You have Basques, descendants of African slaves called Garifunas (I visited them in Guatemala and it's like visiting Jamaica), descendants of the Maya civilization, Miskito Indians and of course the mestizos... Interesting thing about the Basque language is that it's totally unrelated to any other language in Europe.
Well my last name is Basque but there really isn't a "Basque dispora" in Honduras.
My dad grew up in a Garifuna community.
The classical Maya only reached the western part of the country. The majority of indigenous Hondurans are Lenca.
Have you ever heard of the Miskito Kingdom? It is lost to Western History Books but in reality it was the first independent Black nation in the Western Hemisphere. The Miskitos are mainly African-Native mixed people and they had an autonomous kingdom that ran along the Caribbean coast of Central America pre-indepence. When Mexico and the Central American States became independent, the Miskito Kingdom was absorbed into the new countries.
Amazing, I never knew that.
How u been? Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise. |
