First fiction I've had the time to read for a while.

Very good indeed. Very weird, funny, and disturbing. Both this and the film adaptation are superb, despite not being very like each other.

re-reading in preparation for a complete re-read of 'league of extraordinary gentlemen' (volume 3 of which is set in a fictional, post-big brother london). it's kind of really gross how pertinent this novel is to today's political climate...

got this locked and loaded after reading a couple of reviews...semi-autobiographical narrative of iraq war veteran turned junkie bank-robber; written from his prison cell.

my summer reading is more or less going along as planned. i'm about 2/3s of the way through michael pollan's 'how to change your mind,' about the use of psychedelics in treatment of addiction, depression, & his own personal dives into the deep end, and i am enjoying it quite a bit. it's a very breezy book, light & conversational, but also filled with interesting history & ideas.

but one book i read this month that i absolutely didn't plan to is aleksandr solzhenitsyn's in the first circle. i did not have a 700+ page russian novel about gulags on my list of light summer reading, but the great podcast 'econtalk' is holding a book-club style series of shows based on it, so i decided to give it a try. while it is definitely very much a russian novel - ie long, with some occasionally winding, introspective passages where people discuss the futility of life - it is mostly a very approachable book, practically a page-turner at times, occasionally verging on reading like a spy-thriller, & darkly funny in spots, in the way people can find humor in the bleakest situations imaginable. highly recommended.

No it just a supply and demand issue. Tons of very intelligent well read people listen to audiobooks. Tons. We no longer live in little house on the prairie days where there are fewer resources demanding our attention . It's the reality of this world. Seems silly to neglect the joy of a book because you don't have the time to sit down and physically read it and other people's rudeness . I've heard the same attitude about people who read comic books all my life. Doesn't make it a true statement. That's just something said based on personal ignorance, or self importance. I'm better than you because I do it this way. I'm bored with those type of fake attitudes. Life's too freaking short. If someone wants to stick up their nose over silly stuff knock yourself out. I'm getting a ton of informational input and joy in my life so I don't need to justify myself to anyone. Too many important things in this world to fret about.

Oh, is that your issue? Semantics? I guess that different if you want to be literal about it. I could post articles then in that case.

You've got some ego, lol. Not everything is about YOU. You're free to listen to anything you choose. My point was that, IN GENERAL, I don't see the appeal of audio books.

Besides, I don't make "backhanded coments". If I wanted to say something, I'd say it directly.

I'm not sure. It depends on what you think of Princess of Mars. If you like it, as you should, then you might pass for human. If not, well don't worry, I'm sure you'll be OK until someone adopts you from the pound. smile

But seriously though, Princess of Mars is a good choice. If you like that then I'd really recommend the whole Barsoom series. Don't let the John Carter movie put you off.

Yes, I do have an ego, does that surprise you in some way? Is having an ego some monstrous thing? You responded to me I responded to you, and you keep responding and I keep responding to you. It's called communication, I thought. I'm more than aware I'm free to listen, I said they are on YouTube, everybody is free to listen. You don't see the appeal of audiobooks and I get that, I didn't used to either, but you are the one who had the add the underhanded snide remark. I haven't insulted your intelligence once.

Backhanded doesn't mean you held back in what you said it's about how you said it.

"We were disappointed by his backhanded apology. “You throw okay, for a girl” is a bit of a backhanded compliment"

indeed. i would extend an even hardier recommendation to burroughs' 'tarzan' novels.

i usually reserve my endorsement for achieving humanity based on whether or not certain episodes of 'm*a*s*h' make you cry.
