Suspiria (1977) - An American newcomer to a prestigious German ballet academy comes to realize that the school is a front for something sinister amid a series of grisly murders.
The acting is B movie-level comedy, but the cinematography is pure eye candy. 3/5
Suspiria (2018) - A darkness swirls at the center of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the artistic director, an ambitious young dancer, and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up.
This movie won't appeal to general audiences. It takes a long time to get going with a convoluted plot and the truly scary scenes are few and far between. Having said that, I liked it more than the original. The public dance performance is a thing of beauty and the finale, a grisly spectacle. Radiohead's Thom Yorke also recorded a memorable score. 4/5
who we are now (2018) 3/5 parolee tries to get custody of her son. widely praised, it seems, but i thought it was a bit too on the nose to the point of being melodramatic, even didactic. it's fine as a well-meaning drama, but it all felt like too much artifice & stageyness. i couldn't help but compare it to the way you can immediately fall into a farhadi film, the way he can make you forget your watching a screen. by those standards, this comes up wanting, i'd say.
shirkers (2018) 4/5 documentary on novelist sandi tan retracing the life of the man who vanished with the completed film they'd worked on together 20 years earlier. this is one of the most non-embittered films about fraud & theft i've ever seen. it's not quite paddington 2, but it almost felt upbeat in a way that left me with a bit of a skip in my step for reasons i can't quite spell out properly at the moment.
leave no trace (2018) 4.5/5 father & daughter are unwillingly introduced to the world when they are found living an idyllic life in a park. perfectly subverts all your notions of what you expect this story to do & the way you expect them to behave. this will definitely be one of my favourites of the year.

Completely agree, damosuzuki. I saw it perhaps 2 or 3 months ago and it’s still with me like a warm blanket on that morning the pilot light goes out.
BAO. A short animated film. 3/5. A mother tries to keeps her son home, close. The horror. But, then again, why can't kids grow up and stay home, and live happily ever after?
Boy was this movie depressing. The story of the final days of writer Oscar Wilde. Rupert Everette stars, wrote and directed. I guess there is no happy way to tell this story but I think there may be a more cohesive and interesting way.
Great acting across the board. Richard E Lewis steals the movie. Based on a true story about a woman down on her luck who sells forged documents by famous literary figures. Other than it being about unpleasant people doing unpleasant things and a couple of obviously Hollywoodized flourishes it’s a suprisingly entertaining movie.

cool, i'm truly glad to hear you liked it as much as i did.
madeline's madeline (2018) 5/5 if we lived in a world where paddington 2 wasn't released in 2018 in north america, this would almost certainly be my movie of the year. it's bizarre & funny & frightening & incomprehensible & every second of it hums with imagination & creativity & originality & a weird energy that feels incomparable to anything else i've seen in years, maybe ever.

NON-MOVIE-RELATED NOTE: I had to go up in the attic yesterday and re-light the two pilot lights on our heating units. NOT FUN. My legs are sore today from all the squatting.

I need to watch some movies.
I’ve got nothing for two. I’d probably be found frozen to my own procrastination.
three identical strangers (2018) 4/5 truly fascinating documentary on triplets separated at birth & adopted into different homes who then found each other as young adults, though it slightly strawmans the general consensus position on the influence of biology & genes on the course of a person's life imo. i think the ending does a real disservice to the topic. (I also think judith harris's 'the nurture assumption' would make an excellent companion book to this doc.) regardless, this is a terrific story & it's told almost perfectly, though i definitely have some quibbles with some of the statements that were left unchallenged in the last 10 minutes.
borg vs mcenroe (2017) 2.5/5 some of this felt a bit like skin-deep psychoanalysis (even though they're different, they're the same), but i could have accepted all that if they'd done a proper job of representing the tennis. i'm a big tennis fan, and i really don't think they did justice to the drama & excitement that comes from the best tennis points. i will say that if you're a fan of bjorn borg's hair, you'll find a lot enjoy here - the wig (i'm assuming) they had on the actor looks fantastic.
disobedience (2017) 2.5/5 a woman from a strict orthodox jewish family rekindles a relationship with her same-sex childhood friend while home for her father's funeral. the setting is novel, but otherwise this is a fairly unremarkable, even rote relationship triangle story. watchable, well acted certainly, but you've seen it before and you'll see it again. rachel weisz spits into rachel mcadams' mouth during their fairly steamy sex scene, if that's something you'd like to see.

& i should say that the film itself has received generally very positive reviews, & lots of people seem to like it, so you may find the film very worthwhile. i just can't get that interested in 114 minutes of people talking about their feelings, but that's my problem.
completely unrelated, for no good reason, & perhaps slightly tastelessly, here is a ranking of 10 films i find generally sort of interesting. 1 mulholland drive
2 the handmaiden 3 princess cyd 4 bound 5 lost and delirious 6 blue is the warmest color 7 black swan 8 the duke of burgundy 9 the hunger 10 atomic blonde

Hmm, I don't think i can make a list that long of preferred movies centering around this particular theme. Muholland Drive, The Handmaiden and The Duke of Burgundy would definitely make the cut.
I take points off for the sex scenes in Blue Is The Warmest Color becasue I found them to be--and the writer of the original graphic novel feels the same way--a little too male-centric in an otherwise very fine and realistic portrayal of female love. However, similar depictions I thought were totally fine in The Handmaiden because that film is pure fantasy spectacle.

well, that list was purely a product of pervy motivation, & if i'd put this together with actual quality in mind, it would look quite different. mullholland drive, princess cyd & handmaiden would all be at or near the top for sure, though. i think they're all great. & i more or less agree with you about 'blue...'

nancy (2018) 3.5/5 lonely, seemingly troubled woman becomes convinced she is the child of a couple whose daughter was kidnapped 30 years ago. extremely dour. good, & it sidesteps many of the moves a more obvious film would make, but with all that bleakness i'm glad it wasn't a minute longer than its 85 minute running time.
I just watched 31 minutes of pure awesomeness. A movie so over-the-top, so incredible, so EIGHTIES that it defies categorization. Yes, I can only be talking about:
KUNG FURY
I don't even know where to begin. How about with this - it was crowd-funded to the tune of $630,000, which doesn't seem like near enough to pay the 10,000 people listed in the credits. But somehow, this masterpiece was completed.
Really, there's no use trying to recap what happens. Just get a fresh cup of coffee - or a beer - and take 31:02 to watch what might be the greatest thing ever made:
KUNG FURY gets 10 Triceracops out of 10 Triceracops. I'm still blown away.
Seems to be a theme around here lately. I better rewatch a double header of Personal Best and Aimee & Jaguar. For old school repressed lesbianism (unfortunatly no hot sex), check out The Children's Hour from 1962.
Viola Davis is great as usual. Director Steve McQueen tells a well spun highly detailed tapestry of corny story in a very interesting and gritty manner.
Director Steve Mc Queen does a great job with the cheesy main premise of widows of recently deceased criminals joining forces to steal $5 million from a politician played nicely by Collin Farrell as well as nice cameos by A-list Hollywood actors.
I love the grittiness of the direction, but the story is just plain silly.
Enjoyable gritty cornball. [Edited 11/17/18 0:06am]
