Three, to my knowledge. Janet Gaynor and Frederic March, Judy Garland and James Mason, and Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson.

The Judy version is a classic.

Sean Penn was raving about Cooper as a director and the film in general. I've heard a lot of people say he and Stephanie had great chemistry. So, we'll see.

I actually prefer the Janet Gaynor/Frederic March - mainly because I don't really care for James Mason.

Streisand tried to get Elvis for her version of the movie...

I can't imagine it was a very serious effort. Elvis was on tour for all of 1975/76 (A Star Is Born was released on December 18, 1976). There's no way he could have done a film.

I would not turn down watching that one either. It's sort like the two Mame's (which I'm surprised they haven't remade with Meryl Streep or Jane Fonda). The Lucille musical version is fun and lovely, and Bea Arthur is a perfect counterpart (much like Shirley Maclaine was to Olympia Dukakis in Steel Magnolias). But the non-musical straight-ahead Rosalind Russell's Auntie Mame has a sass all its own, too.

There was a rumor (a few years ago) that the remake was going to have Beyonce in it..Glad that didn't happen. Bradley looks like he's really trying to channel 1970's Kristofferson in this one...It looks like a good remake, but I'll wait 'til it hits cable next year.

I disagree. Elvis as he was in 1975/6 did not have the sex appeal to pull off that part. (He was extremely overweight, for one thing.) And I doubt he would have been okay with playing a washed-up performer who ends up committing suicide.

And can you imagine this movie coming out with Elvis in it - and then he dies eight months later? I'm guessing Barbra Streisand thanked her lucky stars he said "no."

Yeah, the Colonel killed off his acting career years before that. He wanted to do real movies and could have. Would have loved to see him in a real role. As a fantasy cast was more my thought. Elvis was prettier than Babs too, maybe not as good a "couple".

This one, "Little Women" and "Romeo and Juliet" get constsantly remade. It's like every generation NEEDS their version of these movies.

Movies I'm surprised haven't been generationally remade?

He was in good shape in 75. He started gaining weight at the end of 76. He could have gotten in shape. He lost weight for the 73 Aloha special.

Elvis state, he made a big mistake in saying no to Ms. Streisand.... "A Star is Born".

I like like the both the 1937 (Fredric March / Janete Gaynor) & 1954 uncut version (Judy Garland / James Mason) of," A Star Is Born".

I didn't like Streisand version. This generation of producer, directors, writers... all they do is fuck-up remakes.

Yuuup it would have been a great opportunity......but "Colonel" Tom Parker put a stop to it.

I'm open to the possibility that this could be an enjoyable film though I doubt it will be particularly artistic given the material. Bradley Cooper is not a bad actor IMO, so I think the wild card here will be whether Lady Gaga can sell it or will she be too self-conscious!

I was not a fan of the Barbara/Kris version, even though I was never a Barbara hater like so may people. It just seemed flat and contrived.
