I'm sure that your first reaction was - "Who?"

And if I told you he plays right field for the Atlanta Braves, you probably still said "Who?"

SPOILER ALERT - This is a baseball thread.

Well, if you are into baseball, check this out:

Nick Markakis is in his 13th year. He's always been steady, but never an All-Star until this year. He's a career .290 hitter who is batting .325 this year. Safe to say, there's been a resurgence in his game.

But enough of one to get him into the Hall of Fame?

Maybe.

Markakis is 34. He has 2,201 career hits so far, and is leading the National League in batting this year. I figure he'll end up with something like 2,222 hits as of the end of this year.

Which means he'd only be 778 hits away from 3,000 career hits.

Which is a guaranteed entry into the Hall of Fame.

If Markakis plays 5 more years, he'd need to average only 155 hits per year. If he plays 6 years; 130 hits a year. If he plays 8 more years - or until he's 42, which is not out of the realm of possibility - he'd only need to average 97 hits a year.

VERY doable.

And he'd go into the Hall of Fame as a guy with 3,000 career hits - but as a guy who never had 200 hits in any year (he has 149 so far this year, so he'd need 51 hits in the remaining 45 games, which is doable but not likely).

Is that Hall of Fame-worthy? I'm sure it will be a heated debate one of these days.

In the meantime, celebrate Nick Markakis - perhaps the most unlikely and under-the-radar potential Hall of Famer who ever played.

I have always thought Nick was and is a fantastic player. I would love to have him on my home team any day. I think he should go to the Hall, but not sure if that will happen. If he can continue to play well, he just might make the 3,000 hits. I do wish him luck!

I'm a Braves fan who is now a Nick fan. The Braves need a veteran like him to help all their newbies.
