Ancestors on my father's side hailed from Austria, Hungary, and whatever country my "no-good Dutchman" (as my grandmother referred to him) great-grandfather called home. Ancestors on my mother's side came from England and Germany. My grandparents were all 1st generation Americans. It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN

I was born in Ireland. My mother was born in Ireland. That's about all I know. I think both of my mother's parents were born in Ireland too. At least, I was never told otherwise.

Hamad said: Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Eastern Africa (Tanzania). Zanzibar maybe? There's a big Arabian présence/influence in East Africa. I once met a man in Mombasa who told me his ancestors moved from Arabia in the 17th century. Can't recall the name of the ethnic group he was part of. Anyway, that's how the whole Swahili language evolved. Kwaheri!

PurpleJedi said: My parents are from Honduras Interesting country that is. You have Basques, descendants of African slaves called Garifunas (I visited them in Guatemala and it's like visiting Jamaica), descendants of the Maya civilization, Miskito Indians and of course the mestizos... Interesting thing about the Basque language is that it's totally unrelated to any other language in Europe.

He has not said hello to New Zealand or Aotearoa yet, he's being nice, let it slide. . Since found out through checking that my English side is indeed Scandinavian, my Mum's name was Whiting and that name comes from the Viking OcHwitta, my earliest name ancestor was Godwin Witenc, and its likely that name was changed from something more Viking like Guthrum. Godwin lived in the mid 11th century and threw in his lot with William the Conqueror asd he gave his son the name Godfrey, a very Norman name and they were in the Domesday book. . Some Vikings/Dance settled England and anglicised their names, Whiting was one based on the fish that abounds in the North Sea. The name went through OcHwitta, to Witenc, to Witting by 1200 and then Whting around 1250 and Whyting around 1300 finally ebcoming Whiting in the 15th century. I have a broken link between Thomas Whiting who died in 1556 and my earliest direct ancestor Adam Whiting born in 1667 (my 9 greats grandfather). My odlest direct descendant, another English man was Thomas Hammerton the father of Katheryne Hammerton baptised in 1611 (11 greats grandmother). . Another famous ancestor of mine was Richard Whiting (1455 - 1539) the last abbot of Glastonbury abbey, and another Octagenarian put to death by Henry VIII after he refused to hand over the riches of Glastonbury in Novemebr 1539. You're right, its called Tanzania after the revolution. And my grandmom (dad's mother) was from Zanzibar. There is definitely a connection between Zanzibar and the Arabic peninsula, especially Oman (as it used to rule Zanzibar after they kicked the Portuguese invaders). The relationship between East Africa (espechially Ethiopia) and the Arabic peninsula in general has been unique and it spanned for over a 1000 year.
