Chappelle is basically Eddie light. Every black comic since Eddie debuted on SNL wants to be Eddie Murphy. PRINCE: Always and Forever

Eddie didn't have to do stand up soon into his career because he was one of the biggest actors of the time. Rock can't touch him. Plus it is well documented Rock copied Eddie and Pryor and all the greats, he studied the work constantly. Also let's not forget Bill Cosby, he got into trouble yes but he was a power house comedian in his day. What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

Getting back to the original post, is it fair to have someone with a 20 minute spot and 2 sets from Def Comedy Jam over guys a Damon Wayans or Eddie Griffin who blow Mac's output out of the water? My whole point of this thread was saying Bernie doesn't have the naterial these other guys have. His peers destroy his output. Between 1992 (Bernie's TV debut-2008 (His untimely death) -zero half hour specaisl, zero hour specials, one group special Other guys work between 92-08 from HBO, Showtime, Comedy Central, BET, Theater, Straight to Video/DVD, Comedy Albums, ect. Damon Wayans - 2 one hour specials (2 earlier specials in 89 and 91) Eddie Griffin - 2 half hour specials, 3 one hour specials (one was 90 minutes), 1 group special, 1 comedy album (2 post 2008) Chris Rock - 1 half hour special, 4 one hour specials (one was 90 minutes), 1 comedy album Martin Lawrence - 1 half hour special, 2 one hour specials (both over 90 minutes) Sinbad - 5 one hour specials Dave Chappelle - 1 half hour special, 2 one hour specials (3 post 2008) D.L. I firmly believe in quality over quantity and as far as I'm concerned, Bernie Mac had far more quality material than the majority of his peers. Of course, quality is not something that can be accurately measured. Everyone will have their own opinions on who is "the best". So when I say that I believe Bernie Mac is NOT overrated, I'm saying that because I believe he is funnier than most other comedians and therefore deserves his reputation as one of the greats.

Wouldn't you say it's easier to have a good 20 minutes of material than it is to make multiple hour long sets? Like an athlete having a great 2 year stretch over someone who's had a constant 10 year peak. I've never said Bernie wasn't funny he just left a lot to be desired. Do I think all of those comics I listed are better than Mac, hell nah. But I'd take about 10 of them over him. PRINCE: Always and Forever

I'd much rather watch a great comedian for 20 minutes than a decent one for an hour. Like I said, quality over quantity. Fawlty Towers only ran for 12 episodes or something but its still much MUCH better than Friends, which ran for 10 years.

Graycap23 said: Comedy is a "funny" thing (pardon the pun) Murphy is considered one of the greats but his material doesn't stand up over time. Listen to Eddie's work today, very dated and quite corney even though it was great at the time it was done. How do u guys see his work?
Certian guys stand up over time much better. Chappell, Rock, Pryor, Mac.....and great over time. [Edited 7/13/18 10:51am] [Edited 7/13/18 11:52am] I agree about the outdated factor. Granted, I could definitely still see the humor, but with certain stuff (namely the gay jokes) it got tired. I’ll still love to see him come back and do a stand up special & this time probably put sincerity & thought into his material, seeing that he matured since then.

I don't agree with the notion that a joke can ever be outdated. If it was funny then, it's funny now. Eddie Murphy's bit about having a nightmare where he goes to Hollywood and finds out Mr. T is gay is hilarious.

Eddie Murphy's bit about having a nightmare where he goes to Hollywood and finds out Mr. T is gay is hilarious. Respectfully agree to disagree then. There were many comics back in the day who used Asian men & culture as a punch line (among other racial groups) yeah the audience laughed then. If they performed the same jokes now would they generate the same reaction? Can Eddie Murphy get away with his same gay jokes in 2018 especially his history post-Raw? That’s what I meant by outdated.
