Climate Change

Ocean Shock
By Reuters
.
The planet’s hidden climate change
.
The seas cover 71% of the Earth and are home to the vast majority of living things on the planet. Water temperatures are rising.
.
Those rising temperatures are creating an epic underwater refugee crisis among marine life.
.
Fish and other sea life are fleeing for their lives, seeking the even temperatures they need to breed and thrive.
.
For decades, the United States has been tracking about 70 marine species.
.
Black sea bass in the U.S. North Atlantic, for example, have moved about 91 miles north.
.
Here, the data show how the center of the population has shifted each year, from 1968 to 2017.
.
Black sea bass are not alone.
.
This trawl survey tracks where species are found every spring
.
All told, 90% were north or deeper or both
.

In order to reduce my carbon footprint, I am cutting way down on my consumption of beef. I am also taking public transportation more frequently instead of driving.
.
What are others doing to reduce their carbon footprint?

Trying to use bipdegradable products (recycled paper). Use cloth bags for shopping, no plastic.

Not many people know that coffee cups from your local coffee chains are not biodegradable - they are coated in plastic. Bring your thermos and portable containers to Starbuck's, people.

I think it is great that your city banned styrofoam. There is no reason to use styrofoam dishes or containers except that they are cheap, unfortunately. There are better alternatives, such as paper take-out containers or reusable plastic take-out containers.

Fingers crossed to see how this goes. Many businesses are not happy about it.

Businesses can adapt! For too long, humans have been living with little regard for the consequences of our consumption. We have one home, Earth! We are killing Earth little by little. Businesses can’t move to another planet. Landfills émit huge amounts of methane and greenhouse gases. We all have to change our ways or we will self-destruct.

Huge reduction in meat-eating ‘essential’ to avoid climate breakdown
Damian Carrington, Environment editor, The Guardian (online)
10 October 2018
.
Major study also finds huge changes to farming are needed to avoid destroying Earth’s ability to feed its population
.
Huge reductions in meat-eating are essential to avoid dangerous climate change, according to the most comprehensive analysis yet of the food system’s impact on the environment. In western countries, beef consumption needs to fall by 90% and be replaced by five times more beans and pulses.

'Flexitarian' diets key to feeding people in a warming world
By Matt McGrath
Environment correspondent
10 October 2018
.
If the world wants to limit climate change, water scarcity and pollution, then we all need to embrace "flexitarian" diets, say scientists.

This means eating mainly plant-based foods, and is one of three key steps towards a sustainable future for all in 2050, they say.

Food waste will need to be halved and farming practices will also have to improve, according to the study.

It's appalling the climate change/global warming issue is still a matter of 'believing it or not' for the majority of people in the States!

Seems like China has move closer to duplicating one of the most powerful "clean" energy sources known in the universe. Star power.

https://bigthink.com/chin...ssion=true

The opposite of fusion is nuclear fission, which occurs when the nuclei of atoms split in a chain reaction. This process also releases extraordinary amounts of energy, and it's currently used in nuclear weapons and power plants worldwide. However, nuclear fission leaves behind dangerous radioactive waste. Nuclear fusion is relatively clean.

That's partly why scientists worldwide have been racing for years to develop a safe and reliable way to produce the conditions necessary for nuclear fusion, which in theory could someday give the world a virtually limitless supply of clean energy. The recent success at EAST represents an important step toward that goal.

I don’t know what the numbers are, but there are a sizeable number of Americans who are climate change skeptics, including the scumbag of a current president.

Its pure "I'll stick my head in the sand to pretend its not a problem so that I don't have to make the effort to change my lifestyle" ... lazy people who don't want to be told they're probably f*cking up the planet.

There's never been this many of our species living on this planet before. To think that this won't have some sort of detrimental impact considering how most of us live is madness.

Don't despair: the climate fight is only over if you think it is
Rebecca Solnit
The Guardian
.
The future hasn’t already been decided. That is, climate change is an inescapable present and future reality, but the point of the IPCC report is that there is still a chance to seize the best-case scenario rather than surrender to the worst. Natan Sharansky, who spent nine years in a gulag for his work with Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov, recalls his mentor saying: “They want us to believe there’s no chance of success. But whether or not there’s hope for change is not the question. If you want to be a free person, you don’t stand up for human rights because it will work, but because it is right. We must continue living as decent people.” Right now living as decent people means every one of us with resources taking serious climate action, or stepping up what we’re already doing.
