$30,000 by 2024???

I am looking to save $30,000 by 2024. I have to cut out unnecessary spending, like going out to eat, late fees, ATM fees, buying 'little' things (like bottled soft drinks, etc). Trying to be more frugal and watch every penny, but its really tough! I've been off work since May (been on unemployment) and I've doing plasma donation in order to make more money. Starting a new job in a couple of weeks (my unemployment ran out). I'm on food-stamps right now (ugh) it is very helpful but I hate being on gov't assistance, and I just got approved for rent assistance. So I think this is gonna help me to save. I wish I had been more of saver in my 20's (I'm 35 now) and I wish I had more of a plan after I graduated high school. I have student loans out (35k) and I have credit cards, but I JUST got a credit card(s) over the past year. I just got approved for a second one. I probably spend more money on going out to eat, internet useage, communication stuff, etc.

I'm actually not a big spending on big purchases like clothes, shoes, I don't travel a lot, and I don't have any children, not married. I also want to find a job where I have a 401K plan by 2019. But in personal savings at least $30K. So I'm working on not doing unnecessary spending. I want to save because I want promote myself and do more traveling. My goal is to visit Alaska, Canada, Hawaii, Puerto Rico.

From now til then is about 5 years if you discount the remainder of this year. So that's 5 years to save up 30 grand. At 6,000 per year, that seems like an achievable goal. I suppose it all depends on how much this new job is paying you. But even so, 6,000 per year should be manageable for someone who doesn't go big on spending on the likes of clothes, shoes, holidays etc.

I grew up poor so even now that I don't need to be frugal, I'm still naturally a very shrewd spender (with only the occasional splurge). I use a lot of coupons, I cut costs everywhere I can by not buying "name brand" groceries. Take advantage of "buy one get one free" offers. If you still find yourself struggling to save the required amount, a second, part time, job could be an option. You can also sell any unwanted old clothes, CDs, DVDs etc.

I did sell some things in 2015 and 2016. Guitar, movies, books, etc. Didnt make a whole lotta money, ended spending that on transportation (bus, gas for car) etc. I've been trying to get with the whole minimalist thing, (a lotta vidoes on minimalism on youtube, online, etc). Much easier said then done, depends on your lifestyle.

As a taxpayer, let me tell you how AWESOME it'll be to help you subsidize your trips to places I, myself, haven't been able to afford to go! smile

I think that you misread her post...
...she WANTS to find a job that allows her to do all of those things (travel, save $30k, etc.)...

No. I read it exactly right - especially this part:

I just got approved for rent assistance. So I think this is gonna help me to save.

The reason she'll be able to save is because she's getting rent assistance.

fishslap yourself.
