YouTube and search for The Predator Honest Trailer. It's a fairly accurate description of the movie. Plus, even if you disagree, I think you might get a kick out of it.

There's loads of those Honest Trailers. But you're probably better off seeing the actual movie first before watching them.

OK, last one and only because we're going to a party Saturday night that's theme is "The Greatest Showman". As I'm SURE you all remember, I watched about 5 minutes of that snorefest and then left and did something interesting, like my taxes or whatever.

So when this party came around, I was kind of wishing I'd seen the whole movie (but not really, what kind of psychopath do you think I am). However, I used my imagination and came up with great costume ideas for my wife and I.

She will be a lion tamer.

I will be...........THE UNTAMABLE LION! Here is the beginnings of my costume:

40-58272-macho-loewenkostuem_33414d4c76_1.jpg

Awesome, right? Well, it will be after I buy a giant white t-shirt, write "CAN'T BE TAMED" on it in a scary font, and wear it over the top part of my costume.

To make it even better, I'm giving the invocation before dinner! But even though I'm not shy, I'm going to put on regular clothes for that part of the evening.

Anyway, here's the last "Honest Trailer". I watched it, hoping it would shed some light on what "The Greatest Showman" is about but all I learned was that P.T. Barnum wasn't a nice guy:

Yes, i think a lot of people watching this movie felt manipulated, not just because of the portrayal of the black character, but boy was the Italian American a cartoon too. But my analytical mind said it was ok to chill and just enjoy as it was basically harmless fun. The family of the titular character beg to differ and have been vocal of their dislike of the portrayal.

Bradley Cooper should have been on the Best Director list. Major exclusion.
Bohemian Rhapsody should have been cancelled out by A Star Is Born. The latter is a much better film, and one musical pic is enough.
Blank Panther for movie of the year?! That's a bit much. Not saying it's bad it's just not Oscar good.
Roma is beautiful so hopefully it wins for cinematography, and foreign language film but it's not picture of the year in my mind.
Bradley Cooper's performance in ASIB is Oscar material. I hope he wins. As much as I love Stefani Germanotta aka Lady Gaga, her acting performance was only ok. She nailed the musical numbers tho. I loved her singing and I love the soundtrack.
Sam Elliott is a legend so I'm pulling for him.
The rest I have no opinions on.
I've seen 5 of the films nominated which has prob never happened and of those I enjoyed ASIB the most. Not that I think it's that good but it is the best of the ones I watched. Of course it's just my opinion which is only worth two cents.
It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN

Ottensen

Just off the top of the dome:

Loved Bohemian Rhapsody, but preferred A Star is Born. I expect ASIB to take the original song category, but that's it. Gaga did well in her big screen debut but she needs more roles and a little more seasoning. Her big voice and big de eyes remind me of Liza Minelli....I see her killing a lead role as Minelli one day...that's going to be her Oscar..at the heart of this project, tho- this was Bradley Cooper's vehicle ALL the way, as actor AND director, and I consider it a slight that he didn't get a Best Director nod. That guy clearly poured all of his heart into this.

I expect Glenn to take Best Actress for The Wife and would enjoy watching Black Panther Sweep all the tech nominations: that's where the film shined most for me. Regina Jing only gets better and better with time and I hope she finally gets her just due from her peers via "If Beale Street Could Talk"...which, btw WHAT A SOUNDTRACK that was???!!!

...as an aside, the documentaries nominated this year were damned good, and some of them you can even find on youtube.

After seeing The Favourite, I have to give props to Olivia Colman. SHe was amazing. BUT, I have not seen the movie Glen Close is nominated for. I have to find where this is playing and see it.

I totally agree with you about Olivia Coleman. She made such a unique interpretation of a queen that was risky yet successful. I also want to see The Wife, as I think Glen Close's performance might be Coleman's chief competition. The Wife is being released for streaming and DVD this week. It will be interesting to compare the performances. I wonder if anyone else here has seen both?

I know where you’re coming from. I loved Isle of Dogs (i know a lot of folks who hated it too) And I loved both Sam Elliot (and Bradley Cooper) in A Star is Born. I didn’t hate the movie as it was cheesy but entertaining.
I also love watching Willem Dafoe.

A pass? I never said it was anything but saying it was cheesy but entertaining.

Spike made an amateurish 80’s style TV show movie. It was jarring lay bad. I want Spike to win an award, but i want it to be for a good movie. By god, by the end of the movie when actual footage was shown during the end credits from the past year’s incident it solidified how out of touch and badly made the movie was.

I don’t want to give a movie an award based solely on “good intentions” That would be degrading for everyone.

It was bittersweet watching Lady Gaga's character Ally in "A Star is Born" perform at the Inglewood Forum given that I had gone to see Prince there in 2011. We miss you, Prince.

Having seen most of the nominees and reviewing the awards from the 4 major guilds (PGA, DGA, WGA, and SAG), it's hard to predict who will win this year, which makes it more surprising than most years.

If I were in the Academy, I'd vote for "Roma", Alfonso Cuaron, Olivia Colman, Christian Bale, Sam Elliott, Regina King, and for adapted screenplay "BlackkKllansman" and original screenplay "Roma."
